Background History

Khayelitsha is a large township with over 900,000 inhabitants located on the outskirts of Cape Town. The majority of the population originate from regions outside Western Cape Province: it is estimated that 5% of the population is born in Khayelitsha, 75% come from Eastern Cape in the hope to find a job and increase the quality of their life. 30% of the population are children under the age of 14, and 46% of the total population is between 15 and 34 years old. Over 66% of the population live in informal housing (shacks), with the remainder living in brick houses.

The rates of poverty, unemployment, crime and sexual violence, are alarming. Full-time employment is very low, especially for women, with only 17% stating they are in full-time employment while approximately 45% are unemployed. Among men, an estimated 33% are considered to have full-time employment and about 27% are unemployed. A significantly higher proportion of women (63%) than men (45%) depend on their family and friends as the main source of financial support. The functioning of the family unit is vulnerable as most families carry the burden of looking after members of the extended family such as abandoned / orphaned children or grandparents.

Khayelitsha carries one of the highest burdens of both HIV and tuberculosis (TB) in the country. An estimated 20% of the total population are HIV infected with 1,000 new cases reported monthly. Accompanying the enormous AIDS epidemic in Khayelitsha is an equally alarming TB crisis. The TB incidence is more than 1,400/100,000 per year (26% of all Metro TB cases), and TB/HIV co-infection is close to 70%, making Khayelitsha one of the highest TB burden settings in the world.

Here we can see how poverty, illness, lack of knowledge, poor infrastructure, eroding of morals and deterioration of the family unit leaves our communities and their people in dire circumstances. Ikhaya Le Themba endeavours to partner with these communities to equip their members to care for vulnerable families through community development programs.

How We Started Out

This incredible ministry was birthed in 2003, when God revealed his purpose and plan in visions to Theresa and Ian. He planted a mission in their hearts to empower communities, throughout Southern Africa, to take care of the terminally and chronically ill and to deal with the implications of illness and death.

The call was not only to meet physical needs, but spiritual, economic and social as well. What started out as Home Based Care, soon developed into caring for grannies, orphans and vulnerable children, wellness support groups, micro-business programs for recovering patients, soup kitchens and enterprise development initiatives.

A testimony by Ian & Tess Richardson:

“In the beginning there were no funds. All we had was the contents of our home and our personal resources. And so we trained up local people from the townships, equipping them to take care of patients within their communities. Our model of Home Based Care was different to most others because our focus was on serving God and the ripple effect of that was serving others. Our volunteer workers “laid down their lives” by washing the feet of the needy, both literally and symbolically.

Over the years God has revealed His mercy, grace and miracle healing power, His heart for reconciliation and His anger towards injustice. God has taken care of our personal needs. None of us have ever gone hungry we are well clothed and live in safe and comfortable homes. As we have stepped out in faith in His miraculous power to provide, God has supplied our financial needs.

Today we are still witnessing miracles, healings and salvations amongst the people we work with. We continually see many of them discipled into beautiful ambassadors of Jesus Christ here on earth. We work in full partnership with a local church and facilitate the influx of volunteers from all the congregations, as well as the public, who want to serve and minister to the poor.

God continues to provide for us. And we continue to serve Him, through serving people, wholeheartedly.”

Grant Banwell Chairman of Ikhaya Le Themba Board Grant is the Chairman of the ILT Board. He also serves as a Directing Elder of a local church and a Director of the Four12 global partnership of churches. Grant considers it a privilege to be the Chairman and to work with the incredible team that God has blessed the organisation with. He has a deep love for people and for God and believes that it is through faithfulness to both that the nation can be changed. Before Grant got called into serving the Lord full-time, he was a Director of an architectural practice. He is married to his childhood sweetheart Kim and they have four children, Claudia, Hannah, Judah and Jedidiah. Lon Whelan Community Development Director Lon and Ann-Margaret Whelan are originally from San Clemente, California. While on outreach, one of the JoshGen church ministries, Ikhaya Le Themba (meaning Home of Hope), invited Lon on a trip to a township called Khayelitsha. The scope of poverty and poor living conditions of the community left Lon feeling like there was more that could be done. The years that followed included financing many Ikhaya Le Themba projects, fundraising in the USA on their behalf, and outreach trips to physically help with whatever was required. South Africa had become more than just an outreach— it was a passion. In 2017, Lon and Ann-Margaret decided to lay down their lives in the USA and relocate to South Africa. They have immersed themselves in the culture and lives of the South African people and become full-time volunteers for Ikhaya Le Themba. Due to the long-standing role that Lon has played in the organisation we brought him on as Community Development Director, he has always carried the heart and vision of the organization. He will be working hands-on with the team. His ‘think big’ perspective has blown wind in Ikhaya Le Themba’s sails. Ian Richardson Director and Development Manager Together with his wife Theresa, Ian is one of the founding members and directors of ILT. For Ian, working in different communities and with people of diverse cultures, brings many challenges but even more wonderful rewards. Through ILT, Ian has seen lives transformed and hope and joy brought to many. As ILT’s Development Manager, Ian is responsible for ensuring that the organisation operates according to the “plumb line”. His passion is to help people in their understanding of scripture and to experience God as they put their newly acquired skills to work helping others and building strong communities. Ian spent 22 years in the Engineering Design / Quality Assurance / Research & Development industry. Before becoming involved with ILT, he was self-employed practicing architectural design and building project management.

