1.Abstract
The Ipad a tablet base computer designed by apple.inc, based on the other popular devices by
the USA company Apple, namely the iPod and iPhone and is equally successful as those
products, which has led to many speculation that its success has signaled the end of the
desktop and laptop computers, and the start of the new era of tablet computer dominance, led
by the Ipad and its other tablet counter parts by other companies. The society has broadly
welcomed this new technology of touchscreen. Ipad comes with several application including
Maps, contacts, notes, iBooks, videos, itunes and etc. It makes things easier and has now made
a huge impact in the society.
This article serves to access the impact of the Ipad on the pc industry and society as a whole
and if indeed it poses a threat to the existence of desktop computers and laptops.
Keywords: Tablet, Pc, Apple, Touchscreen
2. PurposeMy aim with this study is to determine why people are drawn to Ipad and to explore the theory
that the Ipad has being used as glorified, yet in most instances, non-violate surveillance tools.
This article contains a brief introduction to my research topic, the research question, the
methodology to be used during my research, the proposed budget and schedule of the research
and conclusion.
3. Introduction
The Ipad, a tablet device, made by and marketed apple inc; based on the their line of I products,
like the IPhone and IPod touch, it has a 9.7-ich LED-backlit widescreen display, 1024 x 768 x
resolution, and runs up to 10 hours of battery, with an access to an app store where users can
then, download applications, like games, utility programs, etc.
It is mainly used for audio-visual media including books, periodicals, movies, music, games, and
web content and it uses a multi-touch display for control.
There are 3 types of ipads, available in the market, and they differentiate from each other, by
their type of storage of internal flash memory, there is a 16, 32, or 64 GB Ipad, there is also an
Ipad2, which also has the 3 different types, differentiated by the type of storage, they some
also come with micro sim card, for internet connectivity, through 3G networks, and also an Wi-
Fi only model.

With this product apple aimed to create a 3rd
category computer device, one that would
compete against the fast selling net book market dominated by and a way be more appealing ,
being that its thinner and less power hungry another aim was to enter the e-reader market
dominated by the Amazon kindle. With this one device, apple aims to enter and conquer many
divisions in the consumer pc market and create a revolution. The Ipad was announced onJanuary 27, 2010 by Steve Jobs at an Apples press conference.
It has led to a tablet race, with many manufactures worldwide, introducing their own tablets
into the industry in order to capitalize on the fast growing market for this particular product
and steal some market share from apple.
4. Background
Introduced to the market in April 2010, and selling 14.8 million in sales worldwide by 2010,
becoming the fastest selling consumer device and being termed as the computer killer, as the
computer industry suffers sales loss, impacted by the Ipad., apple intended to create a
revolution, in the consumer computing market, it is trying to create a new computer category, a
cross between and iPod/ iPhone and a laptop, it is a device capable of doing many of the tasks
performed on a laptop, such as email surfing the web etc. With this device apple, aims to enter
the e-reader market, dominated by the Amazon, kindle. It could be your all in 1 device, capable
of doing many tasks that would traditionally require many other devices, or a larger device,
James Mowery (2010) states that with the Ipad, apple aims to replace laptop computers for in-
home usage, many other people believe are already exploring other usages of this device.
Lance Ulanoff the editor of Mashable states that he didnt like the new ipad third generation
because the new ipad looks like the Ipad 2 because is simply called the ipad and not ipad HD,
IPAD3 or ipad plus some ridiculous suffix. Because Apple s new processor is calledthe A5X
and not the A6
My research will focus on the social relevance of the Ipad, its impact on popular culture, and
the computer industry. What are people using it for and what could the future use of it.
It effect on the whole tablet industry, how it has managed to create a 3rd category of computingproduct and if in the long run, it will indeed replace the traditional laptops, home
entertainment devices and the paper in the newspaper publishing industry, what is its use, how
it will be used, who will use it and why would these people use it.
I want to find out if the Ipad will in the future, will we refer to the Ipad like, the IBM computer,
a product that started a whole new revolution and changed the industry, or just another
product, with a lot of hype, but does not break into the main stream.

5. Literature survey
The purpose of this survey is to give a brief overview of determine, how the Ipad has made in
wards into our homes, since its inception, how it has affected other devices, and industry, thatwhere existent , before it, how it is being regarded as a replacement to those particular device
etc.
The special focus will be on studies conducted, on how it the Ipad, and others devices, have
replaced the pc, and the printing media, where and how it is utilised, and who uses it.
Ipad have released three types of Ipad of to this day. The first generation Ipad 1, Ipad 2 second
generation, Ipad (3rd generation)
The 3rd generation was introduced on 7 March 2012. The ipad has a great memory and many
applications like the ibooks, itunes, video, maps, contacts and many more. It plays a big role in
our society because many people use it for different reasons. The role that the ipad plays in our everyday life
The ipad is portable easy to carry around, you can read a book on ipad, watch short videos and
playing games. Ipad is like holding the web in your hands. Reading and surfing the internet
before going to sleep has become easier for many people. At work ipad can be used for data
entry and managing emails because it has multitasking features, it makes the ipad more
powerful and productive. People use at work, home, on the road, coffee shop. Ipad has taken
over our society.
5.1. Ipad as an all in one home entertainment device
The Ipad allows me to surf the web, check e-mail, watch movies, watch television shows, view
online video, and play games. It provides me with the same experience as my entire home-
entertainment set up. (Don Reisinger, 2010)
In most cases to do all those tasks, several devices are used, but its becoming clear that all my
hopes for an all in one device have finally been realised (Don Reisinger).Reisinger believes, that
the Ipad, will replace all other devices (TV, console, DVD, pc, set top box etc.) that we have at
home, and become the sole, go to entertainment device, he believes, that it would even save
money for people, if they bought an Ipad, instead of all those devices, being that all these tasks
can be done on it.
5.2. Ipad impact on the publishing industry
Andrew also believes that, the Ipad could end up having a great impact on the publishing
industry, maybe in the long run even eliminating the traditional, newspaper, with people opting
to subscribe to a digital version instead of paper and be able to have it delivered to their Ipad

