AIRBORNE RADIOMETRIC SURVEY

TOWNSHIPS 161. 167 AND 168

SAULT STE. MARIE MINING DISTRICT

ONTARIO

INTRODUCTION:

During the period of August 31 and September 2, 1977, an air

borne radiometric survey consisting of 70.27 line miles was completed *

by Imperial Oil Limited over a 65 clair. group situated in Townships 161,

167 and 168 in the Sault Ste. Marie Mining District of Ontario.

The 65 claims, which are held jointly by Imperial Oil Limited

and Consolidated Morrison Limited were flown in two directions 'i.e.North-

South and East-West) at a flight line interval of 1/8 mile.

The radiometric survey measured uranium, thorium and potassium

radiation separately. This report describes the results of the

uranium and thorium surveys.

CLAIMS: (Figure No. 1)

The 65 claims surveyed are located in one group straddling

Townships 161, 167 and 168. All the claims situated in Township 168 are

under extension until September 30, 1977. All other claims have been

recently staked in July 1977. A list of the 65 claims forms Appendix "A"

to this report.

GENERAL GEOLOGY:

The northern half of the claim group (Township 168) is

underlain by flat-lying Gowganda Formation which consists essentially

of conglomerate, quartzite and arkose. The rocks underlying the

southern half of the claim group consist of shallow dipping Bruce

conglomerates and Mississagi quartzites.

SURVEY PROCEDURE:

The airborne radiometric survey was carried out by Imperial

Oil Limited using a geophysically equipped 206-B helicopter (registration

C-GOQA) on contract from Dominion Pegasus Helicopters Limited based out

of the Sudbury airport in Sudbury, Ontario.

Due to the flat-lying nature of the rock formations described

above, flight lines were orientated both North-South and East-West

directions at a nominal interval of 1/8 mile. On the average, the survey

was flown at an airspeed of 70 m.p.h. with a mean terrain clearance of

about 100 feet.

Both pilot and operator-navigator were provided with un

controlled photo lay-down mosaics at a scale of AOO feet to one inch,

with the intended flight lines drawn in and numbered. Navigation was

accomplished by visual means based on the topographic detail observed.

The operator-navigator marked fiducial numbers at identifiable points

on the mosaic, and the flight lines were recovered at the field office. '*

A total of 70.27 line miles of survey were completed over

the 65 claim group.

INSTRUMENTATION:

The helicopter carried the following equipment to coAplete

the radiometric surveys-

1. McPhar - Model 3001 - four differential spectrometer.

2. An Airecord VI - six channel analog recorder.

3. Crystal 954-1 detector (256 cu. in.).

4. Bonzar Mark 10 Altimeter.

The McPhar Spectra A4D Spectrometer System consists of a

256 cu. in. sodium iodide crystal, in optically coupled photomulti-

plior tube, and a gamma ray spectrometer with both built-in analog

recorder and magnetic tape cassette recorder.

Gamma rays are detected by the sodium iodide crystal and

converted to electrical energy in the photomultiplier tube. The

electrical impulses are then sorted into four energy levels (K, Th,

U, Total Radiation) by the gamma ray spectrometer of.d recorded in

the analog mode and/or on magnetic tape.

The magnetic tape cassette recorder stores information

from all four energy levels simultaneously, and in the Meroodyne

decorder a print-out of four-channel analog data can be retrieved.

Any of the four channels can be selected for display and

recording on the built-in analog recorder, but only one channel at a

giv^n time.

Calibration consists of applying a calibrating source to the

crystal and rotating the "calibrate" control for a peak reaJing on a

separate channel provided for this purpose.

INTERPRETATION OF A RADIOMETRIC SURVEY:

Gamma radiation emanates from radioactive sources and can

be detected by vising a sodium iodide crystal. Assuming equilibrium

within radioactive series, the amplitude of radioactivity in each of

the U, Th, and K channels is proportionate to the concentrations of

these elements in the radioactive source. Other factors that influence

the radioactivity amplitude are the surface area of exposure to the

airborne detector system, the elevation of the aircraft and its airspeed,

Examination of the ratios of uranium to thorium response is ah

excellent indicator of relative increase or decrease of the concen

tration of one of these elements. Examination of amplitude alone may be

misleading for the above reasons.

DISCUSSION OF RESULTS: (Drawings #100l, 1002, 1003, 1004)

No real significant airborne radiometric response was detected

within the survey area. Several narrow weak responses were recorded

alonp, several flight lines, but no pattern can be discerned when values

are plotted.

1) URANIUM: (Drawings i?l001 and 1002)

On L17N, anomaly A proved to be the strongest uranium

response of the entire survey. Slightly above background

readings were recorded with a U/Th ratio of 2 to 1. This

anomaly, on reviewing the tapes, appears to be narrow and

weak.

SSM-1961

Page 7: IMPERIAL OIL LIMITED · 41j87nwm28 mma1 juillette 010 airborne radiometric survey townships 161, 167 and 168 sault ste. marie mining district of ontario oct 11 im resident geologist

- 5 -

A second response, anomaly C on L105E, is also a weak anomaly

but appears to have a little more width than the above

anomaly.

2) THORIUM; (Drawings ?1003 and 1004)

The thorium anomalies, like the above, are all weak and

narrow responses. The only anomaly worth noting is

situated on L1SN and has been designated anomaly A.

Although the values are low, the Th/U ratio for this

anomaly is 16/1. *

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS:

The results of an airborne radiometric survey did not indicate

the presence of significant uranium and/or thorium anomalies. All of the

anomalies plotted are considered very weak when compared to test flights

flown over known deposits (Agnew Lake area) or showings.

It is thoup^*- that weak anomalies may be attributed to the

following causes:

1) Groundwater deposition of radioactive minerals in fractures

or in narrow faults occurring near an elevated source rock.

2) Narrow, weak concentrations of radioactive minerals in the

form of veinlets o t pyrite associated with the Mississagi

quartzites.

It is recommended that a field check

be made prior to the freeze-up period.
