The Never Ending Tunnel

Please read (and listen to) the Story Starter again, brainstorm as many ideas and thoughts as you can, including your best sentences and answers from last week. There is a task sheet for this on our website, but you can use any paper you like!

Time to get creative….The story you write is going to continue on from the story starter - you should know this really well by now. Look carefully at your work from last week, your ideas, your thoughts and your new brainstorm. Pick out the best combination that you can use to create an exciting piece of writing.

This is the hardest stage for me to guide you through as I can’t see what you’ve done, and everyone will be different! So, on the next slide there is a planning mountain instead! The opening is already done - you don’t need to do that part - but you do now have to note down your ideas and then create a text map for the rest of your story from the mountain planner.

Now step your story out, say it out loud to a family member, your pet or a stuffed toy..make sure it works but don’t actually write it yet - just tell it and add bits to your text map or take them away as you go. Think carefully about the mood of your story, and how you want to build up to a strong ending.

5 Ending

● Include your ideas, sentences and answers from last week in your plan.

● Include adventurous vocabulary (including Y5/6 words) to create the atmosphere or mood that you want.

● Include different openers for variation.

● Be subtle, build up the action, don’t go for the obvious.

Your story will be a minimum of 4 paragraphs each containing a minimum of 6 sentences. Make sure you use the text features throughout - these will act as your checklist/writing criteria. They are on the next slide and also on a document on the website if it helps to tick them off.

Now it’s time to write your own story of The Never Ending Tunnel...

As you are continuing on from the story starter, there is no need to write it out, use the sheet or just continue on from ‘She bravely took a step forward...’

If you wish, you could write your story on a scroll, illustrate it and roll it up to make a tunnel!

You will find your daily Maths Skills practise on Mathletics this week. Whether you are in Year 5 or Year 6, the tasks involve estimation, addition and subtraction. Have fun!

Hey there pals, we’re working on converting units of measure this week...

First, this MyMaths lesson, followed by the online homework and a paper task* or two depending on what you feel you need...

….and then this MyMaths lesson followed by the online homework and paper tasks* (again one or two depending on what you feel you need!

* There are quite a few paper tasks. As a minimum, please pick one for each metric unit, and take your time, going back over MyMaths if you need to.

First, find the BBC home learning tasks* to recap (including the quiz and worksheets)...

...followed by this MyMaths ‘Conversion Graphs’ lesson and online homework.

* Please do the Y5 lessons after the BBC lesson if you would like more practise of converting metric units. The Y6 lesson looks at other units, so you need to be confident with the concept of converting to do this.

Time to get your bake on using Miss Kearvell’s favourite recipe! We’re not making it easy though..to begin, convert these units into grams, teaspoons and millilitres (think carefully about which ingredient should be which).

Muffin Mix (makes 8 big ‘uns)0.195 kg of plain flour5 ¼ ounces of sugar 1.25g of fine salt0.01kg of baking powder8 decilitres of oil1 chicken orb0.08 litres-0.120 litres of milk7.5 ml vanilla essence6 ounces of fruit pieces of your own choice

Extra info. if needed:Ounces to grams=Mass x 28.351 teaspoon = 5g

The method is on the next slide btw..

Please follow these instructions to make your muffins (there is also a copy to download on our website). Let us know which fruit pieces you used, and remember to send a pic before you eat them all!

Time for Science… Can you remember the requirements ofplants for life and growth?Using the plants in your locality, conduct an investigation or experiment (or find evidence) to prove you are correct… Take photos and write an explanation.

Undertaking this work means you are working scientifically and focussing on this objective: Draw conclusions based on their data and observations, use evidence to justify their ideas, and use their scientific knowledge and and understanding to explain their findings. Please make sure your ideas, pictures and explanations all meet this criteria.

The intention of this week’s Plant Investigation is to get your enquiring and questioning mind working in readiness for a project you will be undertaking

If you want to start thinking about it now, have a look at this:

https://scienceoxford.com/big-science-event-at-home/

OK, so by now you should be pretty expert in all things local! You know how the area is defined, you know about the human and physical landuses. You basically now know the features and characteristics of our locality. It’s time to collate all the information you have gathered and use it to identify those features which may appeal to others who live elsewhere...

No, I’m not going crazy, being back at school hasn’t driven me insane just yet….that last slide is meant to be there! Don’t you think it’s great? It was written on the box of a pair of trainers I bought last year. I kept it because I loved it - if anything could make me get up and go, it’s reading that.

So, here’s the plan. I’d like you to copy the IDEA but REWRITE it using the best facts and findings you have discovered about our local area in the past few weeks. Make ‘others who live elsewhere’ aware of the unique and special features in this area, but be very clever, you’re going to have to really think about what you pick and how you write it. That writing on the box works because it uses very specific words, put together in a very specific way to create short tag lines, but it’s also motivational and informative. You need to create the same effect, but with our locality as your focus.

Once complete, think about how you are going to present the finished piece in a way that fits the area. I’m really looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

OOOO, I wonder what everyone will do….

Me too!

Let’s make a like a dog and flea...