Community Development

Our Community Development ministry is about meeting the needs of the poor through selfless love and service. It is the foundation for everything we do. We believe that “what we do for the least of people, we do for Jesus” Mat 25:40

Home Based Care

Our Home Based Care initiative came out of seeing the effects of sickness, especially HIV and TB withinthe poorer communities. A fear of disease prevents the family members of the sick from caring for the patients. A sick person would often be hidden away in the back of a shack, in the dark, malnourished, hopeless and alone. Our Carers strive to bring back hope and joy to the home, providing basic medical care and showing love. They teach the families to care for their sick and needy, as well as providing nutrition, rehabilitation, prayer and discipleship. The aim is to bring both physical and spiritual healing within a family. We continue to see many miracles, with patients restored to health and given new life in Jesus. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.” Mark 10:45

Gogo Group

The Gogo Groups (Gogo means “granny” in Xhosa) that we run once a week in Khayelitsha help older community members to interact and share their burdens. Often these ladies are breadwinners and caretakers of their families and they have heavy loads to carry. ILT ensures that we support their physical, as well as their emotional needs by sharing the word of God, creating unity and fellowship, as well as providing a platform for counselling and building stronger relationships within the community. “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.” Proverbs 31:26

Caring For the Carer

Many of our Home Based Carers witness traumatising events when caring for their patients. Cases of sexual abuse, violence and aggression are difficult for them to process. Our Care for the Carer Group provides an intimate support system that they need to voice and deal with these traumatic experiences. The Carers are able to share their feelings and thoughts with others who have been through similar experiences, relieving their burdens and processing it together. Wealso use this time to encourage our Carers through Scripture, strengthening them for whatever lies ahead. “God, who comforts us in our entire affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3 – 4

Community Storehouse

Our Community Pantry initiative originated out of the work with the Home Based Care patients, who needed more than just wound dressings and physical rehabilitation. Through it, we focus on “whole patient” care, seeing to the household and nutritional needs of the patients, as well as their families. Regular distribution of donations to those who are physically unable to help themselves and are vulnerable to starvation and malnutrition form a big part of this project. The Community Pantry distributes donations from Woolworths and Debonairs, as well as Hungry Tummy packs which are able to feed a family of 5. We also maintain and repair the shacks of community members where necessary, and help to dispense excess household goods that are donated to the Thrift Store.

Page 13 of 21 Corporate Profile 20/06/2018

The Soup Kitchen provides soup for the patients and others in need on a daily basis and a meal for the Granny Group at their weekly support meetings. “We must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35

Community Maintenance

Cape Town is known for cold winter rain and storms. Many of the families we serve in Khayelitsha live in shacks and poorly built homes. The rainy season leaves these people with wet living conditions that have a severe impact on their wellbeing.

At the beginning of each year we plan to meet a practical need by ensuring that their homes are reasonably safe, dry and secure. This event serves as an opportunity to pass on skills to locals, get volunteers involved and to build strong relationships in the community.

Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC)

Our work with the orphans and vulnerable children originated out of the work with the Home Based Care patients, whose children were often left vulnerable in the instance of their death. We saw a need in the children - who required more care and extra support, both practical and spiritual. We believe that “religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained from the world” James 1: 27. Our program consists of three levels of care:

Children’s Ministry

Our regular playdates take place on a Saturday morning at Yomelela Primary School in Khayelitsha where we host fun events for the orphans and vulnerable children from the community. These Playdates help to uplift the children by instilling Godly values through Biblical lessons, prayer time, puppet shows and the learning of memory verses in a safe environment. The children also receive a light snack making sure their tummies and hearts are full when they return home. This has

Page 15: ILT Organisation Profile 20 06 2018...20/06/2018 Corporate Profile Page 4 of 21 Our Vision Ikhaya Le Themba is a biblically based organisation bringing hope and love to the poor and

Page 14 of 21 Corporate Profile 20/06/2018

become a joyous time of fun, fellowship and laughter for both the children and volunteers. At the end of every year we finish up with a much-anticipated Christmas party, a time of incredible celebration for the children. Volunteers and sponsors are invited to come and visit the children on the Playdates.

