From the Desk of Fr. Peter

One time a hospice patient told me, “I had a dream straight out of the book of Revelation.” I replied, “I am sorry to hear that. It must have been terrifying.” “No, it wasn’t,” she replied. “Not the scary parts; the good parts of Revelation. I dreamt of Heav-en. And it was a place of wonder. With beautiful blue skies going on forever; with rivers teaming with every kind of fish you can imagine; all kinds of beautiful birds flying about, and trees, flowers...and people. Lots of people just being at peace.” I asked her, “Was God in your dream?” “Yes,” she replied. “Jesus was with me the whole time.” She was given a gift, before she died, with her sister who had rushed to be at her bedside, in the hospital room. Some might say it was just a dream. But I call it a vision; a powerful gift from the Good Shepherd, showing this beloved child of his the verdant pastures, and peaceful waters that awaited her. A glimpse of Heaven that gave peace to hers soul. For so many of you this is a time of testing and pain. A man I spoke with less than 24 hours of the time of this writing had called the collaborative phone number. He had admittedly grown up next to St. Vincent’s but has not been to church in quite some time. Nevertheless, someone very close to him was dying of Covid-19 in a Boston hospital, and he needed a sympathetic ear. A nurse friend of mine had reached out to me a few days earlier with alarming news: Despite a plethora of cautions being taken, she had unwittingly contracted the corona virus and was at home, recuperating. There have been members of our collaborative community with experiences similar to these. How many now have shared the experience of having loved ones in nursing homes, hospitals, or rehabilitation facilities, but unable to visit them. Unable to hold a loved one’s hand and tell her or him, “I love you.” In many cases, telephone or even Skype, Facetime, and WhatsApp have al-lowed a virtual presence by a loved one’s bedside. Though that is less than ideal. We are trying to be as creative and safe as we can be in assisting you and your loved ones. The Lord is with you. The Lord is truly with us, as Psalm 23 reminds us:

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. In verdant pastures he gives me repose; beside restful waters he leads me; he refreshes my soul. This pandemic is up close and personal to so many of you. A deadly epidemic that does not dis-criminate, causing tremendous hardship, pain, and loss. Through it all know that the pastoral staff of St. Monica is here for you. Although we cannot be present in the office, we check the phone lines frequently. Please call (617)268-8100, for both English and Spanish options. We have added bilingual Food Emergency options, as well. For Lithuanian language assistance, please call (617)433-0015. Please know we are here for you. Call us anytime, 24/7. And know too that you continue to be in our prayers. May Jesus the Good Shepherd guide, bless, protect and comfort you all. May his peace always refresh each one of our souls.
