Anne Swain

PLC- 1st Year

V. Case Study/Story of Change

A telephone ring circulated her life by 180 degrees, Anne

Swain, a student of Pratishthan Learning Center had faced a

lot of challenges in her life. When she was in the UKG class,

her life took a turn as her father, Baikunth Swain passed

away and her family left with unpaid debts. At that time, she

was a student of a convent school and she had all the

facilities in her life. Dresses, toys, family dinners, and

vacations were the way of living for her. Her father, Late

Baikunth Swain was a Contractor and he used to migrate

due to his work. Everything changed when one morning,

Annie’s mother, Malina Swain heard from her brother about

the death of her husband on a phone call.

Due to her father’s death, she and her mother had to shift in

a slum area, her education was stopped and her mother,

Malina Swain started working as a domestic help in her

neighborhood to run the house. Annie joined Lotus Petal

Foundation in 2018. In the beginning, she was a little annoyed

& shy girl and now, she has transformed into a very confident, intelligent and sharp-minded

one. As per her teachers, it was difficult for her to understand the format of writing an answer in

the beginning but now, she has scored full marks in Science and performing brilliantly in other

subjects also.

According to the Counselling Cell, she takes her time for opening up as it took her months to

share her life story with them. She’s a quick learner and she completes her work on time, says

the Counselling Cell. Her teachers believe that she has leadership qualities as once when she

was the class monitor, the way she used to control the class was the same as a teacher does.

She is always eager to learn through understanding the concept thoroughly as once she was

seen solving a mathematics problem on the blackboard at lunch time, claims her teachers. This

meant that when everyone was having lunch, she was more interested in learning.

Annie likes dancing, acting, singing and she is always curious to learn new things. In her spare

time, she learns cooking and tailoring from her mother. She likes watching a serial come on

Startv, Yeh Jaadu Hai Jinn Ka. She aspires to become a Doctor as she believes that there are

a lot of people who do not have the privilege to afford good hospitals and she wants to help

that section of the society by giving them free treatment.

Despite the challenges and hardships of her life, she has never compromised on her studies.

That’s what makes her a studious student!

She can be explained as a “tree with strong roots who stand still when storms arrive”.

Our Programmes

The Foundation’s programmes deliver education for life, skill development to enhance family incomes, and access to organised healthcare with emphasis on less privileged children, youth and women. Its programs are as follows:

1. Vidyananda School Vidyananda in Hindi means “Joy of Education”. It is the primary section of Lotus Petal that runs classes from KG to Grade 7. The class curriculum followed is on the state approved, centralised guidelines prescribed by the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT). Emphasis is given to the overall grooming of the child and several confidence building activities are conducted regularly to ensure that the student is primed for higher education. Medium of education is English and special attention is given to spelling and handwriting skills. Theatre, use of library and performing arts help develop the language and interpersonal skills of a child. Regular parent teacher interaction through Parent Teacher Meetings and counselling helps motivate the parent to keep the child in the education system. We have 374 students enrolled in this program as on March 2020.

2. Pratishthan Learning Centre Pratishthan’ in Hindi means foundation. Pratishthan Learning Centre is the secondary section of Lotus Petal that runs from Grade VI to Grade XII. The medium of education is English and based on the NCERT curriculum. Students complete their high school education and move into professional courses or jobs based on vocational skills. Depending upon their talent and capabilities, each student is counselled to make a relevant career choice.

Many students enrol into Lotus Petal directly into the Pratishthan Program, having completed their elementary education from government/private/NGO run elementary schools. They are often lagging in academic levels by age due to fractured education. At Lotus Petal, they are put on a fast track program to complete their grade 6 to 10 in 3 years, so they can graduate from grade 10 at the appropriate age. Inter school competitions, communication classes, dance, theatre and a fitness program are woven into their schedule for all their confidence and personality building. Post completion of Grade 10, majority of students enrol in skill development programs in government run technical institutes and also complete Sr Secondary thru Lotus Petal. A few students enrol with coaching institutes to prepare for entrance exams for professional higher education and also complete Sr Secondary through Lotus Petal. We have 259 students enrolled in this program as on March 2020.
