World Health Organization (WHO) defined Family medicine as that specialty of medicine which isconcernedwithprovidingcomprehensivecare to individualsandfamiliesand integratingbiomedical,behavioural and social sciences. As an academic discipline, it includes comprehensive health careservices,educationandresearch.

Thespecialtyoffamilymedicinewascreatedin1969tofulfillthegeneralistfunctioninmedicine,whichsufferedwiththegrowthofsubspecializationandfragmentationofpersonalisedhealthcareafterWorldWarII.

In the increasingly fragmented world of health care, Family physicians are dedicated to providecomprehensivehealthcareforpeopleofallages—fromnewbornstoseniorsandtreatingthepersonaswhole.Unlikeotherspecialtiesthatarelimitedtoaparticularorganordisease,familymedicineintegratescareforpatientsofbothgendersandallages,andadvocatesforthepatientinacomplexhealthcaresystem.Familymedicine’scornerstoneisanongoingprocessofpatient-physicianrelationshipwiththepatientviewedinthecontextofthefamilyandtheirsocialsurrounding.

IntroductionIndia leads the world with largest number of diabetic subjects earning the dubious distinction ofbeing termed the “Diabetes capital of theworld”. The latest global figures on diabetes releasedbytheInternationalDiabetesFederation(IDF)hasraisedaseriousalarmforIndiabysayingthatnearly 52%ofIndiansaren’tawarethattheyaresufferingfromhighbloodsugar.Indiaispresentlyhometo 65million diabetics, secondonly to Chinawhich is home to 98.4million diabetics. IntroductionWith the restructuringofhealthcare in India,oneof themajorchanges inpatientcarehasbeenashiftfromsub-specialtycaretoprimarycare.Despitemajorprogressinthedevelopmentofeffectivetherapies toreducemortalityandmorbidity fromcardiovasculardisease, it isbecoming the leadingcauseofmortalityinIndia,whereheartailmentshavereplacedcommunicablediseasesasthebiggestkiller.Accordingtorecentdata,approximately30percentoftheurbanpopulationand15percentofthepopulationlivinginruralareas,sufferfromhighbloodpressureandheartattacks.Accordingtogovernmentdata,theprevalenceofheartfailureinIndiaduetocoronaryheartdisease,hypertension,obesity,diabetesandrheumaticheartdisease,rangesfrom1.3to4.6million,withanannualincidenceof491,600-1.8million.

Evaluation of Practicals

Formativeevaluation:Studentshavetosubmite-logsofclinicalcasesseen.TherewillbebimonthlyCRs,eachofwhichcanbeusedtologaminimumof2caseson-siteduringtheposting.Fromthepossible6CRs inayear, aminimumof10clinicalCase-Logsaresubmissibleforthe1-yearCourses,and20Case-logsforthe2-yrCourse,forFormativeevaluationofPracticals;carrying60%weightageofthetotalPracticalscore.

SummativeevaluationforPracticals,wouldconsistofproblem-based-learning(PBL)formatofMCQsExam,administeredonline,carrying40%weightageofthetotalPracticalscore.

Note: CPCR course has no practical component

ExaminationFees:ExaminationfeeofRs.2,500/-willbecollectedinthebeginningofthelastsemester,i.e. in thebeginningof thesecondsemester for the1-yearcoursesandthefourthsemester for the2-yearcourses.

Results:Theresultswillbeannouncedonline,andthestudentcandownloadtheresultsfromhis/herLMSaccount.

Re-Examination: If a candidate isassessedun-satisfactory forCertification,due topoorevaluationscores,he/shemayapplyforRe-examinationafter2monthsofthefirstattempt.Re-examinationFeeswouldapply.

Criteria for Award of Diploma/FellowshipAcandidateshouldsatisfythefollowingcriteriaforthesuccessfulcompletionofthecourse:• AdequateandsatisfactoryLog-Bookcompletion.• 50%marksinTotalTheoryevaluation.• 50%marksinTotalPracticalsevaluation.

Martin Luther Christian UniversitywillawardtheDiplomaorFellowshiporCertificatetothestudentaftersuccessfulcompletionoftheProgram.
