Haywood Holder, Ed.D President, Board of Directors

Imagine every childgot a chance to go to preschool. Not just any preschool... one of the best child development centers in the nation. And no matter how much money their parents made, or how on-track their development was, they were given access to this life-shaping experience.

That’s what our founders—the City of Hampton and nine downtown churches—imagined back in 1971, and our center was born. Just as a child gets bigger and stronger with time, so has our innovative program. We’ve maintained our sliding-scale tuition rate, so parents can afford to work or attend school, but also made major advances—like becoming the first nationally accredited (NAEYC) center on the Peninsula.

This report gives you a small taste of the big difference we are making every day, for every child here... all because you, the community, helped make Downtown Hampton Child Development Center more successful than anyone ever imagined.

Thank you for your continued support!

Our mission is to nurture young children by providing affordable, quality preschool programs that develop the “whole child” and foster school readiness.

What Makes DHCDC Unique• Provides the Peninsula’s only sliding-scale tuition rate,

where families pay based on income and need

• Employs only degreed, experienced teachers

• Offers a strong academic program focused on school readiness

• Teaches using hands-on learning activities

• Serves 200 local children, ages 6 weeks to 5 years, in a full-day, year-round program

• Offers the Peninsula’s only full-day, year-round preschool inclusion program for children with special needs

• Rated 4 stars by the state (Virginia Star Quality Initiative)

• Was first program on the Peninsula to be nationally accredited (NAEYC)

“DHCDC is a better choice compared to other child care/preschools because they have a great staff, wonderful teachers, detailed curriculum, and are affordable. “ – Brogan’s mom

“I am a single parent of a 4-year-old boy. It is hard having to take care of my son with no father figure in the household, but due to the tuition rate I am able to send him to school on my own without aid. “ – Hendrix’s mom

“DHCDC’s sliding-scale tuition rate allowed me to participate with the classroom more by

supplying things that I might have not been able to do otherwise.” – Demarco’s mom

“If DHCDC did not exist, then my child would probably not be in preschool right now and not be ready for kindergarten. DHCDC has improved her social skills and learning knowledge greatly.”

– Amaya’s mom

“I am a single parent of two. Their father is sick with cancer. The sliding-scale tuition rate

allowed me to pay my bills.” – Trio’s mom

Members of Waters Edge Church spent an afternoon sanitizing toys and surfaces in our classrooms, plus cleaning off our cluttered stage, during their congregation’s annual “Love Week” in March.

As part of their Earth Day project in April, this community-minded company planted trees, pruned overgrown shrubs and mulched all the flower beds at our facility.

More than 15 representatives from the Fire and Rescue next door to our center engaged the children with interactive discussions about fire safety and procedures in May 2013. Each child also received a toy fire helmet.

Extra thanks to all who volunteered anonymously or as part of a group listed!

The best volunteers we could ever imagine!

The average DHCDC parent pays $3,000 per year on the sliding scale. The actual cost

to DHCDC for each child is over $7,000 per year.

Our grounds never looked so good, thanks to hard-working volunteers from Sentara Healthcare who came to landscape and prune our playground as part of United Way Day of Caring in September.

In February, Girl Scout Nina Robertson taught drawing techniques to our 4-year-olds, as well as giving them homemade crayons and art books to keep, to earn her Silver Award.

Tony Reyes, active on our Board of Directors, and his wife Corean graciously opened up their Fort Monroe home once again for our annual October reception to thank our most generous supporters.

Hampton Mayor George Wallace read “The Grumpy Morning” (and made some realistic quacks!) to our children in January, as part of the Mayors’ Book Club. Each child received their own copy of the book.

Commander Phillip Brown, USN, visited our center in November to read to the children and answer their questions about being a pilot.

Members of the Women’s Club of Hampton and the Downtown Hampton Exchange Club each hosted a parent reception after our two days of holiday musicals performed by the children.

Imagine all the people...

More than 400 supporters attended our annual Breakfast to Benefit the Children on April 1 at the Hampton Roads Convention Center, raising over $100,000. Shown above is Cathy Lewis of WHRV-FM’s “HearSay,” giving the keynote address. Below is Louis Morris of Old Point National Bank, which sponsored the event, congratulating the children who sang that morning from Mrs. Brylewski and Mrs. Clark’s class.

DHCDC Program Director Vondella Gregory (right) welcomes employees from C&F Bank as they deliver holiday gifts for 10 families at our center.

With the estimated return nearly $17 for every $1 spent on quality early education for “at risk” preschoolers, our children are a smart investment.

Because of you, they look forward to any future they can imagine...
