Since inception the objective of this committee has been to generate awareness about Performance Excellence. Shri Ramkrishna Bajaj was President of IMC during 1979-80. It is with pleasure that we recall the role of Shri Ramkrishna Bajaj as a business leader. He was a crusader for ethics in business, social welfare and consumer protection. He established the Council for Fair Business Practices to facilitate his crusade. He believed in Customer-driven quality. It was therefore appropriate that the IMC Quality Award was christened after one of the most trustworthy captains of Indian Industry. Without a foundation in place, these organizations get rapidly disillusioned. They tend to make their mistakes faster and more consistently! Building a foundation for Performance Excellence involves focusing on numerous core values that underlie the IMC Ramkrishna Bajaj National Quality Award (IMC RBNQA) criteria. According to me, the significant ones for accelerated transformation of an organization in the current turbulent environment are: Visionary Leadership, Customer-Driven Excellence,Valuing Workforce, and Managing for Innovation. We have learnt from past applicants and particularly celebrated ones that Quality & Excellence initiatives are not fully delegable. Leadership must embrace the transformation process using the IMC RBNQA model. We have also learnt that Quality is not only about industry standards. It is about proactive laser sharp customer focus. Finally, we have learnt that the workforce is the only appreciating asset in an organization and our IMC RBNQA applicants firmly recognize this. They also believe that, unfortunately, the left-brain knowledge resident in the workforce is the most under- employed asset of their organization. Further, they understand that their workforce is capable of right-brain innovative thinking - an asset seldom used in industry. By addressing these four core values upfront, the journey to Performance Excellence can be a smooth desert ride. The challenges will not be over powering. Niraj Bajaj, Chairman, IMC Ramkrishna Bajaj National Quality Award Trust Try Existing A Day Without A Customer Being committed to a customer is probably the most critical strategy for any organization to survive in a turbulent global environment. The IMC Ramkrishna Bajaj National Quality Award (IMC RBNQA) criteria emphasizes precisely this dimension for success. This is in keeping with Shri Ramkrishna Bajaj’s mission of consumer protection. A Gandhian mission. Over the years, purchasing practices of customers have matured considerably. In fact, purchase departments have realized that they need to conduct themselves as world-class customers. This is a paradigm shift. They no longer focus on lowest cost products and services from suppliers; they focus on process capabilities of suppliers and assess life-cycle-costing. The IMC RBNQA model encourages organizations to realize the same. To become committed to customers, organizations need to understand customer needs (stated and unstated); design product and service features that will delight customers; build flexible and agile processes capable of creating the designed products and services; and educate the customers on ‘fitness for use’ for the deliverables. The most expensive costs for an organization relate to dissatisfied or lost customers. Yes, IMC RBNQA is about such core values. Our IMC RBNQA mission is to encourage organizations in manufacturing, service, healthcare and education sectors to adopt the model. We urge you to take the first step. Size does not matter. The process of understanding the criteria; writing an application; being examined through a robust methodology; and receiving a feedback report can prove invaluable. We shall be pleased to catalyze 2013 as a path breaking year for your organization.
