refleX (dslr) CamerasThe larger size of DSLR cameras (combined with their manual controls) can sometimes intimidate shoppers, but in reality they can be just as easy to use as your compact digital camera. Most DSLRs have full auto and scene modes just like compact’s do. The difference is in how you use those settings, and the quality of photos a DSLR can deliver. With DSLR’s you gain faster shutter speeds and a larger camera sensor than with a compact digital camera. Additional lenses and accessory options you choose will enhance your photography experience.

DeFINING YOur DsLr PhOTOGrAPhY sTYLe – WhY DsLr? DSLRs are the chameleons of the camera world. Infinitely changeable – offering you total control by adding different lenses, stronger flashes, better filters, etc. This versatility delivers incredible pictures at any level of experience. Before digging into the specs of any DSLR, ask yourself what will you be using your camera for the most:

• Shooting events, portraits, landscapes?

• Shooting fast-moving subjects?

• Shooting subjects in different lighting conditions?

DePTh OF FIeLD Depth of field (DOF) helps define what is or isn’t focused in your photo based on the aperture setting of your DSLR. A low aperture setting (e.g., F5.6) will focus primarily on your subject and less on the background, causing a blurry background effect. A higher aperture setting (e.g., F17.1) will keep more elements of the photo in focus – if that is your goal. All cameras have depth of field, but what is unique about a DSLR is the ability to control how you use it, allowing again for maximum control of your experience. If you are just a beginner, your auto and scene modes will help adjust this for you, so you can learn as you go.

The NeeD FOr sPeeD Control of your shutter speed allows for greater flexibility in capturing action in your photographs. High shutter speeds (e.g., 1/1600) allow you to freeze fast-moving action. By holding down your shutter release, you can capture multiple images in burst mode. This is an essential feature for sports and action photography. Low shutter speeds (e.g., 1/2) are great for images that may take some time to develop, like fireworks or running water. Whatever your situation, you can adjust your camera to take the perfect picture. Make sure to use a high-speed memory card to ensure that your DSLR can achieve its optimal performance at any shutter setting.

CIrCuLAr POLArIZer: Great for landscape photos. Intensifies color saturation in bright sunlight while eliminating reflection from nonmetallic surfaces.

8-POINT sTAr FILTer: Turn the ordinary shot into an extraordinary one – transform every point of light in the frame into a multicolored star.

NeuTrAL DeNsITY: Provides more flexibility and control of aperture and exposure while shooting in bright light conditions.

TrIPODs A versatile tripod should be in every photographer’s toolbox. Some things to consider when choosing your tripod:

heIGhT: How does the tripod extend? What are its maximum, minimum and folded heights? And most importantly, do the heights fit you? This can really vary depending on the type of photographs you take.

sTABILITY: Always check the stability of the tripod when the legs are fully extended. Adjust the tripod to a proper height and then check if it wobbles – if stable, it should remain firmly in place even with weight on it.

WeIGhT: Make sure that the tripod can carry the total load it is supporting. When looking at the weight of the actual tripod, don’t be fooled, as heavier doesn’t equal stronger. Carbon Fiber is actually the strongest material despite being incredibly lightweight; it’s also why those tripods are more expensive.

TrIPOD heADs: Heads tend to come in two categories – pan and tilt heads and ball and socket heads. Pan and tilt heads move up and down, left to right. Ball and socket heads allow you to position the camera in any direction.

DsLr FLAshesAny photographer will tell you that light is the most important component of a great picture. An external DSLR flash allows you to add light in situations where you may not have enough, or alter the existing light you already have. Entry-level external flashes help to enhance your built-in flash and higher-end flashes allow you to operate remotely from the menu screen on your DSLR camera.

Here are some examples of when you may want to use an external flash:

• To minimize shadows and enhance natural skin tones for professional-looking portraits.

• For the added ability to “bounce” light from all angles – producing even lighting across your photo.

• To dramatically reduce the chances for red eye in photos.

DsLr FILTers It is always a good idea to have a selection of photographic filters in your camera bag, be it a polarizer, a diffusion filter or just a UV filter to protect your lens. There are lots of different filters on the market that produce special effects. The filters listed below are good for experimenting with some combinations for your shots.

Is part of a family of techniques used to increase the stability of an image. However, it's important to note that image stabilization does not prevent motion blur caused by the movement of the subject or by extreme movements of the camera. OIS is only capable of reducing blur that results from normal, minute shaking of a lens due to handheld shooting. Quality becomes a key factor in the way your shots look when shooting video without a tripod, so choosing a camcorder that offers this technology can be an advantage.

GeOTAGGING

Geotagging is the process of adding geographical identification metadata to photographs, video or websites. Geotagging can help users find a wide variety of location-specific information, and the built-in GPS receiver makes this feature an ideal choice for travelers. A Geotagging GPS receiver gives you the ability to view your current location on the LCD map display, as well as “tag” your shooting locations. Tagged videos and still images can be reviewed and played back using the Map Index function on the camcorder.

