“When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one
place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise
like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which
they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire,
which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they
were all filled with the Holy Spirit…” (Acts 2: 1-4)
Pentecost is the Greek name for the spring harvest festival of
the Israelites, which was going on when the Holy Spirit came.
The disciples were together in Jerusalem after the Resurrection
of Jesus. They were fearful because He was no longer with
them. On that morning, however, there appeared tongues like of
fire, that sat upon each of them. “And they were all filled with
the Holy Spirit…”
Because of the festival, there were large crowds of visitors in
Jerusalem. They had come from many places for the festival
and were speaking many different languages. When the
disciples of Jesus came among them and spoke to them, every
one could understand what was being said. They spoke about
the wonderful works of Jesus and the Good News of the Gospel.
It was then that Peter made a moving speech to the crowds and
many were baptized as new followers of Jesus.
The Third Glorious Mystery of the Rosary is the Descent of the
Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday. Today, we are much like the
disciples that gathered in the Upper Room in isolation. We too
are confused and in some cases in a state of loneliness, fear and
despair. We have been denied the opportunity to celebrate the
Eucharist with our family and friends. The elderly that are
homebound, or in hospitals and nursing homes, are not allowed
contact with loved ones due to the fear of transmitting this
deadly virus to each other.
We cry for the support and gifts of the Holy Spirit to help us
during these trying times, and yet, we may have neglected to
realize that when we were baptized, we were given the gifts of
the Spirit, and then we were sealed by those same spirit in
Confirmation. The Holy Spirit lives in our parishes, our family
and friends and in our homes and nursing centers. Jesus gave
all of us the Holy Spirit to be with us in our daily lives, let us
allow ourselves to be guided and comforted by the Spirit, whose
disciples we are.
The window of light and spiritual wellbeing in our lives comes
from the faith and knowledge that we are not alone. Our Lord is
with us during these challenging times and His Holy Spirit is
there to provide us the comfort, love and compassion we are
crying for. We love all of you and include each of you in our daily prayers. My greatest joy is in serving you at SH and IC as your deacon. I continue to look for ways to connect with you and to be the servant of Christ that God has called me to be. Please pray for me as I continue to pray for you, that one day, we will return to a time of health and prosperity and that when it is God’s plan to call us home, we will all be able to join together as a Family of Faith in the eternal glory of heaven.

Message from Father Atwood!!!
Glory be to God! Archbishop Jackels has announced that
public Masses in the archdiocese will resume starting this
weekend (May 30-31). We are so happy. Having said that,
Sacred Heart and Immaculate Conception will NOT reopen this
weekend. Out of an abundance of caution and for health
reasons, our staff, councils, and parish members need to prepare
for reopening. I want to reopen our parishes for public liturgies
safely and responsibly. The virus is still out there, and we must
be vigilant and prudent.
Please read and follow these principles:
1) Catholics are dispenses from the obligation to attend
Mass until further notice.
2) Certain groups, particularly the sick, elderly, and
immune compromised, are vulnerable. Therefore, we
encourage anyone 65 and older and those with a
significant medical condition to remain home for now.
3) We are continuing to livestream Sunday Mass for all
who wish to stay home.
4) Space in church is going to be LIMITED. We need to
maintain social distancing and provide for an orderly
flow of people in and out of church.
5) There is no gathering before or after Mass. For now the
parish halls are closed for gatherings.
6) We ask all parishioners to purchase masks and be
prepared to wear them in church.
7) There will be no Sign of Peace, Precious Blood,
Offertory Procession, and ministers (except for ushers).
We will need a group of dedicated, well trained ushers
to assist us in the weeks to come. Please be open to our
invitation. We need lots of help because ushers are
going to be quite important
8) Mass times when we open will remain the same. Daily
Mass will not resume for the foreseeable future. We
want to see how Sunday Mass goes for a while.
More information will be coming in the mail. In the meantime,
please take these procedures seriously both for your safety and
the safety of your fellow parishioners.
Mass is going to look and feel different for the foreseeable
future. We are trying to provide the sacraments in a safe and
responsible way. Your cooperation is essential.

Background on the Gospel Reading John 20:19-23 The Season of Easter concludes with today’s celebration, the Feast of Pentecost. On Pentecost we
celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles gathered in the upper room in Jerusalem;
this event marks the beginning of the Church. The story of Pentecost is found in the Acts of the
Apostles, today’s first reading. The account in today’s Gospel, John 20:19-23, also recounts how
Jesus gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to his disciples. Yet the event in John’s Gospel takes place on
Easter Sunday. There is no need to try to reconcile these two accounts. It is enough that we know
that after his death, Jesus fulfilled his promise to send to his disciples a helper, an advocate, who
would enable them to be his witnesses throughout the world.
We already heard today’s Gospel proclaimed on the Second Sunday of Easter this year (Lectionary
Cycle A). That Gospel passage, however, also included the description of Jesus’ appearance to
Thomas. In that context, we were led reflect on belief and unbelief.
In the context of the Feast of Pentecost, John 20:19-23 reminds us about the integral connection
between the gifts of peace and forgiveness and the action of the Holy Spirit. Jesus greets his
disciples with the gift of peace. Jesus then commissions his disciples to continue the work that he
has begun, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” He breathes the Holy Spirit upon the
disciples and sends them to continue his work of reconciliation through the forgiveness of sins.
Jesus’ act of breathing the Holy Spirit mirrors God’s act of breathing life into Adam at the time of
Creation. In fact, both the Greek and Hebrew words for “spirit” can also be translated as “breath.”
This Gospel reminds us that the Church is called to be a reconciling presence in the world. The
reconciling presence of Christ is celebrated in the Church’s sacramental life. In the Sacrament of
Baptism, we are cleansed of sin and become a new creation in Christ. In the Sacrament of Penance,
the Church celebrates the mercy of God through the forgiving of sins. This reconciling presence is
also to be a way of life for Christians. In situations of conflict, we are to be agents of peace and
harmony among people.
