BUILDING SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS FOR INDIA

Impact Report – FY16

Helping entrepreneurs create a sustainable India

The Genesis The Government of India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy gave IIM Ahmedabad’s Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE) the mandate to develop as a Centre of Excellence in promoting sustainable energy entrepreneurship. MNRE, BP, IFC and Technology Development Board joined in as founding members of the vehicle to implement the mandate – Indian Fund for Sustainable Energy (INFUSE). We were privileged to be launched by the current Hon. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and former Minister of New and Renewable Energy Dr. Farooq Abdullah.

The Fund + Ecosystem Building Approach

We set-up Infuse Ventures as a fund and ecosystem aimed at bridging the key gaps that exist in sustainability-focused entrepreneurship ecosystem. Infuse not only provides equity funding to startups – but also provides mentoring, acceleration guidance, prototyping grants and catalytic debt for rural ESCOs. The Fund + Ecosystem approach helps Infuse build better pipeline and industry connects.

We believe that promoting entrepreneurship in a sun-rise sector like clean-tech requires active market-making efforts to unlock opportunities that can be leveraged by entrepreneurs. We have very actively engaged with the Government and multi-laterals in unlocking new opportunities -

Market Making

Policy Interventions •  CIIE actively engaged with the Ministry of New

and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to become a Program Administrator for off-grid projects of National Solar Mission – facilitating subsidies for small solar entrepreneurs who would otherwise would not qualify for support

•  Infuse engaged with MNRE to enable startups to participate in the NABARD Solar Pumps scheme.

•  Infuse and our portfolio company helped MNRE create a geo-cooling policy; streamlining of permissions required for setting up of geo-cooling projects

Catalytic Facility & Debt Fund •  Debt continues to be the biggest missing link

for solar-based mini-grids focused on rural India. CIIE partnered with Rockefeller Foundation to provide debt to 30+ solar mini-grid projects

•  Infuse has seed-funded cKers – positioned as India’s Energy Development Finance Corporation; aimed at being an NBFC to finance renewables and resource efficiency based projects.

5

We pioneered the concept of accelerator in the sustainability space in India. The accelerators are aimed at identifying idea stage startups in the sector and helping them validate their ideas through active mentoring and networking support.

Ground Breaking

PowerStart & New Mobility Accelerator •  We set-up PowerStart as a unique 3-month

accelerator program to support ideas at an early stage and strengthen the pipeline for investments from Infuse. We have been actively supported by ADB for this.

•  PowerStart supported over 30 fledgling startups through extensive mentoring and networking support – and inputs on business model, market and policies.

•  We have expanded the PowerStart model to the Sustainable Mobility space and running the New Mobility Accelerator with WRI.

Seed Support •  Through support of MNRE and Seed Capital

Assistance Facility of ADB & UNEP, CIIE has supported over a dozen seed-stage ideas with grants – otherwise not available to these startups.

•  Prototype development, pilots, feasibility analysis, customer validation etc are some of the aspects that have been supported through the initiative.

•  15 grants and 10 seed-investments made

Client Footprint

A Hyderabad based manufacturer of high end electronics products wanted to reduce energy costs at their manufacturing facility and make their campus eco-friendly. Fourth Partner installed a grid connected rooftop solar power plant of the size of 252 kWp. It was one of the largest rooftop installations in Hyderabad and was completed in just 2 months. The installation offsets 14000+ Kgs of CO2 every year which is equivalent to planting 600 trees annually. In addition there will be water savings of 24000+ liters on an annual basis.
