Summer Food Collection Time Is Here! In response to this, the Social Justice Committee will have our collection of non-perishable food items, toiletries and paper products from July 1-31, 2018. Watch for containers in the back of our churches to deposit your items. The summer collection will benefit the Dyersville Food Pantry. If you have any questions, please call Judy Gansemer at 563-580-0654. Your generosity is appreciated, thank you! Save the Date for Totus Tuus which will be held in our pastorate from July 29-August 3 for 1st-12th graders. What is Totus Tuus “Totally Yours”? Totus Tuus is a summer Catholic youth program dedicated to sharing the Gospel and promoting the Catholic faith through evangelization, catechesis, Christian witness, and Eucharistic worship. Our week-long Parish Summer Catechetical Program and Sum-mer Camps assist parents and parishes in the evangelizing and catechizing of their youth by supplementing the work they are already doing. The methodology, structure, con-tent, and enthusiasm of Totus Tuus is concerned not only with teaching the faith, but also igniting the hearts of the team members and young people. The result has been the formation of young adults who continue to dedicate them-selves to the Church’s mission of evangelization.

Hospice of Dubuque will soon be sponsoring a six-week bereavement support group. It will be open to anyone in the tri-state area who has experienced the loss of a loved one, through death, within the past

twelve months. It is suggested that participants wait at least three months after a loss before attending. The group will meet on Monday evenings, from 6 – 8 pm, beginning July 16 through August 20, at the Hospice of Dubuque office in the Theisen Education Center, 1670 JFK Road. There is no re-quirement to have had a previous connection with Hospice of Dubuque. The sessions are meant to be both educational and emotionally supportive. Group size is limited so pre-registration is required by July 9. Please contact the hospice office at (563) 582-1220 for a registration form. Although there is no fee for the group, a contribution to defray the cost of materials would be appreciated.

Fiscal Year End June 30, 2018: Our pastorate fiscal year end will be on June 30th. The goal for each parish is to have bills

and subsidies paid current so the annual parish financial reports have accurate information in them. We are deeply grateful for all the contributions given throughout the fiscal year to meet these goals. If you were considering a tithing amount and would like to have it included in the 2017/2018 fiscal year, please have the donation to the parish office by noon on Friday, June 29th. Thank you!

Congratulations to Tyler and Becca (Brimeyer)

Barton who were married at the Ss. Peter & Paul Church this weekend!

A MESSAGE FROM FR. DIEHM

Dear Parishioners, This weekend, we celebrate the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. In the Gospel of the Annunciation (see Luke 1:26-38), the archangel Gabriel announces to Mary that her relative, Elizabeth, has also conceived a child (i.e., St. John the Baptist) and that she was already six months into the pregnancy (all of that happened in Luke 1:5-25). In Mary’s visitation to Elizabeth (see Luke 1:39-56) was also the hid-den meeting of Jesus, in Mary’s womb, and St. John the Baptist, in the womb of Elizabeth. This weekend’s gospel reading (Luke 1:5-17) gives us the archangel Gabriel’s announcement of the conception of St. John the Baptist through the natural marital relations of the priest Zechariah with his wife, Elizabeth. It was a miraculous conception, since they apparently struggled with fertility and were both advanced in years; yet it was still natural, since God acted through the natural marital relations of Zechariah and Elizabeth. St. John the Baptist is an interesting figure in the Bible: He stands simultaneously at the end of the era of the law and the prophets, and the beginning of the era of Christ. He is the forerunner of the Lord, the one whom God called to go before Christ the Lord, in order to prepare the people for His appearance. As proclaimed by the archangel Gabriel, he is also the fulfillment of the prophecy about the return of Elijah the prophet (see Luke 1:17 and Malachi 3:23, after Elijah was taken into heaven in 2 Kings 2:11). Christians now take up the role that St. John the Baptist once filled. We are called to be prophets who go before the Lord and prepare the way for His com-ing again in glory. We are called to be prophets, not of doom, but of hope, promise, and fulfillment – prophets of the will of God yet to be fulfilled. Let’s pray that we might always be witnesses, in both word and deed, to the hope we have in Jesus and His glorious second coming. God bless, Fr. Diehm

La Salle Catholic School Updates

Preschool Play Dates: Come and join us for a preschool-age play time! We’ll have two opportu-nities for children and parents to get to know each

other. Join us on Wednesday, July 11 between 9:00-11:00 and/or on Monday, August 6 between 3:00-5:00 on the school playground. Adults can bring a lawn chair or blanket and can visit with other parents as we watch the children play. We’ll have a cool drink and a treat. Does your preschooler have older siblings? They are welcome to come, too. There will not be a program or specific activi-ty—just a low-key opportunity for children and parents to play and talk together. School Cleaning: We have two school work nights sched-uled for summer cleaning and preparation for the new school year. We would appreciate your help on July 25 and August 1 from 6:00-8:00 pm. As these dates get closer we’ll share more information. 2018-19 School Calendar: Registration for the 2018-19 school year will be held between 10:00 am and 7:00 pm on August 7. The Back-to-School Open House will be from 6:00-7:30 on August 21. Miss Ambrosy will be mak-ing the preschool program home visits during the week of August 20. The first day of school for kindergarten through sixth grade is August 23 with a two-hour early out. Children in four-year-old preschool will start on August 27 and children in three-year-old preschool will begin on August 31.

Prophets of a Future Not our Own Written by Fr. Ken Untener (1979). It helps, now and then, to step back and take a long view. The kingdom is not only beyond our efforts, it is even beyond our vision. We accomplish in our lifetime only a tiny fraction of the magnificent enterprise that is God's work. Nothing we do is complete, which is a way of saying that the Kingdom al-ways lies beyond us. No statement says all that could be said. No prayer fully expresses our faith. No confession brings perfection. No pastoral visit brings wholeness. No program accomplishes the Church's mission. No set of goals and objectives includes everything. This is what we are about. We plant the seeds that one day will grow. We water seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future prom-ise. We lay foundations that will need further develop-ment. We provide yeast that produces far beyond our capabil-ities. We cannot do everything, and there is a sense of libera-tion in realizing that. This enables us to do something, and to do it very well. It may be incomplete, but it is a beginning, a step along the way, an opportunity for the Lord's grace to en-ter and do the rest. We may never see the end results, but that is the difference between the master builder and the work-er. We are workers, not master builders; ministers, not messi-

ahs. We are prophets of a future not our own.

Cemetery Upkeep Collection Envelope: The ceme-tery upkeep collection envelope, included in the enve-lope packets, has been added to help offset expenses that the cemeteries incur from expenses such as lawn mowing and snow removal. The only other source of

income for our cemeteries is the sale of lots sold throughout the year. If you are interested in helping to cover some of these cem-etery expenses you may use the envelope provided in your pack-et or if using another envelope please mark it “Cemetery Up-

keep” along with your name for the recording of donation purposes. Thank you!
