TAKING CARE OF YOUR FAMILYBUYING OR SELLING A HOUSE? NEED HELP WITH WILLS, TRUSTS OR PROBATE? WE CAN HELP.

    PROMOTIONWOSSKOW BROWN

Dont stay together for thechildren, says Gary Crothers, solicitor advocate (higher courtscivil proceedings) and family lawspecialist at Wosskow Brown.

For many people, Christmas is an exciting time of year anda wonderful opportunity to spend extra time with friends, family and loved ones. For those experiencing relationship difficulties, however, it

can bring problems into even sharper focus and highlight theneed to explore a fresh start at the beginning of a new year.

The latest available annual divorce statistics, which werepublished by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) inNovember, show that divorce was most common in couplesaged between 40 and 44 one of the most likely age groupsto include parents of young children.

If you are a parent considering divorce, a poll by family laworganisation Resolution could help to ease your concernsabout children being caught up in the process.

The survey found that most children 82 per cent do notthink that parents should stay together for their sake. Thesurvey also revealed that a huge majority thought it wasimportant that they did not have to choose between parents.

One of the children questioned said: Dont stay together fora childs sake, better to divorce than stay together for anotherfew years and divorce on bad terms. Another suggested thatchildren will certainly be very upset at the time but will often

realise, later on, thatit was for the best.

If you areconsidering divorceor are concernedabout the impact theprocess may have onyour children, it mayhelp to speak to theexperts. At WosskowBrown, we offer afree initial

appointment in which we find out about your situation andexplain how we can help. We can also provide a fixed-feequote so you can budget effectively, and discuss paymentplans to ease the financial burden now that legal aid is nolonger available for most matters of family law.

To find out more about how Wosskow Brown can help you, callyour local branch and ask to speak to the family team.

How has the governments Autumn Statement andSpending Review affected me as a home owner?

Many home owners will not have been affected by ChancellorGeorge Osbornes latest announcement. However, those lookingto purchase a buy-to-let property, a holiday home, a house for arelative or a second home will have had a bit of a shock.

From April 2016, the Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) paid bythose who already own a property will rise by three per cent. Toput that into context, the tax bill on a 200,000 property will leapfrom the 1,500 that you would pay today to 7,500 when thechanges come into force next spring.

Designed to make life easier for first time buyers by preventingthe market being dominated by buy-to let landlords, thesurcharge is also being seen as a tax grab for the governmentand is forecasted to earn the treasury almost 1billion a year from2020. This extra income, they say, will be used to double thehousing budget and build 400,000 affordable homes within thenext five years.

However, the news along with changes to mortgage tax reliefannounced in the Budget this summer has been described ascatastrophic for the private rental sector as landlords may beforced to increase rent or provide less maintenance in order tocover their additional costs.

The changes are also predicted to have an immediate impacton the residential housing market. Landlords or home ownerswho own buy-to-let properties and are looking to purchase newhomes for themselves may be willing to offer more for aproperty in order to secure the purchase before the new SDLTrates come into effect. There is also a chance that, once theinvestor interest dies down and competition decreases, houseprices may fall.

So, if you are thinking of moving within the next few months, itmay be wise to put your house on the market soon to takeadvantage of this potential swell in interest and get the bestpossible price for your home.

  • PROMOTIONSHEFFIELD WINDOW CENTRE

It was way back in 1975, when Rubiks Cubes were all therage and Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen topped the charts, that the company was founded. Fast forward 40 years andIan Hunter, who took over the running of Sheffield WindowCentre (SWC) in the early eighties, is managing director... andwith all his four grown-up children also involved, this is a truefamily business.

You dont last that long in the same city unless you receiveconsistently excellent feedback from satisfied customers andas the decades have rolled by, generations of Sheffield folkhave found SWC to be the first, and most reliable, name theylook for.

SWC was also the first Sheffield business to be given TrustedTrader status by Which?, a nationwide consumer championwebsite that not only tests products from washing machines topower tools, but also gives local companies a rigorousassessment before naming only the very best on their onlinedirectory of recommended trades people.

