Zespół Szkół Ponadgimnazjalnych in Somonino im. Józefa Wybickiego is a community school, located in a charming village of Kashubia. In the Technical school we provide learning opportunities and skills in the field of hospitality and catering. In the basic vocational school - learning opportunities in many professions. We conduct not only the educational process, but also organize numerous courses , activities and above all ensure participation in projects.

The priority of the last 10 years is the implementation of EU projects, especially Socrates Comenius, Comenius, Leonardo da Vinci, Erasmus+ with the participation of partner schools from Greece, Germany, Italy, Spain, Romania, Malta, Belgium, Netherlands, Slovakia, Turkey,

Hungary, Lithuania, Sweden, Italy, among others.

The project design works involved more than 500 people making the school a leader within the local community in obtaining funds from the European Union.

Our experiences

Our work and extensive international contacts have allowed teachers, students and employees for personal development that we could only dream of without EU projects.

Practical vocational training includes a close correlation between the learning outcomes in the context of foreign apprenticeships and national practices, so that students may both gain new knowledge and improve already existing skills, according to individual characteristics and interests, and in the future to meet the expectations and demands of the labor market.

Since 2006 our students have been improving their professional skills in many European countries: in Belgium, Turkey, Spain, France, Great Britain, Italy and Malta, among others.

This year students, together with their teachers, took part in international apprenticeships in the project „Foreign practices the added value in

vocational training”.

Apprenticeships were held in hotels and restaurants in Belgium, Spain, Turkey and Malta.

The evaluation results show what are the effects of international apprenticeships within the EU projects

• Students increase their professional and language skills, as well as have the opportunity to acquire and develop personal and social competencies

• The students shape their attitudes regarding tolerance and understanding of cultural and linguistic diversity in Europe and other regions of the world,

• Students and teachers have increased knowledge and skills in the organization of work in the partner countries,

• Teachers-caretakers increase their language skills.

• Participants of apprenticeships receive certificates and Europass Mobility.

• Students and teachers prepare presentations, the menu, a catalog of personal and professional competence, as well as work on a guide for mobility in a European and regional labor market.

• Implementation of projects increase interest in our school among junior high school students.

• School exchanges experience on staff training and labor market needs, as well as adjusts teaching plans and teaching methods to enable the training of personnel for the European labor market.

We are confident that next year

apprenticeships will be equally fruitful.

Currently we also carry out two projects in the context of a strategic partnership.

The first project is related to the topic of construction and architecture

The second involves the subjects of mathematics and nature.

We were also a partner in many projects concerned with exchanging experience of VETPRO teachers and Leonardo da Vinci aimed at both the personal professional development of participants and improving systems of education and training through the introduction of new solutions in the sending institution

With partners from Italy and Greece we have learned the traditions and

culture in Europe

We have expanded knowledge in a biological-ecological field

We have proved that science and art are the best ambassadors of national values in Europe. We have promoted cultural diversity, national and European values.

We played architects, creating energy-efficient home design to show the need to reduce CO emissions.

Cooperation of schools in these projects has led to the manufacture of specific products

• A guide of standard catering and restaurant;

• A website (http://fb4you.pl/) has been created, containing course materials;

• An Intraschool System of Vocational Guidance has been established;

• A linguistic and cultural guide has been prepaired for students pursuing international training in partner countries;

• A book has been written to promote traditions, culture and gastronomy of Greece, Italy and Poland;

• Numerous presentations have been created on the topic of environmental protection, renewable energy sources, new technologies in construction, as well as scientific and artistic achievements of European countries.

Interweaving daily school duties with the implementation of projects refreshes and enriches school life. We have huge opportunities, supported by various tools, which have open access thanks to the ubiquitous Internet.

Today we would like to present a tool with which we encountered during the implementation of the project "Plus-Energy-House".

Our adventure with eTwinning

In 2011, as one of the 7 partners, we started Multilateral Comenius project entitled "Plus-Energy-House".

The coordinator of this project had extensive projects' experience and was not alien to various cutting edge technologies and tools facilitating the work.

It was the main coordinator who encouraged us to use the eTwinning platform as a tool to support the implementation of our project.

In implementing this project, we wanted to make as many people as

possible aware that changes in energy consumption in homes are

necessary and possible.

In order to achieve this, we wanted to use a free program Sketchup to

design a small Plus-Energy House, which can be implemented in practice.

Participants conducting next stages of the project had to deal with

construction, insulation of houses and new technologies in construction

industry.

