    RemoteSystem Access

    iMachine Control

Remote monitoring, control and programming of devices can reduceservice visits required and allow first class customer service to beprovided to end customers. It minimizes downtime, maximisesproductivity and reduces servicing costs by allowing the possibility offault diagnosis without visiting site.

However the problem is knowing how to set up a complicatedremote access system. Imagine being able to see whats happeningon the factory floor from your office, hotel room or home, miles fromsite! Also imagine being alerted to a problem with the system assoon as it is detected. The devices being monitored could beanywhere in the world.

IMOs powerful i controller can make that possible. Remote accessto a control system is available in two ways, using Ethernet and theInternet or by GPRS modem, your process suddenly becomesconnected to the outside world.

    i Controller #1

    Digital I/O controls theprocess

    Thermocouple analogueinputs

Ladder program logic formonitoring andcontrolling the process

Ethernet card forconnection to theinternet via an external

static IP address Connection of a colour

    HMI for operator input

    i Controller #2

Connection to i #1 viaiCan, allowing sharing ofdata and connections

    Drives are connectedvia RS485 Modbuscomms

Ladder program logic formonitoring andcontrolling theconnected drives

GPRS modem allowstext message alarms tobe sent to engineersmobile phones

Modem also provides asecond connectionoption to the outsideworld via GPRS

    RemoteProgramming

With remote i controllers connected to theinternet via static IP addresses, a chosenremote station can be reached by the iConfig software just by configuring its IPaddress. Since the two controllers areconnect via iCAN we can connect to eitherone using its node id.

Once a problem has been identified by theremote monitoring software, furtherinvestigation can continue via the debugand monitoring features of theprogramming software.

The program can even be upgraded ifnecessary via this remote connection.

Using a second static IP address thesoftware in the colour HMI screen canalso be upgraded remotely.

Please note that great care should be taken when designing a system with remote connectioncapability. Under no circumstances should the remote connection be able to control safety criticalaspects of the system. Safe guards should be built into the internal logic of the control systems toprevent remote operation causing danger to operators. The remote operator should never assumethings are safe at the other end, and should confirm with an engineer on site that the system is in asecure state before remote diagnosis is attempted.
