DESCRIPTION
Located in south-central Virginia along the border with North Carolina, Danville and Pittsylvania County are home to approximately 108,000 residents total. Preservation of historic homes and buildings showcase the city’s earliest days as a tobacco and textile powerhouse in the mid-1800s through the turn of the century. Meanwhile, some of the most innovative business development programs in the nation have attracted new investment. Downtown Danville has undergone a transformation with renovated facades, new businesses and ongoing support of community activities.TRANSCRIPT

The Pepsi Building in Danville
14 DANVILLE
It has become a centerpiece of downtown Danville again, after serving as a busy rail yard for Southern Railroad and the site
of the city’s gas and purifying plant long ago.
When the nation’s railroad industry began to downsize considerably in the 20th century, the once-vibrant Crossing at the Dan started to fall into disrepair and neglect at its downtown site along the Dan River. Many old buildings sat vacant for years, but today the Crossing has been transformed into an entertainment complex for the 21st century.
Located at the Crossing in 2011
are the Carrington Pavilion, Danville Science Center, Riverwalk Trail, Pepsi Building, Amtrak Crescent train station and a Community Market Building.
“This place used to be a big rail yard and there are still some old tracks buried under the ground,” says Jacob McCann, Crossing at the Dan program director. “These days, the Crossing is getting more popular and busier and growing every year – we even added a community garden in 2011 where people can sign up to plant and harvest produce.”
All Crossing at the Dan buildings are owned and leased out by the city of Danville except for the Science Center, which sits on the grounds but
is owned by the state of Virginia. Here is some quick background on sites at the Crossing:
Carrington PavilionCarrington Pavilion is in a park that
has 1,100 fixed seats, and another 5,000 people can attend concerts and events thanks to lawn seating. A large stage accommodates at least three major concerts each year, and acts that have appeared in recent years include the Zac Brown Band, Brad Paisley, Lynryd Skynryd and The Beach Boys.

Pittsylvania county vineyardsThe homeplace vineyard in chatham is true to its name. The
vineyard is owned and operated by the fourth generation of the
Williams family to work on the family land. originally a tobacco
farm purchased by the family in 1912, it is now a budding
vineyard and local spot for great wine and entertainment. The
family planted their first vines in March 2005 and have added
three new varieties of grapes in the years since then to expand
their growing wine list. homeplace gives tours of the vineyard
and wine-making process, and in 2010 they opened a log cabin,
hand built from the logs of old tobacco barns, where they now
host tastings.
Just a few miles outside of chatham is another great virginia
winery, the Tomahawk Mill vineyard and Winery. The land on
Tomahawk creek was owned by James anderson for 100 years
from 1888 and used as a grist mill. The mill was turned into a
vineyard in 1988. Today the vineyard boasts nine different
varieties of wine from a sweet concord to a dry chardonnay.
Tomahawk hosts several wine festivals and seasonal events
throughout the year.

Military history MuseumDanville is home to the american armoured foundation
Tank Museum, where military history buffs – or little kids who
love big tanks – can come marvel at some of the military’s
awesome weaponry.
The monstrous-looking vehicles on display at the museum
range from tanks used during Desert storm all the way back to
World War ii. some were made in Russia, like the T54/55 iraqi
tank, and some were made in Britain, like the World War ii
tank, the ferret. each tank comes with an exciting explanation
of american history and the wars the military has fought.
Dan Daniel Memorial Park
Just below the Dan River is the Dan Daniel Memorial park, which is the newest member to the Danville parks system. the 150-acre park is where the home field of the Danville Braves is located. the park also has four beautiful nature trails that wind through the hilly terrain about a half-mile each. there is the turkey trot, Doe Run, hidden hollow and Grassy Knolls trails, each with a picture-perfect view of the landscape of Danville.
the Riverwalk trail is a less physically demanding place where walkers, hikers and even moms with strollers can enjoy. the trail leads to the heart of downtown Danville and the Danville science center.
Danville teens and extreme sports fanatics will love the phillip Wyatt Memorial skatepark, which is also part of the larger park. some of the features include three quarterpipes (each six feet), rails, grind boxes and a half pyramid.
agriculture keeps Growingagriculture is big business in Pittsylvania county, and it’s
getting a big boost with the new olde Dominion agricultural
complex in chatham. The $5.2 million complex includes a 40-
stall farmers market and a livestock center, and offers lots of
extra space for agricultural and agritourism events and education.
The center houses a 53,000-square-foot indoor arena for horse
and cattle shows and an 11,000-square-foot, 500-seat conference
center. The complex is available for receptions, weddings,
concerts, graduations, car shows and
other events. The complex is a one-
stop shop for all of Pittsylvania
county’s farmers. They can
purchase everything from
fertilizer to insurance under
the roof of the
olde Dominion.

