What is migration?

Migration (human) is the movement of people from one place in the world to another for the purpose of taking up permanent or semi-permanent residence, usually across a political boundary. An example of "semi-permanent residence" would be the seasonal movements of migrant farm laborers. People can either choose to move ("voluntary migration") or be forced to move ("involuntary migration").What examples can you give:

Immigrant: A person who migrates to another country, usually for permanent residence.

Immigration in America began the moment the first explorers set foot in the new world and began colonizing. As our nation matured, the idea of American citizenship developed into what it is today. This web quest will help you understand a little bit more about the history of immigration in the United States, define the different stages of becoming a citizen and give you a chance to take the test given to those applying for citizenship.

Immigration Push pull factor

When people migrate, they don’t just leave one place and magically arrive somewhere else. Often, migrants are pushed out of their native lands and pulled toward a new place. This idea is called the push-pull factor.

Push factors are the facts of life that make a person want to leave. Don’t have a job? Treated badly by your government? Lose all of your crops in a drought? These problems can lead someone to look for a better life in another country. 

Pull factors are what attract migrants to come and live in one country over another. America’s popularity as an immigrant destination is due to our democratic government, industry, and general security.

Why People Came to America Immigrants left their homes and came to the

United States for many reasons. They left because of economic, religious and political factors. Some came to avoid war, corrupt governments or religious persecution. Still others came because they couldn’t find work in their own country. From as early as 1620 when the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock, America was seen as the land of freedom and opportunity.

In Europe, the Pilgrims were persecuted for their religious beliefs. They came to America to find religious freedom.

Economic opportunities also drew people to America. As the country grew and developed, immigrants could find jobs and the opportunity to own their own land.

The number of people immigrating to the United States was not constant during every period of American’s history. As the chart indicates, immigration grew rapidly between 1870 and 1900
