But even if 2020 continues to be a dumpster fire, there’s the thing to be most thankful this year: the Gospel. Jesus was born for you, took upon Himself all your sins, lived your life, and died your death. By His Good Friday and Easter, you are saved. He’s given us forgiveness from God, mercy, and grace. He’s given us eternal life. Which makes us thankful this year—even 2020! God has given you your family, your friends, your church, your work, your house, your apartment, your clothes, your food, your drink, your pets, and all that you have and ever needed. He’s gathering us together — even social distanced — for another Thanksgiving to remind us to give thanks for His gifts. That’s a gift too! Give thanks always! I’m giving thanks for you this year! May God grant you a wonderful and thankful Thanksgiving with your family! Be thankful! For this year and for what the future has for you! But thank God most of all for the forgiveness of sins in Jesus. In the Name of Jesus. Amen.

Dear Pastor Borghardt and Members oflmmanuel,

Greetings to you and your congregation in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, from the Congregation of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Gulf Breeze, Florida!

As a congregation we believe that it is important to pray for the welfare and needs of our sister congregations and their pastors, that the Lord may bless you, sustain, and continue to grant you His blessings and peace.

This week the congregation of Good Shepherd will be praying for you, your congregation and your community. You will be included in our prayers during worship services, and throughout the week in our individual and small group devotions. Our hope is that this will be a blessing to you.

May God bless you and keep you, may His face shine on you and be gracious to you, and may He grant you His peace. Amen.

    Pastor Jim d'Entremont

  • From Our Head Elder

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Our church is super blessed with very dedicated members that are working very

diligently to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ! I am very excited about the future of

our church. We have accomplished so much with all the volunteers that continually

step up to the plate to serve! Our offering has remained strong even through the

COVID-19 pandemic. The actual Associate Pastor Call Process has started. The Elders

unanimously approved the Official Associate Pastor Call Process Document at our

October meeting. Copies of the actual document are available in the church office or

at the Wednesday/Sunday Services. The three-week member nomination period

ended this past Sunday. Our members nominated 15 pastors for the Call Process. I

have been in contact with Pastor Eric Johnson-LCMS Southern District President about

the Call Process. I am currently in the process of contacting all 15 of the Pastors about

whether they will be open to consider an Associate Pastor Call from Immanuel

Lutheran Church. After contacting all the Pastors and compiling my list, I will send that

list to Pastor Eric Johnson for vetting. I should have my calls completed and my list

confirmed by the first of next week. It will probably be several weeks before we get

the vetted list back from Pastor Eric Johnson. The Official Call Committee has been

determined. The Call Document states that the Elder Chairman will serve as the Call

    Committee Chairman.

    (Continued on next page)

  • The Call Committee will have nine members. The members are as follows:

    Jimmy Cox-Elder Chairman/Call Committee Chairman

    Woody Lemon-Elder

    Ryan Hutchison-Elder

    Scott Broberg-Elder

    Jaret Jenkins-Elder

    Pam Searing-Board of Education

    Gayle Broyles-Board of Evangelism

    Lisa Kimball-Board of PreSchool

    Ann Engle-At-Large Member

The Call Committee will meet during the next two weeks to elect a Secretary for the

committee. We will also develop the guidelines we will use for choosing the top

three candidates and ranking them in order of preference.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about the

Associate Pastor Call Process. Please remember to LOVE JESUS and LOVE EACH

OTHER during the entire process! Pray that Jesus will lead us and give us direction

    during this entire process.

    In Christ,

    Jimmy Cox-Elder Chairman

    Treasurer’s Report YEARLY BUDGET PROCESS

The church committees and Council are presently working the 2021 operating budget. I would like to outline the process we practice here at Immanuel. The Stewardship Committee has distributed pledge cards to the congregation, and the total income of these cards will be used to help set the budget. The treasurer will provide a report, at the end of each month, to each committee with their expenditures to date, their budgeted expenditures as of that date, and their total 2020 budget as passed by the voters. There will be a column with their 2021 budget request for each expense account in their budget.

