GSF recently published an article in the Journal ofCraniofacial Surgery on the "Clinical and EconomicImpact of The Global Smile Foundation SurgicalProgram" demonstrating that over the last decadewe have averted more than 13,000 years ofdisability for our patients who underwent primarycleft lip and palate repairs. This represents anestimated economic gain of $43,000-$82,000 perpatient.

GSF also recently published an article in CleftPalate-Craniofacial Journal on "Sustainable CleftCare: A Comprehensive Model Based on the GlobalSmile Foundation Experience" detailing a road mapfor the development of sustainable cleft care inoutreach settings. This can be accomplished bypromoting capacity-building initiatives thatcontribute to the development of comprehensiveand sustainable cleft care.

As part of our mission to improve global access to cleft care, GSF hosted the 3rdInternational Comprehensive Cleft Care Workshop (CCCW) in October 2020. Held as awebinar due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the workshop drew more than 300 attendees from39 countries for online sessions delivered by world-renowned experts in the cleft andcraniofacial fields. The workshop was co-hosted by GSF and Smile Train.

Workshop attendees can immediately begin to integrate their learning into practice and theimpact is far reaching. Registration is now open for the 4th International CCCW in Istanbul,Turkey. More information is available at: www.cleftworkshop.org.

GLOBAL ACCESS TO CLEFT CARE

The story of Matias's healthy smile shows why providing Comprehensive Cleft Care tounderserved communities is so critical. Not only was Matias born 8 weeks prematurely, buthe also had a severe type of cleft lip and palate that requires a complex surgery. To makematters worse, Matias and his family had to flee their home in Venezuela due to violenceand were living in a vulnerable situation in Ecuador.

When our volunteers evaluated him, they were concerned about his low weight. Like manyinfants with cleft, he could not feed properly and also needed special formula that hismother could not afford. Matias could not undergo surgery until he was at a healthyweight, but more concerning was the fact that he was not growing and thriving.

Our Speech Team showed Matias’s mother how to feed him with a special bottle andworked with Fundación Global Smile-Ecuador to raise money for the special formula to helpMatias thrive. One of GSF’s board members was so moved by Matias's story that he donatedenough to put the campaign over its goal.

Six months later, Matias had gained enough weight to undergo surgery! A year later he hada second procedure for his cleft palate. GSF and GSF-Ecuador teams also provided care forMatias during COVID-19 via Telehealth and we are happy to report that he is thriving.