Of course, there have been big changes since 1975 andSWC has stayed at the very top by investing in new machinery, adopting green policies, and constantly researching methods ofproduction to provide the most up-to-date levels of securityand thermal efficiency.

The one thing that hasnt changed, and never will, is theirold fashioned approach to selling. SWC is renowned for itsNo Pressure Policy leaving customers to decide in their owntime. Whether it be price, product, or service they cant bebeaten and thats the reason they never need to push orpester.

The company, which has premises on Oakbrook Road,Broad Lane, Scotland Street and Rockingham Street, uses topbrand REHAU a market leader in polymer extrusion for alltheir installations. Their multi-chambered profile uPVC doesntwarp or discolour like so many lesser brands. And if youre

worried youwont be able toget a frame tomatch yourdesired colour ordesign, dont be.

Frames come in a variety of coloured foils, including cream, black, grey and green, as well as several wood grain coloursincluding rosewood and oak. You can also have your framessprayed to match any RAL colour so youll have newwindows that look exactly how you want them to.

Good-looking windows are no good if you can still feel thechill but thanks to SWC, you wont feel a thing. Theirstandard windows have energy efficiency ratings of A, whiletheir standard double-glazed units are made from PilkingtonsKS glass, are argon-filled and incorporate a warm edge spacerbar to retain the heat in your home. Its not just about stayingcosy, though energy efficient windows can help you to makebig savings on your heating bill.

Perhaps the most important thing you want from a windowis to know that its secure, that it will keep would-be thievessuccessfully at bay. SWCs windows are fitted with a multi-pointshoot bolt locking mechanism the best there is. They also fitanti-jemmy devices on all vulnerable opening windows soyouve got the peace of mind of knowing that youll be as safeas possible.

Dont be misled by the name, by the way SWC do morethan just windows. They offer an expert stained glass serviceand fascias and soffits, as well as high-quality doors. These allhave Hoppe Security handles fitted as standard approved bythe police, no less as well as cylinder locks which are anti-pick, drill, snap and bump and again have a multi-point lockingsystem.

Theres more, too specifically, conservatories. Due to theadvances in glass specification, SWC can now provideconservatories, which are suitable for year-round use, thanks toglass which has been specifically designed for the purpose. Itoffers a wide range of benefits including thermal insulation withsolar control, glare reduction, enhanced sound insulation andself-cleaning properties. The company can also installunderfloor heating and laminated floors, as well as taking careof the building, plastering and electrical work, so you only dealwith one point of contact throughout the entire process.

Get in touch with Sheffield Window Centre today theycare about your windows, doors and conservatories just asmuch as you do.

  • PROMOTIONSTAVES ESTATE AGENTS

Independent, family-run, successful those are the reasons why moreand more people are selling their homes through Staves Estate Agents.

Its official more people in S12 are choosing Staves EstateAgents to sell their property than any other agent.According to Rightmove statistics, of the 44 branches in thearea, Staves has listed the most new properties in 2015. This isa fantastic achievement for a branch that only opened inGleadless in January this year.

We are delighted by these figures, and it just goes to showthat there is a real appetite for people wanting to use a local, independent, family-run estate agent over a larger corporateagency, says owner Matthew Staves. We care very muchabout what were doing and people like that we have a vestedinterest in selling their property and are therefore prepared togo the extra mile to ensure that the best possible results areachieved for our clients.

With an excellent sales record and an extensive portfolio ofproperties for sale not only in S12 but in the surroundingareas including S20 and S13, too both buyers and sellers are

reaping the benefits of this rapidly expanding business. The company was established by Matthew and his wife Amy

in 2009 in Woodseats. Just three years ago they expandedwith a branch at Dronfield, before opening the Gleadless officethis year. This most recent launch proved so popular that theyhave already expanded further, by taking over the propertynext door.

The spacious extension not onlyensures that Staves can meet theneeds of the currently buoyant market, but it has also given them a strongerpresence, more on-site parking and theability to provide more services.Theyare pleased to present a new mortgagecentre with appointments available fivedays a week, and an evening home

visit service is also available. As well as this Staves haveextended their lettings service with a dedicated department inbranch.Matthew believes their success stems from industryexperience and knowledge of the local area. He has worked inthe industry for over 20 years and Gleadless employees DavidHague and Michelle Fenney Williams have lived in the area forover 40 years between them, meaning they can offer excellentfirst-hand knowledge and understanding of the local propertymarket.

