Based on Pinnacle’s custom chip called “HUB3video processor”, the T3K is the first 64-bit PCIsystem for video production, allowing for unmatcheddata transfer speeds between the T3K and the disksub-system or host.

The unique “memory-centric” architecture of theHUB3 chip represents a dramatic advance over the“stream-centric” architecture of other video boards.Much like traditional video switchers, stream-centricsystems rely on dedicated signal pipelines that areconnected by an internal mixer. Processors andpathways have specified functions, and theirresources are only available to perform singular dedicated operations.

In contrast, the HUB3 architecture delivers thepower and flexibility of a unique processing enginethat operates several times faster than real-time, at1.5 GB/second memory transfer speed. The HUB3processor stores images in its extensive memory,allowing the chip to perform multiple real-timeprocessing operations. With no fixed pipelines, theHUB3 can freely work with any image size and format – compressed or uncompressed, 4:3 or 16:9,and YUV or RGB. The full resources of the HUB3chip can be simultaneously directed at complexoperations, and multiple operations can be performedin faster than real-time. For composited images thatrequire more than eight streams, real-time operationand playback scale down gracefully, allowing eventhe most complex multi-layer composites to beviewed in motion.

For uncompressed compositing of more than eightlayers, Instant Compositing accelerates rendering andallows for speedy creation of multi-layer images. As additional layers are added, the system’s playbackrate adjusts gracefully down to lower frame rates. A 16-layer image, for example, may play at a rate of10 frames per second. Even the most complex com-posites can be previewed in motion, not just oneframe at a time.
