Coming Attractions

How can you use iMovie Trailer

to showcase what you know about

ANYTHING?

Overview

Students use Apple’s iMovie Trailer to demonstrate a

deep knowledge of their content by creating a short trailer

similar to coming attractions.

Preview Students watch a trailer for a movie and pick

adjectives that describe their feelings it.

Activity In a Problem-Solving Groupwork activity,

students pretend to be working for a movie production

company about to release a trailer that will entice

audiences to come to see a coming movie. The trailer

showcases a deep understanding of what students have

been studying in class recently.

Processing The completed trailer is the processing for

this activity.

Common Core and NETS Standards In the course of this lesson and participating in the classroom activity, students will

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.7 Conduct short as well as more sustained research

projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under

investigation.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.8 Gather relevant information from multiple print and

digital sources, assess the credibility and accuracy of each source, and integrate the

information while avoiding plagiarism.

NETS 2. Communication & Collaboration: Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others

a. interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing

a variety of digital environments and media.

b. communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences

using a variety of media and formats.

d. contribute to project teams to produce original works or solve problems.

Materials

• 4 copies, each of adjectives –

based on total # of students

in class divided by four,

rounded up.

• iPad – 1 per group

• iMovie App (see iTunes for

cost and download)

• Student Handout – 1 copy

per student

• Trailer Storyboard – 1 per

group. (credit for Storyboard

Preview Suggested time: 5 minutes

1. Greet students at the door. Distribute Student

Handout to students as they enter the room.

2. Project movie trailer. Have students view an age-

appropriate movie trailer from a coming attraction.

(suggested site for trailers:

http://movies.msn.com/movies/family/coming-soon/)

3. Placing Trailer Adjectives. After viewing the trailer,

place four copies of each adjective at the front of the

class. Have students come and retrieve one adjective.

(Prior to class, take the total students in your class

and divide by four, rounding up, to get the number of

unique adjectives needed for this). 1. Interesting

2. Exciting

3. Curious

4. Enthusiastic

5. Lively

6. Delightful

7. Colossal

8. Splendid

4. Describing Trailer with Adjectives. Have students

group themselves with the others who have the same

adjective. Give them one minute as a group to come

up with a sentence regarding the trailer they saw that

uses that adjective.

5. Have Groups Share. Call on each group to quickly

share their sentence. Tell students that good movie

trailers entice audiences by choosing carefully from

the storyline and build intrigue with narration. Tell

students they will create a movie trailer for the

content they have been studying. The groups they are

with right now will be the people they will work with.

Problem Solving Groupwork Suggested time: 90 minutes

1. Place students into quads. Have students arrange

themselves with their new group based on the

preview activity.

2. Explain the purpose of the activity. Explain to

students that they will be pretending to work for a

movie production company responsible for producing

a coming attractions trailer that will entice people to

come see a movie that deals with the content they

have been studying. Show the following example on

the American Revolution as a model for the students:

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BxKSkroOfLELY25mZ2dMYWRjVjg/edit

3. Procedures for the Activity. Using the Student

Handout, go over the procedures for completing the

iMovie trailer.

1) Assign group roles

2) Select a trailer template

3) Create a rough draft storyboard

4) Gather needed props/images

5) Film scenes and/or insert images

6) Edit the trailer

7) Produce the trailer

4. Groups begin Activity. Students should check in

with you at the end of each step to sign off on their

progress though the activity.

5. iMovie Showcase. When all groups have produced

their trailer, arrange the class in theater style and play

each group’s trailer.

6. Debrief Experience with Students. Ask the

students:

• What did you learn about the topic during

this activity?

• What did you learn about the technology

and tools you used during this activity?

• How could this activity be improved the next

time?