Each member of the team is totally focussed on providingfirst-class customer care and client satisfaction. They understandthe importance of visiting properties, and clients are oftenimpressed to find the director of the company on theirdoorstep. We always have the customers best interests atheart, says Matthew. When someone gives us an instructionto sell a property, we do our utmost to match theirrequirements and outdo expectations.

Whether you are looking to buy, sell or rent a property, atStaves you will receive a specialist adviser and seamlesscommunication. Pop into the office or give them a call todiscover their competitive rates and discuss how the expertscan help you.

  • PROMOTIONSHEFFIELD GLAZING

As the weather begins to improve, the hoursof daylight extend and the flowers start toblossom, there are few greater pleasuresthan gazing out into the garden and lookingforward to stepping outside to embrace the joys of spring.

What can quickly bring this enjoyment to halt, however, aremisty windows that obscure the view and make everything looka little less beautiful.

But you neednt suffer with a misty view any longer asSheffield Glazing is on hand to replace failed units or inefficientwindows and help you enjoy spring to its full extent.

With more than 30 years experience in the industry,Sheffield Glazings owner Graham Warsop certainly knows hisstuff when it comes to all things glazing. Having worked onboth the manufacturing and installation sides of the business and now specialising in installation he knows this industryinside out and is proud to offer fantastic products at veryreasonable prices.

The Pilkington KS glass sealed units that Graham fits asstandard are filled with argon gas and manufactured to BSIstandard so you have the peace of mind that your new glass

has been rigorouslytested and is highlyenergy efficient.

And as we all knowby now, its not justour carbon footprintthat increases withinefficient glazingproducts, but also ourenergy bills.

After a period oftime, the seal betweenthe two pieces of glass

in a double glazed window unit breaks down and causes amisty effect, explains Graham. When this happens, it meansthey no longer have any thermal efficiency or sound proofingand heat loss can become a big problem.

While you may think that the only solution is to fork out for anew frame as well as new glass, Graham is pleased to say thatthis isnt necessary. What I do is fit the latest energy-efficientglass into existing frames of any size. As long as there is nodamage to those frames, there is no need to replace them and this can save people a lot of money.

While frames have improved slightly over the years, theyhave mainly stayed the same so you can rest assured that youwont be losing heat through old frames. Huge improvementsin glazing technologies, however, are benefiting homeownersmore than ever.

So why wait until the glass is misty? With very competitiveprices and no VAT to pay, Sheffield Glazing can offer anaffordable option for new double glazing that will instantlyimprove the energy efficiency of your home without breakingthe bank.

As well as replacing the glass in windows, Graham alsocarries out repairs on any type of frame and any aspect ofglazing, including the glass in conservatory roofs and patiodoor units and he does it all to the highest standards.

Give Graham at Sheffield Glazing a call to arrange your freequotation and start looking forward to a brighter view.

  • IMAGEEATING OUT

HurrywiththecurryAccording to locals, Mosborough has been crying out for an Indianrestaurant. Has Muktar Ali succeeded in filling the spice gap? We sent Fiona Barber to find out.

About time; Ive been waiting years forthis, my friend Charlotte enthusedover a delightful portion ofpoppadums and pickles. Far from havingnever experienced the joys of Indiancuisine as you might be thinking she isin fact quite the foodie. But living locally toMosborough, she felt one thing it wasmissing was a dine-in Indian restaurant.

There were many locals who felt thesame, so it was no surprise when, sixmonths ago, owner and chef Muktar Ali(known locally as Ali) opened The VineIndian Cuisine, and it was welcomed withopen arms and eager customers.

The restaurant sits on the former site ofThe Vine Tavern, and a three-monthrenovation changed the space into a moreopen-plan setting while retaining someoriginal features including the low-beamedceilings.

