"One mightier than I is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.
I have baptized you with water; he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
In today’s Gospel of Mark, we hear about the preaching and mission of John the Baptist. It is clear that the expectation of the people is high as they go out into the desert to hear John’s message. But John proclaimed: “a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins” as it was written in Isaiah “A voice of one crying out in the desert: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths’."
Yes, in today’s Gospel, we are admonished to prepare the “way of the Lord.” But what is this “way of the Lord”? It is a life of “holiness and devotion” (Second Reading), a life of “repentance” and “forgiveness" (Gospel), and a life of hearing the “glad tidings” of God's salvation and announcing this “good news” (First Reading) to the world. This is the way John the Baptist lived; this is the way of life into which Christ baptizes us with the Holy Spirit!
Continuing on our Advent journey, we have scheduled our Advent Pardon & Peace Reconciliation Service on Thursday, December 21st at 7pm. This is a time a time for reconciliation, and private and communal prayer. External priests will be available for private confessions.
And just before Christmas, Santa is coming to town (in our Parish Hall) for a hearty pancake breakfast on Sunday, Dec. 17th, 10am-12noon! There will be time for families to take individual photos. And, Santa, will also have a beautiful gift for all our children. Don’t miss it!
You can find our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Mass schedule herein this Bulletin. Please invite all your families and friends to share in the joy of the birth of Jesus and in all the love and peace that only He can bring!
I hope to see all of you today at our annual Parish Christmas Pageant and Luncheon celebration at 1pm in our Parish Hall. I want to express my gratitude and thanks to all those volunteers who spent many hours of preparation in helping put this event together! Hopefully, next weekend we will have some nice photos here in our Bulletin.
Lastly, please don’t forget this is the last weekend (or tomorrow before noon at our Parish Office) for our “Giving Tree”. These gifts really do make for happy moments and smiles for residents and patients at New Bridge Medical Center (formerly Bergen Regional Medical Center).
God Bless you. May He guide us on our journey of faith this Advent and always. Fr. Jacek

FAITH FORMATION
Mark’s announcement of the beginning of the Good News is a resounding proclamation that now, in Jesus, the long-promised visitation of God has begun. God has sent a messenger, John the Baptist, to “prepare the way.” John the Baptist diverted attention from himself to Jesus. His ministry was not about himself but about the “one mightier than I who is coming after me.” Our own Advent journey call us to walk in the sandal prints of John the Baptist and become forerunners of Jesus - people who draw attention away from themselves and toward Jesus!
ADVENT PRAYER Loving God and Father,
I know that I have sinned against you in thought, word and deed.
This Advent season, forgive me, wash away my sins, and make me whole again. Amen

FEAST OF OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE PATRONESS OF THE AMERICAS
December 12
The Feast in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe goes back to the 16th century. A poor Indian named Cuauhtlatohuac was baptized and given the name Juan Diego. He was a 57-year-old widower and lived in a small village near Mexico City. On Saturday morning, December 9, 1531, he was on his way to a nearby barrio to attend Mass in honor of Our Lady.
He was walking by a hill called Tepeyac when he heard beautiful music like the warbling of birds. A radiant cloud appeared and within it stood a young Native American maiden dressed like an Aztec princess. The lady spoke to him in his own language and sent him to the bishop of Mexico, a Franciscan named Juan de Zumarraga. The bishop was to build a chapel in the place where the lady appeared.
The bishop told Juan Diego to have the lady give him a sign. At same time Juan Diego’s uncle became seriously ill and Juan stayed with him to care for him. After two days, with his uncle near death, Juan left his side to find a priest. Juan had to pass Tepayac Hill to get to the priest. As he was passing, he found the lady waiting for him and she assured him that his uncle would recover. She then asked him to go and cut flowers from the top of the hill. Even though the weather was freezing Juan found a full bloom of Castilian roses which the lady asked Juan to carry to the bishop in his tilma - a poncho-like cape made of cactus fiber.
When Juan Diego opened his tilma in the bishop’s presence, the roses fell to the ground and the bishop sank to his knees. On Juan Diego’s tilma appeared an image of Mary exactly as she had appeared at the hill of Tepeyac. It was December 12, 1531.
In 1977, the tilma was examined using infrared photography and digital enhancement techniques. Unlike any painting, the tilma shows no sketching or any sign of outline drawn to permit an artist to produce a painting. Further, the very method used to create the image is still unknown. The image is inexplicable in its longevity and method of production. It can be seen today in a large cathedral built to house up to ten thousand worshipers. It is, by far, the most popular religious pilgrimage site in the Western Hemisphere.

BLESSING OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE
The use of the Christmas tree is relatively modern. Its origins are found in the medieval mystery plays that depicted the tree of paradise and the Christmas light or candle that symbolized Christ, the Light of the world. According to custom, the Christmas tree is set up just before Christmas and may remain in place until the Solemnity of Epiphany. The lights of the tree are illuminated after the prayer of blessing.
The leader says the prayer with hands joined: Lord our God,
we praise you for the light of creation: the sun, the moon, and the stars of the night.
We praise you for the light of Israel: the Law, the prophets, and the wisdom of the
Scriptures. We praise you for Jesus Christ, your Son:
he is Emmanuel, God-with-us, the Prince of Peace, who fills us with the wonder of your love.
Lord God, let your blessing come upon us
as we illumine this tree. May the light and cheer it gives
be a sign of the joy that fills our hearts. May all who delight in this tree
come to the knowledge and joy of salvation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