devices, he believes that this would kill the paper business but at the same time, offer
publishers a new way to deliver content and revive the newspaper publishing business.
Ipad 3 confirmed for South Africa, First National Bank confirmed that it will be bringing the new
ipad to South Africa. Apple launched the latest iteration on Wednesday (7 march 2012). Thecompany didnt use the numbering scheme calling it just an ipad.
It will be available in the US and twelve countries 16 march 2012 at the same price of the ipad 2
5.3. The effect of the Ipad on the computer industry
It seems to us that the Ipad effect is part of a large shift in computing from windows based Pcs
to other computing platforms. The computing platform of tomorrow appears to be iOS, Android
and HTML 5. On the hardware front, the industry is moving away from desktops and laptops
towards tablets and pocket computers (smart phones). (Ipad creative).
In an article by Chien, he notes that the Ipad is cutting into the notebook computers market, a
view shared by analyst Maynard Um; he says notebooks appear to be feeling pressure from the
Ipad, Dan Frommer of SplatF points out that the pc market (HP notebook shipments) was
growing 20 % to 40 % every year per quarter and has become flat, This thanks to the growth of
tablet market (jay yarrow 2011).
6. Research question
Has the Ipad signaled the end of the personal computer and the print media and the start of a
new computer category (tablets)?
7. Conclusion
The Ipad is a new product in the market, and with any apple product, it carries a lot of hype,
apple is betting on it to become a success and in the long run, replace many household devices,
turning it to your all in one device capable of doing, almost anything you would wish it to do. It
is too early to say if it will do exactly that.
If you do a lot of work or heavy duty work on your laptop, then you wouldnt trade it with an
Ipad, and some experts, believe it could be more of a companion to laptops rather than a
replacement.
Being that it is a new device, with only two years in the market, it will take time, to see what
could be the future of the Ipad, or the tablet industry, but with the rush in the industry for the
next best tablet and the great adoption, of Ipad by consumers, this predictions, might just be

right and the Ipad or another tablet, may one day, be an household device, the center of your
computing and entertainment needs.
For now, many conflicting views will arise, and people will disagree on what is the real need of
such device, but, as time with time, it will be known.
8. Method, Schedule and budget
8.1. Method
This is where, we discuss the method for doing the research, either, questionnaire, or personal
interviews, with people that are directly affect by the problem in question, and to which I can
then come up with a report and conclusion on my findings.
I will be doing a quantitative research that is utilizing questionnaires, to make my research, to
see how the Independent variable the Ipad, has impacted on the dependent variables, personal
computer and the print media, and peoples lives as a whole.
I will also do research on social networks because that is where I will get an immediate
response of to whether the Ipad have made an impact on our society.
Finally, I will make of a survey to identify the various reasons people make use of the Ipad. The
survey will be conducted amongst those people who respond to the questionnaire positively
(e.g. those who do not make use of the Ipad). In this manner I hope to either prove or disprove
my theory and make recommendation for further work of study.
I will reply allot on articles on the web that have previously discussed about this topic.
The method used here, is a survey research design
8.2. Subject
A survey was conducted by Ad Mob, a Google owned website.
In this survey, the aim was to see what has been the effect, of the Ipad, on the personal
computer market.
It does not really look into Ipad specifically, but focuses on the use of tablets, as a whole and
how people are using them.
It managed to have about 1430 table owners, to participate on the survey, and of those that
participated, 77% admitted to spending less time on their pc after they purchased a tablet, 43
of the participants said, they use their tablets more than their personal computers, and 28 %
said they use their table as their primary computer. Most tablet users, 68 percent, spent at
least one hour each day with it and the activity they conduct on it are primarily games (84 %),
searching for information (78 %) or email (74%).

Another survey conducted by cooper Murphy Webb, which analysis the usage of the Ipad, and
how it has affected print media such as newspapers etc., rounded up 1034 of Ipad owners in
the UK, of those people, 31% prefer to read their news from the Ipad instead of the traditional
newspaper or read magazines, 38% prefer using the device for browsing the net, instead of
their computers, 41 % of the Ipad owners; prefer the Ipad as their choice of media, with printmedia getting 31 %.
A survey that was recently contacted at the UK, in this survey, results were found that the ipad
have changed the way people engage with the everyday life. Over half 51% of ipad owners who
had read magazines prefer it on Apples multimedia device. My point here is that the ipad have
made a huge impact in our lives. This finding suggests that the ipad owners have turned their
backs on the personal computers as ipad have become the new gadget for entertainment and
learning.
The use of desktop computers is down for 35% ipad owners, since ipad have brought their
device as a use of laptop. Down among 39% as Generation I take control of many new
applications created especially for the ipad but 53% of ipad users use it for entertainment since
it brings a lot of new applications like videos, music, YouTube and to serve the internet, go to
social networks. While only 18% want it for more functional purposes.
These are just some of the survey from seven Generation i, conducted by YouGov for their
recognition on the ipad.
The research shows the speed that the ipad has become a mainstream device for media
consumption and 87% using it every day of the week and 26% for every hour per day.