Designing a Plus-Energy House was ambitious and required collecting vast amounts of information and exchanging this information between partners.

To facilitate this proces the coordinator suggested the usage of the eTwinning platform.

Students and teachers can use the portal to work without any hindrance, because the platform is completely free and the only thing you need is a computer with internet access.

eTwinning Platform in practice

Cooperation and exchange of information and materials between students and teachers has never been so easy.

eTwinning expands the range of possibilities, motivates to studying and opening up to Europe and, when used in the projects' implementation, allows for faster and more efficient development of products and the sharing of experiences and ideas between partners.

During the "Plus-Energy-House" project we used the portal particularly in order to communicate and exchange information and materials required to develop the final product, that is the design of an energy-efficient home.

In order to achieve this, we used TwinSpace tool.

We have established activities within the project, which derived from the planned schedule, and added the necessary tools: a file archive, photo galleries

and a blog, among others.

The first document, which was uploaded

to the TwinSpace, was the outline of the project so that each partner could check out the next steps,

tasks and visits schedule after

logging on eTwinning, anywhere

they were.

Photos from subsequent meetings in

partner countries were also uploaded

to the portal so that our

partners could use them to

promote project's activities.

The blog was also a useful tool, used for communication. All essential information

appeared in this section on regular basis. Thanks to that, no important information regarding

the project's implementation escaped our partners.

As a result, we were able to work remotely on the logo of the

project and make a joint decision on its final form.

But the most important documents, which we shared,

were the ones required to develop the final product.

Thus, there were materials on

renewable energy sources, design of windows, installation

of central heating, water, gas etc., construction materials for

walls, roof and floor.

By using the platform, each partner received the necessary materials on regular basis and was able to communicate and ask questions or ask for help with carrying out tasks.

eTwinning helped us to achieve the final result, which is the design of energy-efficient home. Its full documentation, prepaired in SketchUp,

can also be found at TwinSpace.

Following the evaluation of the project, we defined the benefits of the usage of the eTwinning platform

• unlimited and fast access to the knowledge base related to the project,

• information exchange between partners and joint work on the same issue,

• publication of materials from tasks performed by individual partner countries and unlimited access to them,

• partner countries (TwinSpace Staff room) and unlimited access to them,

• publication of results of the project,

• submitting and sharing, along with promoting the finished product on-line for all partners (without having to meet again),

• sending and receiving training materials, eg. to work in the Sketchup program,

• the ability to copy and use materials on the eTwinning platform for all schools to be employed for other activities,

• safe and free networking, sharing different ideas with project partners,

• stimulated pupils' curiosity and desire to demonstrate their knowledge and skills,

• influenced the development of computer and language competences, as well as responsibility and team working skills,

• eTwinning has broadened the horizons of the students. It also shows what is tolerance, diversity and learning by doing,

• teachers were enabled to exchange experiences and cooperate while performing various design tasks,

• skills and experience gained through eTwinning can also be useful to participants outside of school by giving them more confidence, mutual respect for diversity and shared responsibility for carrying out tasks

• the use of modern technology allowed for creative work, presenting own ideas and development of students' talents.

Ideas for further usage of eTwinning

Due to the diversity of projects we implement, there are new ideas for using eTwinning in our work.

One of the biggest advantages of our school are the annual apprenticeships for Technical Highschool students in the profession of hospitality technician along with nutrition and food services technician, as well as for Vocational School students in the chefs' profession.

Starting this year, we want to combine the opportunities provided by the eTwinning platform with the implementation of mobility projects and the vocational education classes.

1. The use of the eTwinning platform to improve the skills of teachers of vocational subjects through cooperation with other teachers in order to develop common didactic materials for teaching vocational subjects and tools for monitoring apprenticeships, for example guides for graduates entering the European labor market.

2. Establishing contacts with the hospitality and cookery schools from other countries in order to create a joint eTwinning project, which's aim will be the development of materials for teaching vocational English language, which will help students to prepare for international apprenticeship.

3. The creation of a professional project for chefs, in which students from different countries can exchange recipes for various dishes, create new, common rules and improve their professional skills.

Projects funded by the European Union help to improve the quality of school work, adapt curricula to changing labor market, train teachers, integrate the school with the local environment and improve the competences of future graduates.

The constant progress of civilization forces societies to become innovative. Therefore, we should engage in continuous, lifelong development, and so investments in the education system are particularly important.

EU funds give us the opportunity to develop – let's take advantage of this opportunity!

Let us use all available tools to enhance the attractiveness of our activities and support them.