The Financial Secretary will receive all pledge cards as they are provided and update a total expected income for the budget year. Each committee will work their budgets in committee meetings and determine their budget request. They will pass updated requests to the Finance Committee. The process of reports and updates will be repeated over two or three months, as pledge cards come in. The Finance Committee will evaluate committee requests against the total running pledge card report received from the Financial Secretary. The Finance Committee will respond to the various committees as to the practicality of their requests. Finance will work with each committee to resolve issues of budget incompatibility. When the pledge card income, various committee budget requests, and the Financial Committee feel we have a workable budget, the budget is set and presented to the Voter’s Meeting, usually in December, for final approval. Item Of Special Interest- If an individual or family pledge is of a certain amount and is given on a weekly/monthly schedule, it must be realized that the budget is set on those amounts being received. The Financial Secretary has noted that if a worship service is missed, that contribution was not made good later in the budget year. Not receiving pledged contributions could lead to budget scramble and reductions during the year if income is not made up in other ways. The final yearly budget always hangs by the kitchen window bulletin board.. Please see a Financial Committee member if you have any questions or concerns.

  • Financial Report For November 2020 Newsletter Budget status as of 30 September 2020— 2020 Budget $524,691 Actual Income $368,394 Budgeted Income $393,519 Under budget by $25,125 Actual Expenditures $381,955 Budgeted Expenditures $393,519 Under budget by $11,564 Net Income (Actual Income minus Actual Expenditures) (-$13,561) 2020 Church Operating Budget- Our church is very blessed by your continued cooperation and participation with the budget process, especially during this Covid-19 pandemic. Many folks are following guidelines and are staying away from the church premises, but are continuing to send in their pledges and donations. A great big THANK YOU. We are also receiving funding from new families coming to Immanuel as well as folks outside the community who are watching on video, live and recorded. We are into the third quarter of the fiscal year, and not doing as well as we budgeted for the year. However, we must maintain vigilance as we always have church maintenance issues and are in a call process for an associate pastor. The Church lighting project, installing LED lights, is complete. The Education Wing floor refurbishment is complete. The new Electronic Sign project is underway and should be complete this month. All this has been done due to you, the congregation, because of your contributions to the Building Fund, a designated fund set aside from the normal operating budget. A great big Thank You. Airline Drive Sign Replacement- The voters approved the replacement of the old outdoor sign. This purchase will be paid from two designated funds, the New Building Fund and New Sign Fund. Education Wing Floor Project- The wing floor is complete and the walls were totally repainted with new wall molding added. Glenda and Earl Kroll were the major movers with the project and had plenty of volunteer help. Thank you folks Other ongoing issues will be stacked according to need and finances. We will continue to fund future projects through the New Building designated fund. If you would like to contribute to this fund, please do so. A monthly update of how we are doing on the current year budget is posted on the kitchen bulletin board. The 2020 budget was set at the December Voter’s Meeting of $524,691. Church maintenance and modernization projects are always ongoing and project suggestions or participation is appreciated. 2021 Church Operating Budget- The call has gone out to each board for their budget requests. If you have any questions or suggestions about a budget item, please see someone in that board or a Finance Committee member. The yearly budget is complex and is worked during the last quarter to be presented to the Voter’s Meeting held in December. Treasurer Position- Again, I am still very happy to report that Tammy Szekacs is now training with me to become your Treasurer in the future. A great big THANK YOU Tammy. She has seized the job and is a very valuable asset to the position. Pray for congregational solidarity, our pastor and all church workers, for the missions of the church, world peace, government agreement, for those involved with finding a cure for the Corona Virus, other world disasters, and for those in need.

  • PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hello Immanuel Friends! I pray this continues to find you and your family

healthy and well. November is the month where we celebrate and give thanks to God for the bountiful harvest and the many blessings we've received during the year. Yes, some have encountered hardships, and our hearts go out to them, but overall, here at Immanuel, we are blessed, and as District President Johnson said, we are Blessed to be a Blessing to others. In that vein, we will again this year deliver meals to some of the shut-ins Served by the Bossier and Caddo Councils on Aging. I have contacted and spoke with both agencies and have approval to go ahead. They will give us names of those most in need of a meal on Thanksgiving morning for those who are willing to deliver. There is a sign-up sheet in the fellowship hall on the bulletin board between the windows where you can tell me how many meals you're willing to deliver. Most folks, even those who take say 10 or 12, can get it done between 10 and 12:00. We will have meals boxed by 10:00 for you to pick up. The past two years we've done 80 meals, and I would like to make that our minimum goal again this year. Both agencies have asked that we are properly masked and gloved when handling food and delivering, and that everyone has their temperature checked before participating, and we will honor their requests. So, if you are just sitting around Thanksgiving morning wishing you had something to do, please sign up and come join us. Thank you in advance, Yours in Christ, Mark

  • BOARD OF CONGREGATIONAL CONCERNS

    Opportunity for Service

Immanuel has begun a new opportunity for you to participate in service to other individuals in our

congregation. It is call “Take Them A Meal”. This program allows us to help members who are: 1. recovering after surgery, 2. recovering

after childbirth 3. Experiencing a long term illness without a lot of family support or any other

life changing event where some support is needed.

The Board of Congregational Concerns has begun the program. Each recipient in need has a schedule set up for them indicating how long the person needs a meal, what their likes/dislikes or allergies are and how often the meal is needed. This name is sent to all members who have indicated either on the Time and Talent Sheets or in person that they would be willing to cook a meal or take a meal for someone who needs this. Gail Pearce is the Administrator for this program. Call her at (318-746-0627) for more information or to volunteer. If you have previously signed up and are no longer getting the schedule, please call so we can get you back in the rotation.

Renesting is Reinvented during COVID -19 Immanuel church has recently seen an increase in new people attending our services. For this, we are truly blessed and eager to engage these persons. You may have noticed plastic bins in the Fellowship hall with the words “Renesting” on them. One of Immanuel’s outreach activities is working with the Renesting Project, Inc. This is a community outreach project, to provide reclaimed furniture and household goods to those transitioning from homelessness. Since the COVID situation has kept people at a distance, the warehouse is not receiving donations like they did before March of this year. You now have to call the warehouse and make an appointment on a Thursday or 2nd Saturday to bring your items into the location. TheyYou can call and sign up for a donation appointment at 318-747-5520. If persons are interested in hearing more about this activity please call or e-mail Gail Pearce at 318-746-0627 or [email protected].

    ANNIVERSARIES

    BIRTHDAYS

Sewing Mission Outreach Mission Outreach participants continue to be hard at work. We have much to be thankful for as we sew on projects. During these months we have received donated fabrics to cut and sew and these have kept us very busy; all of which we are so thankful for. However we have used up all the batting supplies that RRQ has provided. So some of us are providing what is needed and have ventured into making comfort quilts (from orphan blocks, remnants, personal stashes, and fabrics not wanted for Love Wrappers) to send to South Louisiana to be given in the hurricane relief efforts. Leadership from LCMS Southern District has connections with headquarters of the relief efforts in and around Lake Charles and will (we hope) take care of transporting and distributing the quilts. The plan is to complete our projects and send them south about the first of November. The point of sharing this is... if you want to participate in this project, get your finished quilts to me by the end of October. Thank You. We are making a variety of sizes (42” x 54” or larger); these are to offer love and comfort to any age or size and is not particularly a bed quilt; maybe a sofa or chair throw, etc. Our vision for this project is when the pastors, vicars, DCE, elders, and counselors go visiting the families they can take a quilt and share that our extended church family has been and is thinking about them and praying for them. These hurting families are loved and cared about; we can’t physically be there or fix their damages; but, we can pray and offer a reminder that they are loved and never forgotten. As a reminder, Mission Outreach is open to anyone who would like to learn to quilt or would like to make Love Wrappers as a service project of RRQ. Your first project will be a love wrapper (sewing the top, layering, quilting, and binding). After you complete that project you are welcome to bring your own fabrics and supplies and make a quilt of your own. When we supply the materials, it is a charitable offering (a Love Wrapper); most are donated to the Neonatal Intensive Care Units at our local hospitals. These are excellent projects to learn and practice quilting techniques and improve your skills. If you would like to join us, send me an email and I will put you on the notification list for when I send out reminders. [email protected] Please make a note.... October and November Mission Outreach meeting dates have changed from earlier postings. We plan to meet Friday and Saturday, October 23-24 and November 20-21. No scheduled meeting in December; if/when it gets scheduled an email will go out announcing the date. Happy Sewing and may God bless the works of our hands, Cathy Ward