Ali has owned restaurants in variouslocations including Dronfield and Tickhill, but his dream was always to open arestaurant in Mosborough. I dont reallyknow why, he confesses. Its just a nicearea with great people and I wanted to givethem proper, fresh Indian food. To makesure Ali fulfils his own high standards, heworks in the kitchen seven days a weekand spends daytimes prepping ingredientsfor the evening diners.

Following the poppadums andhomemade dips and pickles, our next tasteof Alis cooking came in the form oftandoori king prawns and a sheik kebab. The four prawns were a fiery orange-redcolour and tasted just as good as theylooked, while the meaty sheik kebabs werepacked with flavour, proving Alis belief inmaking everything fresh is well worth theeffort.

The main menu at The Vine is extensiveand many of the chefs specials are uniqueto the restaurant, making it ideal if yourelooking for something a bit different. Weopted for jal jhinga lamb from the Vinespecials and a classic chicken bhuna fromthe traditional menu. The tender lambcame in a tomato, garlic and chilli sauceand was and topped with caramelisedonions, which created a delicious crunchytexture. The chicken bhuna was just astasty, with generous pieces of chicken, athick sauce and fresh peppers.Accompanied by side orders of tarka dahl, mushroom rice, and a garlic and cheesenaan, it was the ideal Friday night feast.

While Ali takes care of the cooking, long-time friend and colleague AfazMohammed (known as Uncle Afaz tomany) runs front of house. He is the bestwaiter and I have so much respect for him, gushes Ali. Alis sons Mohammed Iqbaland Mohammed Imran also work at therestaurant, along with Bash, who hasworked for Ali for 18 years. I like to lookafter my staff; we really are like one bigfamily, says Ali. Im very happy here.

It seems opening The Vine IndianCuisine has not only fulfilled Alis dreams, but also the needs of many curry-lovinglocals. And, if you dont feel like dining out,The Vine even delivers to the surroundingareas.

  • In a quiet corner of Woodseats, set backfrom the busy Chesterfield Road, therelies a diner that, despite its discreetlocation, manages to draw in crowds fromall over Sheffield. And, as my partner Benand I discovered on a typically bustlingFriday night, Swanky Franks secret is noreal secret at all great big plates ofAmerican food to satisfy even the hardiestappetites have been going down a stormfor years.

Ben had clearly missed the memo aboutSwankys famously huge portion sizes. While I knowingly tucked into a carb-lightstarter of chicken wings just the rightlevel of spice and a lovely Caesar dip todunk them in he eagerly wolfed down agreat big pile of pulled pork nachos. Theplate groaned with tortilla chips smotheredin sour cream, guacamole, cheese, salsa, jalapenos and homemade pulled pork and Iwondered how he was ever going tomanage another two courses.

Oh how I laughed when, minutes intoour mains, a waiter came over to checkhow Ben was proceeding with his giant hotdog a 12inch, 6oz pork sausage, piledhigh with chilli and onions and loaded intoa freshly baked bun. The reason for thewaiters interest? Diners brave enough topolish off every last morsel of this beast areawarded a medal for their efforts. Needlessto say, he failed spectacularly.

Over on my side of the table, my haloslipped clean off as I tucked into a calzonewith vigour all thoughts ofbeing healthylong forgotten. This traditional folded-overpizza base was fit to burst with tomato, mozzarella, pepperoni, salami, mushrooms, red onion and ham and topped with a richNapoli tomato sauce, and I enjoyed everysinful mouthful. Yes, there are healthieroptions on the menu, but who really visitsSwankys craving a salad?

Grease played onloop in thebackground and thestereo kicked outboth old and newclassics (think DireStraits followed byKings of Leon). The scene was very muchset and a Lynchburg Lemonade followedby a bottle of Brooklyn lager completed our

    authentic America diner experience. Well,almost.

Ive seen enough American films (thisscreening of Grease was perhaps my 20thviewing) to know that nothing says dinerquite like an ice-cream to share served in atall glass with two long spoons, you knowthe drill. Its the nearest thing to romance

you can find here and we lookedevery bit the stereotype; jostlingeach others spoons out of the wayto scoop up more cream/ice-cream/strawberries than the other.

