imPacT is PTAG’s new spring meeting which will address the impact any new policy and payment changes will have on you as a physical therapist. The new addition of 5x5 Research Panels will also highlight the impact of new research from young professionals and clinical pearls from expert clinicians. The Town Hall Luncheon will offer a time to informally discuss trends and hot topics with the PTAG Board of Directors and fellow physical therapy colleagues. The Oxford Debate is a fun and interactive way of discussing issues with your state delegates before the House of Delegates meeting at APTA’s NEXT Conference. Before the Chapter Business Meeting, we will allow time for special interest groups to network and brainstorm ideas to advance our profession. Throughout the morning session, PTAG will host a Career Fair to encourage interaction between students and young professionals and established clinicians. This will be a great environment for generations of PTs to establish strong working relationships for mentoring and collaboration. We envision this meeting as a great time for intimate discussion of issues and learning as well as a fantastic environment for meeting your fellow colleagues from around the state.

We hope you enjoy the new face of our spring meeting and we look forward to bringing you many new and exciting things for the annual fall meeting as well!

All the Best,

Beth Collier, PT, DPT, OCS Vice President, Physical Therapy Association of Georgia (PTAG)

Treating the Injured Tennis Athlete - A Comprehensive Evidence-Based Approach

8:45 AM - 1:00 PM 0.40 CEUs

Melissa Baudo Marchetti, PT, DPT, SCS, MTC

Tennis is a popular sport with tens of millions of players participating worldwide and over 200 nations having an association with the International Tennis Federation. Atlanta is the #1 city for recreational tennis athletes with over 80,000 members of ALTA (Atlanta Lawn and Tennis Association). This popularity was one factor leading to the reappearance of tennis as a medal sport at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. The volume of play, poor technique, change of surface combined with the current physical demands of the sport can lead to injuries within the musculoskeletal system. Tennis specific injuries can range from acute lower extremity injuries to chronic overuse injuries of the upper extremity. Understanding tennis biomechanics plays a key role in assisting physical therapists and tennis coaches to understand the mechanical characteristics of the tennis strokes and the role they play in injury. As physical therapists, we are responsible for returning these injured athletes back to the court. This 4-hour lecture will introduce attendees to the most current evidence in the treatment and rehabilitation of the injured tennis player including manual therapy, tennis stroke analysis, tennis specific corrective exercises, neuromuscular reeducation, Redcord Suspension Training and the Neurac Method, and player-specific factors, such as musculoskeletal weaknesses in the kinetic chain, volume of play, skill level, racket properties, grip positions, nutrition, and the effect of playing surface on the incidence and prevalence of tennis injuries. Upon completion, participants will be able to: • Understand the fundamentals and biomechanics of tennis • Understand the influence of surface, equipment, grip and training on common tennis injuries • Appropriately evaluate and screen the tennis athlete to identify causes of injury • Identify the kinetic chain and discuss the importance of an efficient kinetic chain in tennis • Identify common causes of tennis specific injuries • Identify the most common tennis related injuries and outline the current evidence-based treatment methods

and rehabilitation interventions including: Manual Therapy, Myofascial Triggerpoint Dry Needling, Stroke Analysis, Tennis-specific Neuromuscular Re-education & Taping, Redcord Suspension Training and the Neurac Method, Corrective Exercises and Strengthening, Therapeutic Modalities, Nutrition and Hydration Education, Stretching (Dynamic vs. Static), Tennis Specific Drills

• Discuss injury prevention strategies for the tennis athlete • Develop a return to tennis program for common tennis injuries and discuss how to get the athlete back on the

court

With the advancements in emergency medical care, patients with Disorders of Consciousness (DOC) are a growing population in neurological rehabilitation. Research demonstrates that these patients have higher rates of emergence from disorders of consciousness and greater functional improvements with structured rehabilitation. Also, structured and functionally based rehabilitation for patients with DOC have resulted in increased return to home and community with greater caregiver education and competence in caring for this unique patient population. This presentation is aimed at educating the clinician on the clinical features and presentation of each state of disordered consciousness including coma, vegetative state, and minimally conscious state and accurate diagnosis of each state. From this understanding, the clinician should then understand the current research behind the medical management and neuropharmacology for patients with disorders of consciousness. Examination of the patient with a disorder of consciousness will be discussed followed by specific treatment options and therapy interventions. Lastly, the concept of family inclusion in therapy interventions, caregiver education and long term care for the patient with disorders of consciousness will be discussed.

Upon completion, participants will be able to: • Understand the neuropathology of brain injury • Describe the differences between disorders of consciousness including coma, vegetative state and the

minimally conscious state • Distinguish the clinical features of each state of consciousness • Recognize pharmacologic interventions for decreased arousal • Describe the physical therapy examination for patients with disorders of consciousness • Determine prognosis and goals based on the examination findings • Create a treatment plan for a client in the minimally conscious state • Select outcome measures that incorporate changes in arousal and cognition • Discuss equipment and discharge considerations

The session will be in a lecture and discussion format. The speaker will provide a summary of a systematic review of literature pertaining to modulation of corticospinal excitability after clinical gait training. The attendees will engage in group discussion about why clinicians should care about the mechanisms and time courses underlying gait retraining interventions in individuals with neurological impairments. We will provide examples of how an in-depth understanding of neuroplasticity mechanisms can aid with the development of improved gait retraining interventions.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

• Summarize the current literature on changes in corticospinal circuitry induced by clinical post-stroke gait retraining

• Elucidate how gait rehabilitation interventions can be modified to maximally harness neuroplasticity • Discuss how a better understanding of neuroplasticity mechanisms can help develop evidence-based gait

training strategies that can improve locomotor function in impairments with neurological impairments • Describe the physical therapy examination for patients with disorders of consciousness • Determine prognosis and goals based on the examination findings

An Oxford debate is a formal, interactive debate in which audience participation is a key feature of the occasion, providing a fun opportunity for the public to voice their opinions. The debate focuses on a resolution relevant to physical therapist practice in Georgia, over which the two debate teams, both pro and con, dramatically address the motion in a systematic process of supporting and rebutting arguments. Audience participation is an important component of the Oxford debate. The audience is expected to participate by bringing points from the floor, for or against the resolution. The audience has been known to show their appreciation or displeasure via rousing applause, using the ever-present clickers and by moving between the pro and con sides of the auditorium to show support. The audience has a significant role in “influencing” the final decision of the moderator who will determine which team has made the most persuasive argument.

Prior topics at APTA national meetings include: 2014: Resolved:  That evidence-driven manual therapy does not necessarily improve patient outcomes. http://www.apta.org/NEXT/News/2014/6/13/Oxford/ 2013: Resolved: That wellness and prevention are an integral part of physical therapist practice. 2012: Resolved: That graduation from an accredited entry-level doctor of physical therapy degree program and the subsequent completion of an approved residency program should be required for licensure as a physical therapist in the United States or its territories. 2011: Resolved: That the integration of clinical practice rules (CPR) into physical therapy practice represents the next logical step in the evolution and growth of the profession
