Volume 18 Issue 3 March 2016 Overton’s Free Newspaper - delivered to every household monthly Imogen’s Charity Haircut On February 4th I decided to cut 13’ of hair off for charity! I had always wanted to do this when I was younger. At the start of January I started to think about it properly and decided on a short list of my favourite charities I could raise money for and donate my hair to! After a full weekend of researching I came up with The Little Princess Charity, a charity that provides wigs to children suffering with cancer and other hair loss conditions such as Alopecia. When I was reading about the charity it really touched my heart and that’s when I knew I really wanted to donate to that charity! The Little Princess Trust spends £350 to give one child a wig, so I set my target as £700 to buy 2 children a wig, as well as donating my hair. When I had my hair cut I was really emotional as I loved it so much, my hair was always my trade mark and it made me feel more confident about myself being around people I didn’t really know. I had my hair cut in The Maelor School Penley with one of the history teachers, Mr. Jones, who shaved his hair off for Macmillan Cancer. It took place in the main hall at 12:45 during lunch time and everybody paid £1 to enter. The hall was packed; it made me really nervous seeing everybody there. When Kate, my hairdresser, got her bright purple shiny scissors out I felt sick… I had never been so nervous in all my life until she sat me down in the chair to cut my hair off! The scissors were half way through cutting my hair off as a tear came down my face… I was really emotional!! Thank you to everyone who donated and supported me and a huge thank you to Kate Williams for rearranging everything, so that she could be there to cut my hair. Imogen’s Charity Haircut !On February 4th I decided to cut 13’ of hair off for charity! I had always wanted to do this when I was younger. Country Beat ……………………………………..……!by PCSO Lynne Maurice I would just like to bring to everybody’s attention and ask you to be extra vigilant as we have had a few garages tampered with in the last few weeks in the Marchwiel area, so far nothing reported in Overton but be aware. There have also been a few burglaries from out-houses, barns, etc in rural areas, so if you see anyone/thing suspicious please dial 101 and give as much information as you can, type of vehicle, colour, reg. number of vehicle, description of persons etc. Please be aware of what is in your shed/garage/outside storage, and check them regularly. Fit padlocks to shed and garage doors, with 2 heavy duty pad-bolts or hasp, a third down from top and a third up from the bottom. Ensure the shed is in good condition, replace any damaged or rotten areas with new wood. Fit key operated locks on the corners of each opening window, or consider screwing them permanently shut from the inside if you never open them. Fix mesh or bars on the inside of the windows. Tools stored in sheds can be used to break into your house. Remove and secure items that may be used such as ladders and garden tools. Consider having lockable steel boxes fitted to the floor to store your tools in, or anchor posts fitted to the floor to secure larger tools and equipment. Thread a chain through all garden tool handles, lawn mowers, cycles and other items and use a strong padlock. Never leave a garage or garden shed unlocked, especially if it has a connecting door to the house. A burglar could get in and work on the door inside without being seen. Many thanks Lynne Lynne Maurice PCSO 0151 North Wales Police Overton Police Station, Mobile 07854 352 815 Phone 01978 348425 / extn. 48425 email: [email protected]

Dear Residents and Visitors, Since I wrote in last month's Oracle about the 'dog poo problem' in the village there has been absolutely no improvement! Some dog owners are still not picking up their dog's excrement. I can only assume that these owners do not read the Oracle therefore those of you who do read it, please will you pass the message on to others. Dog poo is unsightly, gets stuck to shoes, pram wheels, wheelchair and bicycle wheels etc. and the fact that dog owners are not picking it up is utterly disgraceful. Pene Coles