If youre looking for a good time,a buzzing atmosphere and a greatchoice of deliciously wicked food, there are few more perfect locationsthan Swanky Franks. But if you

want to take home one of those covetedmedals, Id advise you to skip lunch. Andmaybe breakfast, too, come to think of it.

THE BEASTUNLEASHEDIt was a man v sausage showdown at

Swanky Franks and the hot dog won.

  • Pantomime season is back and sees DamianWilliams return to the Lyceum to causechaos and (hopefully) lots of laughs.Words: Fiona Barber

Butch, bold and boisterous; DamianWilliams has been causing slapstickchaos on the Lyceum stage as a pantodame for the last seven years. This festiveseason, his reign continues as he plays WidowTwankey in the fun-packed familypantomime, Aladdin.

The demand for pantomime seems to be asstrong as ever (last years Dick Whittington wasseen by over 44,000 people) and Damianbelieves they remain so popular because it issomething the whole family can be involved in.It is great entertainment and a great familyChristmas tradition, he says. No other countryhas got pantomime, and were the only onesthat do it well, because were the only ones thatreally understand it. A panto is often the firsttime kids will ever go to a theatre, so its quiteimportant.

Damian recalls his Nan taking him to thetheatre as a young boy. They went to seeRobinson Crusoe with Charlie Drake in it. Iwas only five or six but I still remember someof the gags and what the dame did, so it madea big impression, he admits.

Theatre was always something he wasinterested in and Damians first taste of thelimelight came aged just 15, in a Bugsy Maloneproduction at his local theatre. This marked thebeginning of a long and successful career. Heexplains: The guy that directed it ran a repcompany and he said to me: when you leaveschool, if youd like to go into the business, dont go to drama school, come and join therep company and well go on tour. I was taughtby him, by watching other actors and I learntmy craft that way. In my first panto when I was16, I played the ghost in the ghost gag andthen after that I started playing villains. I playedvillains for years and then I got offered thechance to play a dame.

Damian admits the villain is a great role toplay, but he prefers the dame because of hislove of comedy. You can go in and causechaos and get the laughs, he says. The thing Ilike about playing a dame is that you can havecontact with the audience and you can be ontheir side. I like to play it as though Im part of

the audience and you know, you can get awaywith murder.

Of course, no dame would be completewithout a set of fabulous outfits and Damianconfesses he has over 100 costumes storedaway, which he describes as a playground ofwigs, feathers and slippers. To make sureWidow Twankey was dressed for theperformance of a lifetime, earlier in the yearDamian met with Helga Wood, who designsand makes the costumes, to discuss what theyhad in store.

While dames and designers might spendmonths planning costumes, Damian admitsthat wardrobe malfunctions are simplyunavoidable and says: Ive had things falldown, pop off and things split, but you just geton with it.

While the dame role has been a major partof Damians acting career for 20 years, he hasalso been involved in many other productionsand acknowledges playing his all-time favouritecomedian Tommy Cooper in Being TommyCooper was a particular highlight. I like all theold-school comics like Tommy Cooper, LesDawson, Morecambe and Wise, he says. Iwas brought up on people like Laurel andHardy; they were funny, funny men and thatsvery rare these days. People like Lee Evanscome quite close to that style but you dont getthat anymore; its less physical.

This physical comedy is very much still part ofpanto and Damian confirms there will be plentyof slosh and mess in this years Aladdin. He hasbeen involved in a great number of pantosincluding Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, SnowWhite, Dick Whittington, Jack and The Bean Stalkand Aladdin, but he says there is still one he hasyet to tick off. I would love to do Mother Goosehere. We have talked about it, so Im hoping inthe next few years well be able to do it.

You can see Damian and the rest of the cast including Chris Gascoyne (Peter Barlow fromCoronation Street), Alex Winter (CBeebies), andwriter and entertainer Hilary ONeil in thisyears spectacular production at the Lyceumfrom 4 December until 3 January.

The thing I likeabout playing adame is that youcan have contactwith the audienceand you can beon their side. Ilike to play it asthough Im partof the audienceand you know, you can get awaywith murder.
