What it is...

• Imperialism- The creation of an unequal economic, cultural, and territorial relationship based on mainly domination.

• Colonialism- The exploitation and/or expansion of colonies in one territory by people from another territory.

• Annexation- To take territory from another place/region and add it to your own; expanding you territory.

Social Darwinism

• Social Darwinism- To take the beliefs and concepts of Darwinism/evolutionary theory and build it into sociology and politics.

• In Darwinism, one of the key points I learned is that a species will try to dominate another to take over power or for gain. So with that said, Social Darwinism is the idea, based off of Darwin’s, that we people, will try as politics or just as a society, to dominate over each other...for such things as power/personal gain. This also related to imperialism in the way that they, “imperials” , will also try to dominate over another.

“White Man’s Burden”

• This poem by Rudyard Kipling characterized imperialism as a justification of the policy as a noble enterprise. It reflected the subject of American colonization of the Philippines, won in the Spanish-American War. It basically said, to white men...probably the white rich men, to colonize and rule other nations for the benefit of those people. To take this as a duty and burden to put their “beliefs” in front of the people and rule for the nation. It pretty much put them in charge, making their “people” to do the hard work while they get rich and profit off of it, complaining that it isn’t enough.

Racism & Missionary Impulse

• Hatred or intolerance of another race or other races, usually from different believes.

• Paternalism is behavior, by a person or group of people, which limits people based off of their ethnicity. For example, they may limit the amount of things you can do if you are a ethnicity “they” don’t like. So in fact this is racism because it is judging people off of the ethnicity and beliefs.

The Scramble for Africa

• Took place between 1881 and 1914.

• It was a process of invasion, occupation, colonization and annexation of African territory by European powers.

• The Berlin Conference was something which regulated colonization and trade in Africa during the New Imperialism period, and also brought the time of Germany’s sudden imperial power control.

• Liberia and Ethiopia were the only two countries in Africa not colonized.

Nationalism

• Nationalism is a very close form of patriotism, basing it’s ideas upon the identification of a group of individuals or people within a nation.

• Two main perspectives:

• Primordialist- describes nationalism as a reflection the human trend to organize into a distinct groups based on affinity of birth.

• Modernist- describes nationalism as a recent phenomenon that requires the structure and conditions of modern life.

Colonized vs. the Colonizers

• To expand building lands, get new workers, produce more profits, industrialize the new area, bring new ideas into the society, etc.

• I would guess that some not all would be fine with it, and others would feel like businesses were running them and wouldn’t like it at all. There may be more rebellions against it then for it depending on the type of society.
