Last Wednesday millions upon millions of Catholics bore the symbol of their Faith upon their foreheads. What exactly did that mean to them and to the millions upon millions who saw those bearing witness to their faith? As we know, those affiliated with institu-tionalized religion is down some 10-14% across the board. We could ponder the “Whys”, we could discuss the evisceration of the family, the absence of God in our schools and public form, the marginalization of religious, the rise of materi-alism and secularism, or the fact that we rarely commit to anything, anything that will cost us without instant gratification. There are vestiges of religion peppered throughout our culture but there are those who desperately want us to go away, forever. They actively seek our demise. First they attack our moral character, they paint all with the same brush as the weakest amongst us. They attack our institutions, our bank accounts, our moral authority, our very existence. Why? Because we still stand for something. We unite: they divide. If you’ve listened to the recent rooster of candi-dates, they all are pro-abortion, -even after birth, they all marginalize the religious majority of this country, one in particular defines what a Christian is and how they should vote, unless that vote is for him. Ashes call us to a humility before our God. Do you sense a humility in our society? Are we humble? Do we acknowledge God as He whom we are called to serve? Do we truly believe that God can fix our brokenness? Do we believe that if we give, we shall receive? Do we take to heart the 10 Commandments that God gave us, or do we still see them as the 10 suggestions? Ashes also remind us that this life is not forever. We will die one day and on that day we will have to see God face-to-face. It is a day of reckoning. A day on which we will have to tell God, not that He doesn’t know, but like Confes-sion, it is our opportunity to hear ourselves, explain how we used the gifts that God has blessed us with. Have we built up the Kingdom of God? Have we served our brothers and sisters? Have we prayed? Have we been faithful to our Sunday obligation? Have we witnessed to our Faith, without the ashes upon our forehead? We shouldn’t need them to tell the world we are Christ’s followers, but maybe we do…

The first Sunday of the season of Lent always includes a Gospel account of the temptation of the Lord Jesus in the desert by the devil. This year, the story is set against the backdrop of the first reading from Genesis, which recounts the very first temptation by the devil. That story is set in a garden of delight. The Gospel story is set in the desert. As believers, we know that temptation comes our way in our own gardens of delight as well as the deserts of our lives. As Lent begins, our attention is drawn to that temp-tation within each of us to become like God—we want control, power, and answers to all of life’s difficult questions. As communities of faith, we are given this season of repentance so that we can join our hearts with others on the difficult journey of conversion. We look to God and to one another for strength against temptation.

First Reading: The man and the woman ate the fruit of the one tree that God had told them to avoid, and their shame overtook them (Genesis 2:7-9; 3:1-7). Psalm: Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned (Psalm 51). Second Reading: Death reigned from Adam to Moses, but now grace and life abound in Christ Jesus (Romans 5:12-19 [12, 17-19]). Gospel: Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit and there he fasted for forty days and forty nights (Matthew 4:1-11).

SACRAMENT OF FIRST RECONCILIATION

Congratulations to our wonderful Second Graders who have received the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the very first time. Please keep them in your prayers that they may always seek comfort and Grace at Mass, and in the Sacraments.

The Good Shepherd has found them all!

STATIONS OF THE CROSS With the arrival of Lent in two weeks, we would like to remind our parishioners that Stations of the Cross will

take place Friday evenings at 7:30PM. Please try to make this a part of your Lenten observance this year. If you’ve fallen into the trap of thinking it is boring, it is not at all.

It is peaceful and solemn, and makes us more fully appreciate how God not only became man, but also

allowed Himself to suffer as terribly as any human being is capable of suffering - for our own salvation.

Don’t Wait Until April! Reports of 2019 donations made to Immaculate Conception Church are available now. If you would like a summary report of the envelope donations you made in the collection plate while at Mass, please email the parish ([email protected]) or call the Rectory (591-7480), and let us know whether you would like to pick it up, receive it by USPS mail, or have it emailed to you.

WeShare 2019 parishioner donation statements have been emailed by LPi to everyone with a valid e-mail address in WeShare. Please remember you can look up your dona-tions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Just log into your account, and click on the “Giving History” tab. From there can a donation year. Your donations will be listed immedi-ately. This is one of the benefits of online donations.

Group Grief Therapy Dwyer and Michael’s Funeral home will be hosting Group Grief Therapy in their lounge on the first Saturday of every month., beginning on Saturday, March 7th from 11AM—12:30PM.