  • WHAT IS THE LWML

The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) is an official auxiliary of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. For over 77 years, the LWML has focused on affirming each woman’s relationship with Christ, encouraging and equipping women to live out their Christian lives in active mission ministries and to support global missions. Mite box contributions amount to millions of dollars that fund district and national mission grants.

PURPOSE? The mission of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League is to assist each woman of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod in affirming her relationship with the Triune God so that she is enabled to use her gifts in ministry to the people of the world.

WHAT IS A MITES BOX? Based on the Biblical account of the widow's mite (Luke 21:1-4), the Mite Box is intended for regular contributions of mites - offerings given above and beyond support given to the congregation and Synod. Mite box contributions amount to millions of dollars that fund district and national mission grants and implement the LWML program."

    MITES BOXES

Please support our chapter of the LWML. MITES donations are down and we can only fund one of our projects as of today. Please put your change in a

MITES Box in support of our missions. Thank you!

    Joanne Davis

Our November LWML meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 17, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of a guest speaker, we will have a Bible Study titled, “God Cares for the Poor and Needy” led by Shirley Fortune. Please make plans to join us. Our in-gathering will be for Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission. Their Thanksgiving shopping list includes canned sweet potatoes, brown sugar, marshmallows, cream of mushroom soup, canned green beans, fried onions, and they are always in need of paper towels and toilet tissue. Monetary gifts are also appreciated.

We are having a great time in the classroom! Each week brings a different theme, plus new lessons in several categories. Below is a sample from the week of October 5th through 9th: WHAT WE ARE LEARNING: Theme: Community Helpers (policemen, firemen, doctors, plumbers, electricians, lawyers, etc.) Literacy: Mr. Pine’s Purple House Math: Number Recognition 11-30 Science: Sink or Float Phonics: Letter Ii Character Building: Joyful Sight Words: Said, For, Up, Look Bible Lesson: Baby Moses & God Chooses Moses Bible Verse: Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7 Enrichments: Monday – Music; Tuesday – Chapel; Wednesday – Art; Thursday, P.E. For the last week of October, the theme was PUMPKINS! The Science lesson was Exploring Pumpkins. THAT could get messy! Hands on is a fun and memorable way to learn! The children also got hands-on experience with Pumpkin Playdough! A recipe is below: 1 15-oz can pumpkin puree 2 cups cornstarch (the amount will vary depending on the moisture content in the can of puree) Dump the can of pumpkin puree into a bowl. Begin to shake in the cornstarch about half a cup at a time. Use a spoon or spatula to stir and combine. Stir and add until it reaches a playdough-like texture. Feel with your hands to ensure it is no longer sticky. If you accidentally add too much cornstarch, just add a few drops of water to soften it back up. You can also add a few tablespoons of pumpkin pie spice for an extra festive scent. Do you know a child who would benefit from our preschool? Tell the parents to stop by and talk to Mike or call the church office to arrange a tour.