Great GolfDanville golf lovers, get your putters ready – this city is
rolling with a variety of gorgeous greens.
The members-only Danville Golf club is an almost
100-year-old course that was designed to challenge even the
most skilled golfers. The Tuscarora country club is another
private course with an 18-hole par 70, including challenging
Bermuda fairways and narrow tree lines. Danville’s Goodyear
Golf club is an excellent place to enjoy the local wildlife, and
the Ringgold Golf club and cedar’s Golf course are two other
spots in Danville to relax and hit a few balls.
New yMca locationThe Danville family yMca is so popular
with Danville residents, it has nearly outgrown
its current facility on Main street. But not to
worry – something even better is on the way.
yMca officials have announced plans to build
a new $13 million facility along the Dan River as
part of a larger, city-wide catalyst for downtown
and riverfront revitalization. The city of Danville’s
goal is to make the downtown area easily
accessible and increase the quality of options
residents have for activities. The yMca will soon
be housed in a state-of-the-art building and will
be able to expand its programs and services to
serve even more residents.

Everything old will soon be new again in downtown Danville. A master redevelopment along the banks of the Dan River is bringing city leaders,
business owners and residents together as the Danville River District takes shape.
blending danville’s future and past“The focus of the plan is to redefine the
boundaries of the existing downtown and Tobacco Warehouse historic districts into the new River District,” says Anne Moore-Sparks, project manager for the City of Danville’s Office of Economic Development. She says the district will blend urban design with the historic character of downtown Danville, addressing issues such as
connectivity to the river, vehicle accessibility, streetscape improvements, vacancy issues, public spaces, and funding and development opportunities.
Inspired by the revitalization of Greenville, S.C., the Danville Regional Foundation and Danville city leaders recruited a national urban design firm to develop the River District Master Plan, to be submitted to the city in late 2011. The plan will identify short- and long-term projects, and has garnered much community support.

changes already under way. In spring 2011, the district welcomed upscale bar and restaurant Jake’s on Main to 215 Main Street. Also opening in 2011 was 316 Cibo, a Wi-Fi hotspot serving breakfast and lunch items such as pastries, fresh fruit parfaits, paninis, soups and salads. The eateries join downtown’s already popular Main Street Coffee Emporium. Additional retailers include Amburn and Company Salon and Spa on Main, Adam’s Shoe Shop and the Ferrell Building. In late 2011, Averett University’s Graduate Professional Studies program and the Danville Regional Foundation will relocate to a shared space on Bridge Street in the heart of the Tobacco Warehouse District, serving as a catalyst for further development in the district. The River District also is expected to grow thanks to downtown incentives such as the Real Estate Abatement Program, Virginia Enterprise Zone Program, Local Enterprise Zone Incentives, and the Federal and State Rehabilitation Tax Credit.
Residential units in the Danville River District will exceed 170 by late 2011, when the Ferrell Building will complete restoration of 13 market-rate apartments and commercial space. Old-world charm and a recent $9.5 million renovation draws residents to the Dan River Crossing Senior Apartment Homes on Bridge Street. Residents of all ages discover luxurious urban style and spectacular city views at The Burton Condominiums, and Lindsay Lofts also offers residents impeccably modern design in the heart of Danville. For families on a fixed income, Lynn Street Lofts offers affordable two- and three-bedroom rentals.
“The types of residents are very diverse and that is encouraging for the district,” Moore-Sparks says. “The condition of a downtown is an economic indicator for the rest of the community. The end goal is to improve the quality of life for our citizens while recruiting new jobs and investment to Danville.”

“Today we attract 30,000 visitors a year, which is double what we had in attendance in the mid-2000s,” says Jeff Liverman, executive director at Danville Science Center. “The center provides many opportunities for all ages to continue to learn, and we are a true family destination.”

