UC Chapter of Rad Aid Holds Holiday Drive Supporting Freestore for the Third YearFor the third year, the UC Radiology chapter of Rad Aid conducted a holiday food drive in December to support the Freestore Foodbank. Rad Aid is an international organization of Radiology residents which is primarily focused on providing radiology hardware and services to underserved populations around the world, but in 2018 the local chapter began sponsoring a holiday food drive, with canned goods going to Cincinnati’s Freestore Foodbank. Each imaging section had its own collection points, with a pizza party promised to the section that collected the most. That year they collected over 800 cans.

In 2020, with the Freestore experiencing its greatest demand ever and many Radiology employees working from home, the food drive also accepted cash donations for the first time. The drive netted about 425 canned items and $2300 cash. Cardiopulmonary Imaging topped Interventional Radiology

for donations. Senior Resident Arafat Ali commented, “There was such a good spirited rivalry between Cardiopulmonary and IR, each section one-upping the other every time an update was sent out. Beyond that, my hope is to inspire others to do the same and to pass it forward, teach their children the importance of helping others in need.  A way to

reinforce our own personal values by improving the lives of others, even in such a small way of donating a few cans of food.”

Department Chair Mary Mahoney, MD added, “We wanted to make our food drive even bigger this year knowing the need is even greater. This is an annual event run by our residents, and I am very proud to see the

energy and enthusiasm they bring to it.” n

UC Radiologists Named Among Cincinnati’s ‘Best Doctors’

Verma on Faculty PanelOn October 8, Sadhna Verma, MD joined an online faculty panel for UC College of Medicine faculty and staff, titled Faculty Stories: Decreasing the Stigma of Burnout. Moderated by Jennifer Molano, MD, Chair of the UCCOM Faculty Wellness Advisory Council and UCMC GME Wellbeing Committee, Dr. Verma joined Drs. Mike Holliday, Caroline Lee, and Toral Shah in discussing their experiences with workplace burnout and ways of adapting to it. n

UC Health AppointmentsBecky Allen, MS, was promoted to Assistant Vice President, Operations, of UC Health in November, 2020. She will continue as Enterprise Director of Radiology for UC Health, where she has been for the past five years.

Blake McCormick has been appointed Radiology Director of UCMC. He has been Business Manager and Interim Director of radiology, and most recently has been with the UC Department of Surgery. n

As we start a new year, I am conscious that the world has changed in ways we could never have predicted. This past year has brought unprecedented challenges to radiologists and to the entire health care system. It has been a crash course in adaptability.

The impact of COVID-19 has been far reaching, affecting us in every aspect of our personal and professional lives. Our lives are different, the way we work is different, and even our thinking has been changed by all that we have witnessed. It is critically important that we look back and learn from the experiences of the past year. It has brought the issue of health disparities to the forefront. It has highlighted the inefficiencies in our practices, but there were also bright spots.

The way our department came together to address the pandemic was inspiring.

Multiple examples of creative problem solving emerged during the worst of the pandemic. The near instantaneous pivot to a virtual environment for educating our learners and managing the day to day operations

of our teams was impressive. It will be essential to continue expanding the capabilities of our technology — whether in terms of innovative teaching methods or increased efficiencies in our department workflows.

So as we approach the one year anniversary of the pandemic in our lives, I am hopeful that 2021 will be a better year — that we will have learned from the past year and will be better, stronger, and smarter in this new year. n

Dr. Mahoney said, “I am honored to be part of an organization that actively supports women in radiology and works to promote diversity and inclusivity in its leadership, in its committees and in its programming,” Mahoney says. “We must ensure that our academic and society leaders reflect the diverse community we represent and strive to provide an equitable and inclusive community that serves the needs of all of our members. In shedding unconscious bias and embrac ing d i f ferent perspectives, we strengthen our specialty and enhance the quality of care we provide to our patients.”

• Achala Vagal, MD received an RSNA Honored Educator Award.

• Andrew Pavlina, MD received a Roentgen Resident/Fellow Research Award.

• Seven presentations by UC residents, fellows and faculty received awards, as noted in the citations. n

Online Recruiting EventThe pandemic has created some obstacles for residency recruiting, since candidates are unable to visit us in person. Interviews for the next class of residents were conducted by Zoom meetings during two weeks in November and December. Residency Coordinator Rose Alden

organized the applicants into rooms on Zoom, and shepherded them through meetings with faculty and r e s i d e n t

interviewers, and the daily faculty lecture.

Looking forward, the Radiology Residency Program held an online recruiting event on October 19. Program Director

Eric England hosted one of the “Pint Night with the PD” events that the program holds periodically, this time at Moerlein Lager

House — observing social distancing due to the pandemic. In addition to the usual snacks, beer and conversation at a local watering hole, this Pint Night was also a virtual open house for prospective residents. A link was sent to Residency recruits so they could join in and address questions about the program and life in Cincinnati to the current residents, along with Dr. England and Associate Program Directors Alisa Kanfi and Juliana Tobler. The Interventional and Neuroradiology sections have also held virtual events to share information about their programs. n

Mobile Stroke Unit DebutsUC Health’s new Mobile Stroke Unit entered service August 11. A fully equipped ambulance, it is further tailored to assist stroke patients with a CT scanner, and will be staffed with a UC Health Mobile Care paramedic, an EMT, an RN trained in critical care and a CT technologist, and the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Stroke Team physicians will respond via telemedicine. With the MSU, treatment can begin even before the patient arrives at the hospital. n

You go to work as usual after being named President of RSNA. On Dr. Mary Mahoney’s first day back

at Mammography Screening, residents Dan Dressler, Jimmy Roebker and Tyler McCurdy decided to

welcome her wearing jackets and ties as a show of respect. n

Our 2020 FellowsThe physicians who completed Radiology fellowships at UC in 2020 have gone on to the following:

Breast Center Reaccredited ‘Center of Excellence’ for Eighth Year in a RowIn 2021, the University of Cincinnati Cancer Center’s Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center has been reaccredited for the eighth consecutive year as a “Certified Quality Breast Center of Excellence” in the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers (NQMBC) Program —the highest distinction for excellence given by the NQMBC. The center has held this designation since 2013, and

remains the only program in the region and one of only 16 nationally named a “Center of Excellence” in the Comprehensive Category. It also is the only program in the region and State of Ohio to earn a triple accreditation distinction from the American College of Radiology, the American College of Surgeons National Accreditation for Breast Programs and the NQMBC.

NQMBC is under the umbrella

In response to her request for photos of the cities where attendees were participating in RSNA 2020, Mary Mahoney, MD, RSNA president for 2021, received an outpouring of images.

• Mary Mahoney, MD, FACR, Benjamin Felson Endowed Chair and Professor of Radiology, was named President of RSNA for 2021. Dr. Mahoney is the first UC Radiologist to serve as president of RSNA.

NQMBC is under the umbrella

of the National Consortium of Breast Centers, aimed at increasing the quality of breast health care provided by professionals to their patients, with 119 centers participating nationwide in the NQMBC program.

With the MSU, treatment can begin even before the patient arrives at the hospital. n

So as we approach the one year anniversary of the pandemic in our lives, I am hopeful that 2021 will be a better year — that we will have learned from the past year and will be better, stronger, and smarter in this new year. n