Musings from the Manse

by Rev’d Phillip Poole I wonder if you recall the wonderful Sunday School hymn which begins, "Tell me the stories of Jesus I love to hear." The Gospels are full of stories that can inspire, amaze, puzzle or challenge us. My favourites as a child were the stories where Jesus confounded his critics with a clever answer to a difficult question. Today I most enjoy the stories of Jesus' meetings with the ordinary people of Bible times - people Jesus welcomed and accepted just as they were, but whose lives were changed when they met him. In some senses the best stories of all in the Bible are those which tell us about Holy Week and the end of Jesus' life, and this is certainly where the Gospels focus most of their attention. Jesus is a heroic figure as he sets his face towards Jerusalem, but then reveals his vulnerability as he prays weeping in Gethsemane. There is tension as Jesus comes into conflict with Jerusalem's immovable religious bureaucracy and a rising sense of foreboding as we hear how hidden enemies are plotting his downfall. We are shamed and outraged by the story of his arrest and crucifixion, but we are humbled to see that even in the last minutes of his life his concern is for others - "Father, forgive them..." And then comes the ultimate 'twist in the tale' as the Gospel story ends with the miracle of the crucified Jesus alive again following his resurrection. In Mark’s gospel an angel tells the women who have come to anoint Jesus’ body, "He is not here. He is risen. Go, tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.' " For the disciples Galilee was home, and it was back at home, in the familiar places and among the ordinary stuff of their lives that they would meet Jesus again. And where should we look for the risen Jesus? Perhaps we will look for him in church in an Easter Sunday worship service, and he will certainly not disappoint us. But let's remember that Jesus waits to meet us at home too, in the ordinary come-day go-day of life. We can enjoy his presence and his peace every day if we pray and think of him. May God bless us all this Lent and Easter as we share again in the wonderful true story of Jesus our friend, "living and loving right to the end." Resurrection joy and Easter blessings to you all, Phil

Christmas tree lights on the High Street!Prior to last Christmas the Community Council purchased new Christmas lights for the existing trees. This breathed some new life into the trees and lengthened their lifespan by a few years. The feedback received from some residents has been favourable, so the Community Council has decided to keep the existing decorations for a few more years. There is a requirement for some electrical repair work to be carried out but the contractor who puts up the trees will carry this out free of charge. At the consultation held last year , prior to one of our council meetings, those who attended requested that we considered having a Christmas Tree outside the Village Hall. The Village Hall Management Committee are in agreement with this, so this Christmas there will be a tree displayed outside the Village Hall.Should you have any questions or concerns please contact Mrs Katrina Chalk, Clerk to Overton Community Council - [email protected] - 01978 710055 (Mondays and Wednesdays)

Calling all Overton ramblers Are you a regular walker in the Overton area? Would you like to take part in group walks? The Community Council needs walkers to walk the local footpaths, alone or in pairs or groups on a regular basis and to report back on the state of the paths. Overton has 45 public footpaths which include the long distance Maelor Way and riverside walks through Llan y Cefn Woods and to Bangor on Dee as well as to Penley and the Shropshire border. Wrexham Council depends on walkers to report problems and to keep stiles free of overgrowth for easy access and the Rambler's Association are happy to supply secateurs for this purpose. To this end and to enjoy the beautiful countryside around Overton I am hoping to form a small ramblers group. Some of you may remember a similar group led by Ken Farrell nearly 20 years ago which was extremely popular. If you are interested please contact Pene Coles 01978 710598 or email:- [email protected].

Tracing my Overton connections !My name is David Morris and I lived at The Loop Farm, Ellesmere from 1948 to 1963 and worked at Criftins Farm 1963 to 1981 before emigrating to Canada in July 1981. I was researching at the Alberta Family History Society library in Calgary, Alberta and realised how much Overton on Dee has had such an effect on the genealogy and history of the people in my tree. I have memories of Overton Village Hall, going to dances there, playing badminton, and playing whist there too. !I remember Joe Heighway of Queensbridge Farm, because he either owned the equipment for threshing, bagging the grain and baling the straw, or he worked as part of the gang who operated the machinery and came to work at the Loop Farm. I read on the Overton Oracle website that Joe Heighway sadly passed away in 2007. Joe also worked at Criftins Farm, Ellesmere in the 1940s - early 50s, farmed between 1919-1952 by my grandfather, Tom Hughes and my grandmother Katie nee Trelfa. Samuel & Lucy Trelfa also retired and lived at Bryn Tyrion, Knolton Bryn,1918 to 1923. I would like to find out about these families. Also has anyone got any information on John Green, father & daughter Eliza Green 1856-1923 of Knolton Bryn, Overton. !By coincidence my first wife’s father, Major Herbert Alfred Popkin, Officer in the Canadian Army, was stationed in Overton before D-day WWII and I never found out why. I always wondered how the area of “Queensbridge” was named. Mercy Hughes, Nurse in Overton, married Geoff Hughes and they were Aunt & Uncle to me. I could go on. If there are any stories photos or family tree connections with the names of any one mentioned, I would love you to contact me by email: [email protected] or leave a message for the Overton Oracle who will pass it on to me.

