ILYA X Championships - Day ONEFollow RESULTS HERE
One Race Each FleetBig winds and bigger wind - that's how Day One went. Both fleetsarrived enthusiastically for the start of the 2019 ILYA XChampionships. With 115 boats on the water, it was a sight to behold. The senior fleet hosted a 9:00 warning; the junior fleet 9:30. Todaythat schedule is reversed.
Chip Mann and his topnotch team got off a beauty with LaBelle'sJackson Walker taking the lead for a comfortable finish line gun.
Sailing OO 144 with crew Paxton Denton (shown above), it was onesmiley team as they motored downwind. (Photo by Molly Burns).Augie Jarecki and Alex Mueller were the next big boys to cross theline. The crowd exploded as local sailor Kate Ness with MarthaHughes took third. Pine's Kit Harned and Stella Marban sneaked intofourth. The top five was rounded out by Cedar's Barkow team ofAustin and Max.

Team Tesar got off a start on the first go. Three boats were OCS (oneat one minute) but all returned and dug back the first leg. Steady, steady wind in the 13-16 range was a gift to the fleet.
Jack Steiner and Alec Harned led start to finish. (It was a great dayfor the Harneds with two in the senior fleet in the top ten and a winon the junior fleet) (For those of you at home, it is no small feat tospectate this event as the two fleets sail simultaneously - consider themany parents running between fleets. If only someone would invent aJumbotron for the water - or maybe a live feed - so parents could seeboth at the same time. Both families on the junior winning boat hadchildren in the senior fleet.) Back to racing - Finn Burdick and ColtonBurdick never left second place with his consistent performance theentire race. North Lake's junior standout this year, Cole Thompsonand Julia Janssen just took Pewaukee's Fritz Simon and Megan Isabellat the line. And then came Delavan who has been a powerhouse interms of performance this year. Their entire fleet is consistent withanyone of them leading the Delavan crew. Yesterday it was GrahamHetzler and Macey McClenathan - whose brother is over on the seniorcourse in 7th.
A brief video of X-41 winning the junior race is here.

Volleyball continues to be KING. Sam Rogers turns out to be a mutli-dimensional guy. He is known for sailing but volleyball may be hisother unknown talent - referee for parents and sailors, organizer and

The X fleet met under the tent during the "wait for the wind to diedown" time. X fleet representative Ted Rolfs led the fleet through anumber of topics - future regatta sites and formats, trophies, radios -with vigorous vocal expression from the youth. An after-meetingsuggestion was made for a radio lending program for this event whichwill be forwarded up the chain. There are a few new families whowould benefit from this --- or maybe the sailor who just plain forgot. The introduction of radios has been nearly 100% inclusive in itsinaugural year.
Last night was a social night off to allow the fleet to enjoy theMinnetonka area. Tonight is the big party. The island will be rocking.
Thanks to Minnetonka in advance for a great event. Competitors andvolunteers alike are smiles ear to ear. Old faces at registrationwelcomed the oldtimers back. The new faces of Minnetonka are sogracious to us visitors. The chef, Connie Blanchard, is no stranger tothis group. Her son David won the event many years ago. DianeBowers was serving breakfast. It's a who's who of Minnetonka's richhistory.
RESULTS HERE. Follow today as three races are planned. RARELY(only once in the editor's memory) have we finished four in a day butall is on the table.
