What is Civil Engineering?

• Civil engineers design, build, and maintain the foundation for our modern society – our roads and bridges, drinking water and energy systems, sea ports and airports, and the infrastructure for a cleaner environment. – ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers)

CE 270 (Engineering Mechanics: Statics) CE 270 Course Competencies ASNS Program SLOs Solve problems to demonstrate an understanding of forces, resultants, equilibrium, trusses, frames, machines, centroids, moments of inertia, friction, and internal forces/moments.

Apply scientific knowledge, skills, and methods to problem solving, with a special emphasis on Hawai'i, where appropriate.

Utilize analytical reasoning to analyze engineering structures subjected to concentrated loads, distributed loads, and frictional forces.

Utilize analytical reasoning or mathematical techniques to describe physical or biological phenomena.

Utilize numerical techniques to investigate the design of engineering structures.

Conduct inquiry-based investigations using computer algorithms, engineering design reviews, and/or the scientific process.

Conduct background research into the design of an engineering structure, and communicate results via a written report.

Critically review discipline-specific literature and effectively communicate unbiased research orally and in writing.

Why ‘ĈŝŶĂ-based?

What does ‘ĈŝŶĂ have anything to do with trusses, frames, machines, or centroids? “He a‘o ka honua a me ŶĈ mea ŬƻůŽŚĞůŽŚĞ.” “The natural environment is our classroom.” Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better. - Albert Einstein

The Individual Assignment • Define the moku and ahupua‘a where you live, and find

a story, song, or proverb of this place • Find the area centroid and center of mass of your

ahupua‘a via GPS coordinates (Monte Carlo method)

ҧݔ = ඵܣ݀ ݔܣ݀ തݕ = ඵܣ݀ ݕ

ܣ݀

• Describe a significant ancient site nearest to either centroid, plus another significant ancient site anywhere within your ahupua‘a

• Describe a significant modern structure nearest to either centroid, plus another significant modern structure anywhere within your ahupua‘a

The Group Assignment • Form groups of 3-4 by common moku • Pick one ancient site within your group’s moku – Describe its history and cultural significance – Use KCC library resources (class time for research day)

• Pick one modern structure in your group’s moku – Gather data via measurements and pictures – Analyze axial forces, shear, bending moment,

support reactions, loading curves • Communicate results via poster

presentation – Student Undergraduate Research

Fair or similar event

Again, why ‘ĈŝŶĂ-based? Why should we study or care about ancient sites? “I ka ǁĈ ma mua, ka ǁĈ ma hope.” “The future is in the past.” - ŵŽ॒ŽůĞůŽ, ॒ŝŬĞ, bridging past to present (Aunty Keolani’s MOU) If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants. - Sir Isaac Newton (1676)

High-Impact Educational Practices

• Collaborative assignment • Undergraduate research • Capstone project

• RI-designation (next Spring) • S-designation (next Spring)

Research-Intensive Designation Hallmarks and rubric for the RI designation 1. Active hands-on research by students, under supervision of, and collaboration

with faculty 2. Application of scientific method

1. Literature research on specific topics and methods employed 2. Formulate a hypothesis 3. Design methods to test the hypothesis 4. Collect and analyze data as appropriate 5. Document and formally present the results of hypothesis testing to an

audience 3. Accepted media for the final presentation include: research paper, poster,

video, PowerPoint, or other observable methods

Scientific Method Engineering Design Process

1. Literature research on specific topics and methods employed

1. Define the problem, and conduct literature research on specific topics and methods employed

2. Formulate a hypothesis 2. Brainstorm ideas and select a solution to the problem

3. Design methods to test the hypothesis 3. Design a prototype to test the solution

4. Collect and analyze data as appropriate 4. Collect and analyze data as appropriate

5. Document and formally present the results of hypothesis testing to an audience

5. Document and formally present the results of prototype testing to an audience

Sustainability Designation • ^ƵƐƚĂŝŶĂďŝůŝƚLJ>ĞĂƌŶŝŶŐKƵƚĐŽŵĞƐ͗

– Define sustainability on local, national, and international levels. – Identify the personal values and attitudes that can facilitate sustainable living. – Describe how the individual relates to the wider issues of sustainability – Measure one’s impact on the triple bottom line: People, Planet, Profit. – /ĚĞŶƚŝĨLJƚŚĞƐŽĐŝŽ-ĐƵůƚƵƌĂůǀĂůƵĞƐĂŶĚĂƚƚŝƚƵĚĞƐƚŚĂƚĨĂĐŝůŝƚĂƚĞƐƵƐƚĂŝŶĂďůĞůŝǀŝŶŐĂƚƚŚĞůŽĐĂů͕

ƌĞŐŝŽŶĂůĂŶĚŐůŽďĂůůĞǀĞůƐ͘ – Apply concepts of sustainability to local, regional and/or global challenges. – Demonstrate how concepts of sustainability are connected to local, regional and global issues. – Describe how traditional and indigenous perspectives inform practices of sustainability

• ^ƵƐƚĂŝŶĂďŝůŝƚLJŽƌĞŽŶĐĞƉƚƐ͗ – Sustainable Economics (quadruple bottom line, gross national happiness) – Ecosystem Services – ĐŽůŽŐŝĐĂů&ŽŽƚƉƌŝŶƚƐͬĂƌďŽŶ&ŽŽƚƉƌŝŶƚƐ – Waste Reduction: Cradle to Cradle – Carbon Neutrality – Local First/ Food Sovereignty / Food Miles – Adaptive Resilience

Do I really need to study history and culture through the ‘ĈŝŶĂ, instead of just structures?

He ůĂǁĂŝ͚Ă no ke kai ƉĈƉĂ͚Ƶ, he ƉƃŬŽůĞ ke aho; he ůĂǁĂŝ͚Ă no ke kai hohonu, he ůŽĂ ke aho. “A fisherman of the shallow sea uses a short line; a fisherman of the deep sea uses a long line.”

Why ‘ĈŝŶĂ-based for CE270?