The first one will be for Overton Playgroup on 4th March 2016. The Wales V England 6 Nations match will be on two TVs, one in each bar on 12th March, followed by the Soul and Motown night from 9pm.

An Invitation to a Village Community Day The Overton Community Gardening Group invites Community Litter Pickers, pupils and parents from St. Mary's school and all interested residents to join them for a Community Day on Saturday March 19th. The event will begin at 10am outside the Scout Hut when the litter pickers will set out to do their job, while willing volunteers tidy up and replant the wicking boxes ready for the new growing season. Drinks and cakes will be served at 11am before everyone moves across to the school where we will be building a new wicking

box and helping to prepare the kitchen garden ready for spring. Everyone will be welcome at the school even if you only have half an hour to spare or are unable to dig, or struggle with a lack of green fingers. Shane Hughes (Keep Wales

Tidy and Grow Wild) will provide litter picking tools, Wildbanks Conservation will provide gardening equipment and all offers of home made cakes will be gratefully received. The day promises to be great fun and full of community spirit. For further information phone St. Mary's School 01978 710370 or Pene Coles 01978 710598. The Community Gardening Group will be holding their next meeting on Thursday March 10th in the White Horse; everyone welcome.

Your Vote Matters Don’t Lose it !Assembly Member Ken Skates has warned ‘missing’ voters to make sure they are able to make their voices heard after new figures showed hundreds of people have been removed from the electoral register. Figures show almost 700 people in this constituency have slipped off the electoral register in just 12 months following changes made by the Government. !Mr Skates, who represents Clwyd South, said: “Anyone who wants to be able to vote should be registered – it’s a democratic right. Every voter counts equally, so everyone should be able to have their say. The old system was simple and straightforward. It ensured as many people as possible had the right to vote in elections. The new rules resulted in a million people – many of them young – were in danger of being denied a vote.” !Previously, one person could register all those eligible to vote in each household, but the Westminster Government changed the rules so that each person now has to register individually. Many weren’t aware, and a huge number therefore slipped off the register without realising. Students living away from home are particularly affected. Mr Skates added: “Voting is a basic right which empowers individuals to have their say on the major issues in our society. Being on the register can also help boost your credit rating and can, therefore, help with loans, credit cards and mortgage applications.” You can register on line www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or ring 01978 292020 for an application form. To vote in the May elections you need to register by 18th April.

Beer at Market Drayton means it’s the Joules Brewery Tour !On February 8th, at 5pm the White Horse opened its doors on a Monday! It could only be a gathering of beer loving men and women preparing to depart on a Joules brewery tour! The first surprise was that when the coach arrived, Kev got into the driving seat – had we known this in advance most of us would have been loath to part with a tenner for the bus, but, no worries, he delivered us safely to the brewery in Market Drayton. !The evening started with free beers and talk about the brewery followed by the tour. This included a 70 foot climb to the top of the building – we now understood why several of our group had stayed in the bar!! Some of us were returning to the brewery for the first time in 5 years so it was interesting to note the differences For example Joules has grown from owning 18 pubs to 72, and the impressive figure of £24,000 which is the cost of each week’s

brew – an expensive mistake if something goes wrong!! !Returning to the bar we all had a go at pulling pints, some better than others. Kevin and Olwen had their eyes on those they would, or would not, trust behind the bar! This was followed by pork baps with the pork supplied by Fordhall Organic Farm where the pigs are reared on the mash from the brewery. Fortunately, Kevin, who had been seen with a pint in his hand, was not driving us back and the Lakeside driver delivered us safely back to Overton, where the pub was opened again for a night-cap! A great time was had by all! More photos on the website www.overtonoracle.com

Banner on Argoed Lane!Last year a village business placed a banner on Argoed Lane to promote their business. Due to planning regulations and the obvious problem of 'it starts a precedent' , the business was requested to remove the banner, by amicable agreement. Recently another business has placed a banner (with the permission of the landowner) on the same site. The business owner was approached by the community council and advised that the planning authority were likely to be in touch to request the banner be removed, which is indeed the case. After the aforementioned had occurred, the Clerk to the Council received an anonymous letter referring to the recent banner being displayed. Overton Community Council strives to support the community, which includes all the businesses within the village; we do this through organising the village fete (a community event), and advertising events taking place at different venues throughout the village etc. We are an impartial and fair minded organisation who value its community. We would request that the person who wrote the anonymous letter contacts the Clerk in order to discuss their concerns and the content of their letter.
