IMMEDIATE DENTURES: (IDs):
- Removable Partial or Complete Dentures made:- Prior to the extraction of teeth.
- Fitted immediately at the same time / visit at which:- teeth are extracted from patients’ mouth.
INDICATIONS FOR IDs:People who cannot afford to be without
teeth for even the shortest period of time:- Young Ladies & …... All modern ladies.- Politicians / Priests / Maulvies / Teachers.- Lawyers / Bankers / Attorneys.- Executives.- Showbiz peoples.
CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR IDs:Patients with history of:
- Rheumatic Heart Disease / Prosthetic Heart valves (Risk of Bacteremia).- Prosthetic hips / Prosthetic joints.- Abnormal post-extraction bleeding.- Hemophiliacs / Factor IIIV deficiency.- Radiotherapy for Head & Neck cancer.
Patients having gross oral sepsis & neglected mouths.
CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR IDs:…ContdIDs not made for patients:
- with reduced intelligence.- who do not understand the importance
of IDs.- unable to come for regular check-ups.- requiring extensive oral surgical procedures including:
- removal of impacted teeth, cystic lesions & tumours etc.
Types of Immediate Dentures:Complete Flanged IDs:Flange enhance retention & stability of ID.Protects sockets & promotes healing.Incorporated in IDs when undercut is:
Shallow (< 2mm deep & covered by thick mucosa.
Undercut corrected surgically.
Partial Flanged IDs:When surgical correction of u/cut not
possible.Flange extends just beyond maximum
Height of contour (bulbosity) of the alv. process.u/cut engaged & accepted by mucosal compression.
Comfortable for the patient.Desired esthetic also ensured.Later on flange completed.
Flangeless / Socket-Fit / Gum-fit IDs:
Not made for lower jaw (smaller DBA).Artificial teeth fitted in or close to sockets.Provided when prospects for retention &
stability of ID are:- good due to:
- well-extended posterior flanges.
Impressions for IDs:Preliminary impressions;Recorded in Dentate or Partially Dentate Stock
Trays.
Final Impressions for IDs:Normally recorded by using:
- two-piece special tray.In the absence of deep tissue undercuts:
- One-piece special tray may be used.
FINAL IMPRESSION RECORDED IN SPECIAL TRAY
FINAL IMPRESSION RECORDED IN 2-PART TRAY
FITTING IDs:Check for sharp edges / spots & correct.Extract teeth to be replaced by the ID.Insert ID in mouth.Do not attempt more refine corrections at
this stage. Better done at next visit (24 - 48 hours).
Necessary corrections in single attempt.If gross occlusal errors:
- Correct one ID and replace it later.
Timeline for Insertion of ID:Total Duration of Appointment For ID Insertion Visit:
15 + 45 + 15 = 75 minutes
