IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH May 2, 2021

P. Joachim Lepcha

“I am the vine; you are the branches.” (John15:5)

Many of my students have become priests and they keep in contact with me whenever they need some spiritual advice or direction. I quote this particular Gospel of John 15:5 to them and encourage them not to fail the spiritual exercises or duties; it means “Iamthevine;youarethebranches.WhoeverremainsinmeandIinhimwillbearmuchfruits,becausewithoutmeyoucandonothing.” We will be absolutely ineffective without Him; if our pastoral life does not bear fruits; our lives remain empty and dry. If we remain with Jesus, we will bear much fruit, because He is the source of life. Branches cannot survive without remaining connected with the tree. I survived these past twenty- ive years of my priesthood because I tried to keep God’s word continually in my mind and making it the guide of my actions, by maintaining my daily prayer life, by receiving the Sacrament of confession that draw our His grace and mercy for me. By celebrating the Holy Eucharist everyday with prayerful devotion and with preparation, by avoiding all the occasion of sins and yielding to the direction of the Holy Spirit. I show pastoral care to everyone who needs my spiritual and sacramental direction. I show compassion by imitating the compassionate heart of Jesus. There was a time in my life when I had a deep spiritual desert experience; and I fought distraction of the world, and false vanity at the same time. I had failed to remain with Jesus, my human weakness kept me away from Him and I lacked wisdom, zeal, and right discernment in my pastoral life. I experienced a kind of failure. Yes, in times of parish inancial needs I cried to Jesus to deliver us, in times of illness, I beg him for a cure, at times I was angry with God when a trusted friend and staff members, or parishioners betrayed a con idence. I questioned Him, ‘why a dishonest person succeeds when the honest one fails?’ In all of these suffering, life, and death, I failed to understand that I was united to Christ like a branch; and God was pruning me to promote growth in me. He was disciplining me to strengthen my character and faith. The more and more I get older like an old wine, my faith deepens in His love and grace which I receive. The pain of life does not frighten me anymore. We are invited to remain in Christ in bad times and good times then we will enjoy peace and consolation. We learn this lesson from the early Church. “TheChurchwasatpeaceand enjoyed the increased consolation of the HolySpirit.” (Acts 9:3) When we remain with Jesus, we will share inner peace, joy, and love to one another. “Littlechildren, letuslove indeedand in truthandnotmerely talkabout it.” (1 John 3:18) Being part of Jesus is being a part of a loving and caring Christian community, where you ind true joy and bear much fruit. Amen!

In the Gospel today, Jesus says “Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing.” Indeed, by helping the poor we can “bear much fruit” and we find that with Jesus we can do everything.

Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will show that you are indeed a disciple of Jesus, as it will bring your love to those who live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread.

BEARING FRUIT Few of us, even when we meditate on the image of the vine and branches, stop to really think about how God “prunes” us. For some there is the danger of thinking that we are already producing fruit for the kingdom, in deed and truth as John says, perhaps raising a family, being active in our parish, and so on. But even those branches which are bearing fruit, the Gospel tells us, can be pruned to produce still more. Today Saul, freshly “pruned” by his conversion, arrives in Jerusalem and meets resistance. Since he had been persecuting Christians, this was only natural. But even after he is accepted and begins to bear fruit, he meets further adversity, and his letters are filled with many accounts of how his trials “pruned” him to produce greater fruit for the kingdom. Like him, as long as we remain in Christ we will continue to bear fruit and, when the will of the Father determines it is time to prune us, the strength of the true vine must enable us to endure it.