Standard SD card capacity maxes at 2GB. seCure DIGITAL hIGh CAPACITY (sDhC): Is an extension of the SD standard, which increases storage capacity up to 32GB. SDhC cards are the same physical size as SD cards, but are not backwards compatible with older SD devices.

MeMOrY sTICK, MeMOrY sTICK PrO AND MeMOrY sTICK PrO DuO: Are memory cards exclusive to Sony products – which include cameras, camcorders, laptops, Playstation and PSP in addition to others.

xD PICTure CArD: Olympus and Fujifilm developed the xD for use in their line of cameras. This format is now used exclusively in Olympus cameras.

MICrOsD/MICrOsDhC: Is physically the smallest memory card on the market today. This format is most commonly used in cell phones and also in select Olympus cameras via an xD adapter.

DsLr MeMOrYCOMPACTFLAsh (CF): The CF card is the standard for high-end DSLR cameras. Because of DSLRs’ faster shooting capability (burst mode), you should look for high-speed CF cards to ensure top performance.

seCure DIGITAL hIGh CAPACITY (sDhC): This format (explained above) is also used in many of today’s newer DSLRs. To achieve maximum performance from your DSLR, use a high-speed SDHC card.

CAMCOrDer MeMOrYseCure DIGITAL hIGh CAPACITY (sDhC): For capturing video, it is important to note the SDHC class rating as indicated on your camera or camcorder. For standard definition recording, you will minimally need a class 2 rated card. For high definition recording, you will need a class 4 or higher rated card. Refer to your hardware device’s owner’s manual for its specific class requirement. The chart on the next page shows the class rating logos that you will look for to match compatibility of your hardware with your memory. MeMOrY sTICK, MeMOrY sTICK PrO AND MeMOrY sTICK PrO DuO: Also used for video recording. This format is used exclusively with Sony’s handycam camcorders.

MeMOrY CArDs While there are many kinds of memory cards on the market, most cameras are designed to use only one type – with a few having the option of using two different formats via dual card slots. It is important to understand which type of memory card is the right type for your camera. If your camera did not come with a memory card, consult your owner’s manual to be sure you purchase the right type.

AuTO FOCus: A feature that allows you to obtain clear focus on a subject, instead of requiring manual adjustment so you can get the best picture without any blurring.

BursT MODe: Also referred to as continuous shooting, burst mode captures multiple shots in rapid succession with a single click of the shutter.

CCD Or CMOs seNsOr: A sensor is the heart of a digital camera that records an image when you take a picture or capture video. The size of a sensor has a strong influence on its ability to detect and record light accurately. Larger sensors like those found in DSLRs allow you to capture better images in low light and more color detail overall. DIGITAL ZOOM: This is not true zoom as it is merely simulated by enlarging the existing image’s pixels by cropping. The actual length of the lens does not change. Digital zooming does result in reduced image quality and should generally be avoided or turned off on your camera altogether.

FACe DeTeCTION: Face detection tracks faces within the frame and automatically focuses and optimizes exposure for sharp, brilliant portrait pictures.

FrAMes Per seCOND (Or FrAMe rATe): A frame equivalent to a single photograph, so the frames per second is the number of photos that can be captured by the camera in one second of time. The higher the number, the more photos you can capture in one second. F-sTOP (Or DePTh OF FIeLD): The measurement of the aperture setting (the “eye” of the camera) in a lens. Like a human’s pupil, the f-stop setting determines how much light is allowed to enter the lens and pass through to the film (analog) or CCD or CMOS sensor (digital). It also determines how much in front of and behind the subject is in focus. For example, a shallow depth of field (lower f-stop number) will result in your subject being in focus while the background is blurred.

GIGABYTe (GB): A measure of memory capacity. The higher GB, the more storage.

IsO: Measures the sensitivity to light. Higher ISO settings allow for better low-light photos. Lower ISO settings are great for outdoor situations.

LCD DIsPLAY: Full-color display found on a digital camera or camcorder that lets you view and review your digital pictures and videos when they are taken.

MeGAPIxeL: The more pixels that exist in an image the higher the resolution and therefore the greater the quality of the image. The number of megapixels is only one aspect relating to the quality of a camera, or the actual quality of a photo it is capable of producing. Factors such as camera sensor and the optical quality of a lens play equally important roles.

OPTICAL IMAGe sTABILIZATION: Optical image stabilization minimizes blurring caused by camera shake or subject movement.

OPTICAL ZOOM: This is your lens’ true zoom capability. The lens does the work by reducing or enlarging the field of view. The greater the optical zoom, the closer you can get to the subject you are shooting.

sCeNe MODes: Pre-programmed settings on your camera that help automatically achieve the best photo given the current shooting conditions. Some examples include: Portrait, landscape, sports, night and many more found on most digital cameras today.

sMILe DeTeCTION: The camera will lock onto the subject’s face and automatically trigger image capture when a smile is detected.
