When devastatingfloodwaters flowedthrough the streets ofNashville in May 2010,

people all over America wondered ifMusic City could recover from such atragedy. But Nashville residents knewbetter. As the news stories unfolded andthe waters receded, Music City residentsand businesses stood armed and readyto piece their city back together.

ad O nahvieOne nonprofit that rose to the

challenge of rebuilding the city wasHands On Nashville, an organizationthat was founded in 1991 to connectvolunteers to areas where they areneeded. In 2007, HON became a firstresponder in Metros Comprehensive

Emergency Management Plan, andwhen the Nashville f lood hit, HONproved its worth. In t he first threeweeks after the f lood, more than15,000 people participated involunteer programming.

Thanks to HONs quick actions, inthe days following the f lood, volunteersturned out in droves to tear out drywall, counsel flood victims, hand out foodand water, and attend to a variety ofother needs in Nashvilles hardest-hitcommunities. Thanks to the enormousresponse of Nashvillians wanting to lenda hand, Hands On Nashville receivedaccolades from other branches of thenational nonprofit.

was the extensive damages to a numberof large Nashville businesses. One

organization that suffered tremendouslyfrom floodwaters was Goodwill Industries.

The primary damage was to ourcorporate complex downtown, saysSusan Kay-Pittman, who handles crisiscommunications for Goodwill. Ourcorporate office had about 18 inches ofwater. In the warehouse, we had waterup to some of the drivers seats in ourbig rigs. Our drywall and carpet had tobe replaced, as well as a lot of electronics. The damage was absolutely devastating.

Luckily, Goodwill Industriesreceived the same support as most

other Nashville businesses. We have had tremendous supportfrom the community, Kay-Pittman

says. Even though they had suffereddamages, our donors still thought about

helping others even in the wake of losingeverything. [The f lood] was not a greattime for us, but it certainly proved thatthis is a strong company. Everyone fromthe president to the guys working on thedock were working shoulder to shoulder, pitching water out of our buildings.

SoundCheck Nashville a massiverehearsal studio where many ofNashvilles musicians stored equipmentand instruments suffered extensivedamage as well. After being buried

under floodwaters in May, SoundCheckNashville moved into a temporary home, where customers were able to clean and

sanitize t heir music equipment untilthe company moved back into its

permanent location in mid-July. Likeother businesses hit by floodwaters inMay, SoundCheck Nashville was able torebound over the summer.

Susan Kay-Pittman puts it best whendescribing Nashvilles response to thenatural disaster: Watching the cityrespond to the flood was incredible.Seeing all the volunteers come out torebuild Nashville made me so proudto call this place home.

to many people who visitMusic City, Nashville culturecan be summed up onBroadway, with its cowboy

boot stores and honky-tonk bars. Butlocals know that a different type ofculture exists in the neighborhoods thatsurround Nashville. The small pocketsof local culture in Nashvilles 12 South,Germantown and East Nashvilleneighborhoods have been cultivatedthanks to local business owners,award-winning restaurants and thefriendly residents who live there.

DrinkHaus is intended to serve theneighborhood, and to elaborate on whatthe neighborhood already has, which isunique, independently owned, and family-

owned businesses, Roos says. The wholepoint of our business is that its a greatlittle place that has kept its soul.

Germantown, an 18-square-blockarea with great views of downtown, isthe site of Nashvilles first residentialsubdivision, with structures built asearly as the 1830s. The area was onceneglected, but an inf lux of creativenew residents has once again madeit a diverse and vibrant urbanneighborhood that business ownersare excited to serve.

Among them are pasta-makers, hotdog hot spots and some great localrestaurants. One standout is The CocoaTree, an artisan chocolate and truffle cafefeaturing creations like the popular JackDaniels and crystallized ginger truffle. After running a storefront in Franklin,Tenn., for five years, chocolatier BethanyThouin moved her delicious creations toGermantown for Nashvillians to enjoy.

early 90 percent of the 500taxi drivers in Nashvilleare from foreign countries, and many of them are

refugees from Somalia, Sudan and Iraq.To make sure they can communicate

professionally with customers, read amap and navigate around Nashville, theTennessee Foreign Language Institutehas created a Taxi Pro HospitalityTraining Program that potential driversmust now pass before being granted acab license.

Its just one of many innovative andentrepreneurial ventures occurring

throughout Nashville these days.In the past, customers have

complained that they get nervous whendrivers speak in their native language, which is often Arabic, so we insist thatdrivers only speak English even if itsbroken English, says Angela Harris,Taxi Pro program director at TennesseeForeign Language Institute, whoseprogram is the only one of its kind inthe country. Also in the past, manyMuslim drivers would have issuestaking passengers to a bar, or evenhelping a blind woman into a cabbecause some countries forbid men

and women strangers to have any physicalcontact. We tell the drivers if they cantget past those issues, they wont be hired. We tell them that this is a professionwhere they will get better tips if they arekind and cordial to customers.

"educing overall energy usage or a city as large

there are 70 recommendations on the table to guide

Nashville's uture along a sustainability path, andsome programs are already in place."

Those programs include an electric car-charging

station in downtown Nashville, along with bie-share

and car-share initiatives. Car sharing involves ive

    energy-eicient vehicles pared throughout Nashville

that can be rented and used by the public or an houror two at a time, on any day.

Blosser also points out that the P Building Products

company he wors or is trying to become a showpiece

o sustainability. One eample is that 76 percent o

current energy used throughout the P corporation

    is renewable energy.

"s or Nashville, a riverront development project

is moving orward so that the city will soon see some

very green development occurring on both sides o
