Are you interested in becoming Catholic? Do you know someone who may be interested? Baptized or un-baptized, if you have not received the three Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, First Eucharist, Confirmation), you can begin the life-changing journey toward full membership in the Catholic Church by joining the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) program. The RCIA process begins in September 2018 and culminates with full initiation into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil on Saturday, April 20, 2019

For information about the RCIA process, or simply to ask questions call the Parish

Office at 607-273-6121 or visit: http://www.immconch.org/faith-sacraments/rcia-rcic/

Vocabulary

shikamoo = a respectful greeting towards elders marahaba = a response for “shikamoo”. Usiku mwema = good night tafadhali = please Umeankaje? = how was your night? Umeshindaje? = how was your day? Siku njema = have a nice day.

I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on her tombstone from the beginning to the end. He noted that first came the date of her birth and spoke of the following date with tears. But he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those years. For that dash represents all the time that she spent alive on earth and now only those who loved her know what that little line is worth. For it mat-ters not, how much we own; the cars, the house, the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash. So think about this long and hard; are there things you'd like to change? For you never know how much time is left that can still be rearranged. If we could just slow down enough to consider what's true and real. And always try to understand the way other people feel. And be less quick to anger and show appreciation more. And love the people in our lives like we've never loved before. If we treat each other with respect and more often wear a smile. Remembering that this special dash might only last a little while. So when your eulogy is being read with your life's actions to rehash. Would you be proud of the things they say about how you spent your dash? (The Dash by Linda Evans) So, what do you want your life to say to others? How does that reflect the presence of Christ in your life?

Parish Directory

“Lifetouch,” who has taken over from the former Olan Mills Portrait Studio, will be working with us on a new Parish Directory. The last time we had a directory print-ed was in 2011, so it is high time for us to do an update!

Our portrait sessions are now scheduled for Friday, Au-gust 17th &Saturday, August 18th AND Friday, Sep-tember 7th & Saturday, September 8th. We hope this fits for families having college age children, before they head off to school.

Visit our church website for a link to the scheduling page and select your own appointment time. Volunteers are needed to assist with session scheduling after Masses the end of this month, and during the photography sessions! Please contact Erika at 273-6121 if you can help.

The Immaculate Conception Parish picnic is set for Sun-day, August 12, 2018 at the Cass Park Pavilion from Noon to around 4 PM.

This will be a dish to pass picnic lunch with the parish providing hot dogs and drinks, so mark your calendars for this social event.

We will need volunteers to help plan and set up and clean up on the day of the picnic. Keep watching the bulletin for further information.

Finance Council Update: June 30, 2018 was the end of the fiscal year for the parish. While the final numbers are not ready, I thought I would give a short report on parish finances and activities: 1) For the past 11 (months through May 31, 2018 ) the parish had about $550,000 in revenue,

mostly from collections ( $464,000 ) , the remainder from rental income, bulletin ads and other miscellaneous sources. Our operating expenses were about $580,000 spread out over salaries, benefits, insurance, utilities, maintenance, and other normal items. We were fortunate that the CMA goal was met so we did not have to make up any difference with the diocese. (I will give a little background into the diocesan calculation of our CMA assessment later this summer.) While our income did not meet our expenses, we did receive several nice unrestricted gifts that made up any shortfall and allowed us to pay all our bills on time. 2) As to the school, the parish has hired Steve Lipinski and Associates to manage the sale of our

property. Much progress has been made, some positive zoning changes have happened and shortly they will actively begin working with potential buyers. For clarification, the “campus” we refer to is all the property owned by the parish on the Buffalo and Plain Street site. This

includes the school, the rectory, the rented house next to the rectory and the Catholic Charities building. It is taking a bit longer than we’d like to get this sale underway, but we are now moving ahead. The downside of this process is that the parish has to continue paying basic operating costs to keep the school maintained, heated, secure, etc. but those expenses are being accumulated and will be reimbursed from the eventual sales proceeds. 3) The Cemetery is operating within budget but with a shortfall in revenue caused by a less than expected sale of new grave sites. The Cemetery committee is developing a “marketing strategy “ to be rolled out to all catholic parishes in our area in the coming months. Repairs to the closed Mt. Olivet cemetery are still under review and planning. 4) Plans are still underway to identify and fund some beautification and upgrades to our church. Father Chumo will speak to that activity later in the summer. In conclusion, thanks to all the support of our parish families we are able to keep our head above water and focus on the most important activities of our catholic community here in Ithaca.
