2017 ANNUAL REPORT | 12017IMPACT

Dear Friends,

The numbers for 2017 tell a remarkable story. This was a year of considerable growth for The Cape Cod Foundation.

Thanks to you.

• We distributed $3.4 million in grants and scholarships, an increase of $500,000 over 2016

• We added 19 new funds to our portfolio, a 30% increase from 2016

• We received 1,000 more individual gifts this year than last

• We realized a $2.4 million increase in new gifts to funds from 2016

• Our net assets grew $9.3 million, bringing total assets to $61.5 million

Naturally, financial growth and stability are critical to our success and sustainability. But, to us, growth is about more than numbers. It’s about creating positive and permanent change in the community. That’s what Community Foundations like us were created to do: build resources and grant opportunities for the betterment of the community. Now and in the future.

However, it’s very difficult to increase impact and outcomes by focusing solely on current needs. The challenges we face are simply too great and too complex for short-term solutions. The Chinese proverb will always hold true: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. We need to be more proactive. We need to view our work through a wider lens with a sharper focus. We need to make a bold and deliberate shift in our overall direction: to strategically and steadily expand the capacity of local nonprofit organizations so that we can develop and implement long-term solutions for our community’s greatest challenges. And we are.

On page 4, you’ll learn more about one of the major new initiatives we initiated in 2017, and we’ll continue to update you on the entire scope of our work along the way. “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step,” the great philosopher Lao Tzu once said. We agree. The road is long; there are no easy, fast fixes. Some days this will be a journey of baby steps. Other days, we’ll be able to make longer strides. No matter what, we’re on the right road. No matter what, we’ll get where we’re going. And, we’ll get there together.

With gratitude,

Henry R. Holden Kristin O’MalleyBoard Chairman President and CEO

you can become involved.

CAPE COD 2020: A NEW VIS ION FOR OUR COMMUNITYIN 2017, The Cape Cod Foundation launched its newest strategic initiative to leverage resources for increased impact: Cape Cod 2020: A New Vision for Our Community. Its goal, like all our initiatives, is simple: to improve the quality of life on Cape Cod.

The conversation about a new vision started five years ago. In 2013, we received a substantial unrestricted endowment gift, and in 2014, we celebrated our 25th anniversary. The significant, but unrelated events, sparked a new exchange about expanding our impact across the region. Over the next three years, we met with community leaders, nonprofit executives, industry experts, and funders to identify areas where the needs are the greatest, but the resources are not as strong as they could be. Or need to be.

In October 2017, we met with several community influencers and asked them to form a LOCAL philanthropic collaborative with us. Their receptivity was only surpassed by their generosity. Each donor committed to invest a minimum of $5,000 of discretionary funds over the next three to five years that we can use to strategically and significantly impact two areas of the Cape community: Youth Development and Organizational Capacity-Building. By the close of 2017, we had raised almost $400,000 in new discretionary funds. Our goal is to reach $1 million in five years.

EARLY SUCCESSORGANIZATIONAL CAPACITY-BUILDING

• STRATEGIC FOCUS GRANTS. We awarded grants totaling $53,950 to five nonprofit organizations to support capacity-building projects: Center for Coastal Studies, Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod, The Family Pantry of Cape Cod, WE CAN, and YMCA Cape Cod.

• NONPROFIT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT. We launched the second year of Tufts University’s Institute for Nonprofit Practice Leadership Development Program with our Cape-based funder’s collaborative. In May of 2018, 16 nonprofit executives graduated from this award-winning class.

• COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP. We continued to lead the Cape and Islands Partnership for Nonprofit Advancement, a 23-member collaborative of funders and program providers, strengthening local educational opportunities for nonprofit professional development.

• CONNECT CAPE COD 2.0. We built an enhanced version of this online community resource, scheduled for release in 2018. It connects nonprofits to information, other organizations, potential partners, consultants, meeting spaces, and other vital resources.

• CAPE HOUSING PARTNERSHIP. We invested $20,000 in this Cape-wide initiative to educate the public about the need for affordable housing.

• NONPROFIT COMPENSATION & BENEFIT REPORT. We supported a New-England-wide study to provide nonprofit leaders with data specific to Cape Cod to help them set competitive compensation levels.

YOUTH DEVELOPMENTSince spear-heading the Cape-wide Youth Action Plan in 2010, we have put Youth Development at the heart of our civic leadership work. In 2017, we focused on identifying successful programs that could be replicated and expanded with additional funding, guidance, and support from the Foundation. Stay tuned for more announcements in this area in 2018!

THE NON-EVENT100% Local. 100% Tax Deductible. 100% Worth It.

Our Annual Non-Event is the best party you’ll never attend. Because everyone is so event-full in the summer, we

host a slightly irreverent, no-attendance required fundraiser so no one needs to go anywhere to support a very worthwhile cause.

Last year, almost 300 people RSVP’d with regrets, but purchased tickets and tables

to support the Foundation’s civic leadership initiatives that power up resources and

opportunities for local nonprofit organizations, the heartbeat of our community. We can’t thank our

guests enough for not coming. Our sponsors also deserve a very special round of applause.

38 | THE CAPE COD FOUNDATION

THE CAPE COD FOUNDATION FUNDSFor 28 years, The Cape Cod Foundation has partnered with generous,

community-minded individuals, families, businesses, and organizations to achieve their charitable goals by establishing named funds. The funds, totaling over 300 at the end of 2017, produce income for grants that are distributed back to the community. The Foundation also manages charitable annuity and trust funds that provide income to the donor and other beneficiaries and support future discretionary or designated programs.

INVESTMENT COMMITTEE CHAIR REPORT

2017 was an extraordinary year for the equity markets. A continuation of relatively low interest rates,

a recovering economy with a return to full employment, and a massive tax cut combined to produce results far in excess of our expectations when the year began. The performance of the Fund exceeded our benchmark, and results compared favorably with similar endowments.

The outlook for the remainder of 2018 is unclear as rising interest rates, higher oil prices, a declining rate of corporate earnings growth, and geopolitical uncertainties are weighed against an economy that continues to recover, with essentially full employment and no obvious signs of overheating or prospective recession.

During the past twelve months, changes to our overall asset allocations have been modest with slight increases to fixed income and private equity and reduction in marketable securities. We continue to augment our ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) commitment and have a significant portion of our equity exposed in low-cost Exchange Traded Funds.

All of this would not be possible without the engaged participation of our seasoned Investment Committee, for which I am most grateful.

We welcome your comments or inquiries at any time.

JACOB F. BROWN, IIChair, Investment Committee