18 DaNville DaNvillepittsylvaNiaco.coM 19
It’s understandable that Robert Bennett has a sunny disposition.
Bennett is the CEO at U.S. Green Energy Corporation, a relatively new
company that manufactures solarized building materials. The company is currently constructing a $30 million, 27,000-square-foot plant in Danville that is scheduled to open in the third quarter of 2011.
“We will actually heat and chill our new building using solar power we collect from its roof,” Bennett says. “U.S. Green Energy looked at a number of locations in Virginia as well as five or six different states for our new facility, and we chose Danville because the city already has green technology plans they are actually implementing. Danville isn’t just talking about green technology – it is embracing it.”
U.S. Green Energy is among a growing number of green tech companies now doing business in Danville and Pittsylvania County, and Bennett estimates that his company will have a workforce of 400 employees within three years. Once the plant is operating in late 2011, U.S. Green Energy will begin producing a variety of solar roofing materials such as slate, tiles and shingles.
“If a business owner or homeowner is considering a premium roof made of slate, synthetic slate, ceramic or tile, our products are less expensive than traditional roofing products, and our customers will have free electricity thanks to our solar technology,” he

says. “A premium traditional slate roof costs about $75,000 these days and we can do it for around $50,000, thanks in part to federal energy incentives. And don’t forget – there is free electricity from solar power.”
Bennett says U.S. Green Energy already has customers lined up in Danville as well as big cities like Richmond and Washington D.C.
“Slate roofs are attractive and popular for commercial clients as well as owners of historic homes, but slate roofs wear out after a while,” he says. “It makes great sense to replace one with a solar slate roof for the many reasons I have mentioned.”
Computer greeneryAnother local company that focuses
on green technology is EcomNets, which will open in Danville’s Airside Industrial Park in late 2011 to manufacture Verdio green computers. The Verdio PC is the size of a mousepad and made from recyclable materials, and only requires 28 watts of power.
EcomNets hopes to produce 20,000 PCs during its first year and sell the computers for $299, compared to green PCs from Dell and Hewlett-Packard that retail for about $499. EcomNets officials say they plan to initially hire 160 employees, including assembly workers, software engineers, and a sales and tech support staff.
Crops into fuelsMeanwhile, at Piedmont
BioProducts LLC, this Gretna company is researching raw material crops for the production of future biofuels. Besides clean energy, a key goal for developing new biofuels is to help the economy in communities hit by the loss of private agriculture and traditional manufacturing industries such as textiles, furniture and tobacco.
The crops and raw materials for Piedmont BioProducts LLC will be grown by farmers who are members of Piedmont Producer Agricultural Cooperative. Current crops and raw materials being studied for future biofuels include switchgrass, corn, hay, plants and trees.
“Danville-Pittsylvania County is lucky to have well-trained workers who are familiar with production work, and will be quick to learn about all kinds of emerging green technologies,” Bennett says.
ecomNets is scheduled to open in Danville’s airside industrial park in late 2011.

Chamber ReportchamberfocusesoneDucationanDsmallbusiness
The Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce is demonstrating success through a variety of innovative programs that are making a difference in the community. At the top of the list is education, with education grants, meaningful workforce development initiatives and hands-on tools that small businesses need to thrive and expand.
“Education has always been important to this chamber,” says Laurie Moran, chamber president and CEO. “This year, thanks to the generosity of the Danville Regional Foundation, we will award more than $125,000 in grants to local educators. This will open up the opportunity for creativity and innovation with teachers like we have never seen before.”
Requests for the funds will range from a few hundred dollars to thousands, Moran says, and they promise to enhance the classroom.
“We’ve got some of the brightest and most creative teachers in this community, and we’re excited that we’re going to be able to fund some of their great ideas,” she says.
Workforce development is a priority with the chamber and partnering agencies, says Moran, who was recently elected chair of the National Association of Workforce Boards.
Working with Danville Community College, the chamber brought together area manufacturers and developed a training program where the classroom is modeled more like the workplace. At the end of the course, manufacturers have access to all records so that when they are ready to hire, they have proven information from which to draw.
The majority of chamber membership comes from the small- business sector, and the chamber works closely with the Dan River Business Development Center, an incubator that assists start-up businesses and those in a growth mode.
“One of the greatest values we provide is the ability to network and meet other businesses,” Moran says. “We’ve found that our small businesses don’t know how to network to market their businesses. Over the past 18 months, we have focused on workshops that help our small businesses refine their networking skills.”
Customer service can make or break a business, Moran says, and the chamber has recently held many customer service training workshops.
“This is a critical issue for business,” Moran says. “Typically, it is what differentiates businesses that succeed from businesses that fail.”
Failure is certainly not part of the program of work of this chamber. “I believe you have to demonstrate success,” Moran says. “You develop good plans and programs, and if they’re good enough, the funds and the people will come to you.” – Betsy Williams