Youth Ministry

On Friday afternoons we spend time with our youth and OVC leaders, discipling and mentoring them, imparting good leadership skills. Life lessons are communicated through testimonies, training and games. This group consists of high school children from the community, 13 years and upwards but occasionally more mature younger children from the play date are invited. This is an excellent bridging time for the children from the play dates into becoming part of the youth whilst still attending the play dates. They are consistently discipled and trained up to help them cope with life’s challenges. Many of the teenagers who have grown up as part of the ILT youth, gain a sense of belonging which transforms their lives. The program has instilled good values, allowed friendships to form and built confidence in our youth. “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Prov 22:6

Holiday Clubs

Holiday Clubs run twice a year for our children, where we strive to provide a level of protection and instil Godly values. These programs provide practical relief from the harsh township realities and offer the children uplifting and encouraging activities such as soccer and netball games in which to participate.

During these times they experience God’s love and purpose for them, through Bible stories, practical lessons, fun times and fellowship with the other children and volunteers. You are welcome to come along as a volunteer and help to make these events even more enjoyable for the children!

OVC Care

The carers identify children who are especially vulnerable and visit them in their homes. The carers interact with the children one on one to ensure that their basic needs are met. We provide these children with food parcels, clothes and rudimentary back to school items. We also refer special needs to the community multidisciplinary team such as Social Workers, Day Hospitals, Dental Clinics, schools etc.

Skills Development

Skills Training is a vital and initial part of helping communities to develop themselves. Through practical seminars and workshops we train up groups of men and women to develop new skills and incorporate Biblical principles into work and life. All our training material is based on up-to-date learning methods on the given subjects, and relevant Scriptural precepts. We believe that by combining these elements, we are not only teaching people the necessary hands-on skills, but also the heart attitude that will enable them to follow through, and make a difference in

the real world.

Home Based Care Training

Our Home Based Care Training provides practical knowledge to enable communities to care for their own at ground level. We teach simple home based care principles, such as wound dressing, physical rehabilitation, nutrition and hygiene; training in a way that enables learners’ to operate independently. The training is Biblically based, sharing the heart of servanthood and discipleship. In this way, truths that are taught are spread into the communities our Carers serve, as they love and look after each patient, whilst providing them with practical help. Our training manual is in Xhosa and English and we are part of the Home Based Care Forum of Khayelitsha, which sets the standards and policies we adhere to. It also gives us great pleasure to conduct “Outreach Training”, where we travel further afield to Namibia, Zimbabwe and the Eastern Cape to help others start their own home based care programs.

“Let your work be shown to your servants, and your glorious power to their children. Let the favour of the Lord be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes establish the work of our hands!” Psalm 90: 16-17

HIV Awareness

This course usually follows on from Home Based Care training but can be used in isolation. This training imparts truth about HIV that counteracts fear and marginalisation of persons affected or infected by the virus. It gives candidates a basic understanding of the nature of the disease, a guideline for a healthy lifestyle as well as scriptural truth to encourage and bring hope to those affected/infected by HIV.

Good Nutrition

We engage the Department of Health to conduct annual Basic Nutrition training for our Community Health Workers. These guidelines equip individuals to make good nutritional choices and assists with meal plans. ILT promotes these guidelines throughout the year at support groups and play dates.

Masifunde

Is a biblically based programme that empowers Teachers, Classroom Assistants and parents to work together to help ensure that children with learning/behavioural challenges remain in their main stream grades. The programme gives an overview of FAS, skills on techniques used to promote learning and how to address/handle behavioural problems.

Class Room Assistants play a vital role in the development of the children as they reinforce what is taught in the classroom on an individual basis with identified children.

The Co-ordinator will also be responsible for doing home visits to assess the social needs of the family and to engage with parents/caregivers to assist the child in the home environment. Support groups for parents/caregivers would be implemented to encourage understanding, skills and participation

OVC Care

The vulnerable children identified through Masifunde and ILT projects need additional care and support. OVC Care Skills Training empowers communities to assist families to meet the physical and spiritual needs of Orphans and Vulnerable Children in their care. The training is focused on Home Assessment, Care Plans and meeting practical needs of the children. Ikhaya Le Themba will train designated Carers to implement the OVC Care aspect of Masifunde and ILT as an organisation. The initial training will be presented over 3 days followed by quarterly training times as required.

Resilient Kids

The majority of children and their families have experienced loss and trauma in their lives. Resilient Kids training creates an awareness of the socio/psyco needs of vulnerable children in the community and provides tools to begin addressing the needs. This training will empower Carers to mentor children and their families with confidence. Swimming and Music

These programmes will see communities positively impacted through the personal development of children by engaging them in swimming / music activities. These programmes will improve the fine and gross motor skills of the children; build their confidence and self-worth; their cognitive status, social skills and swimming/music skills. The programmes will run during school hours by skilled trainers.

Business Training and Development

Epic Solutions business training is a simulation based business skills development tool masquerading as a game that simulates real market conditions and business scenarios in the training room. The training modules include basic business cycle, managing cash flow, basic record keeping, supply and demand, pricing products, sale techniques, marketing, business plans, building strong relationships, production and diversification.

Workplace Readiness Programme

This programme is aimed at preparing youth/adults for the workplace and focuses on Life Skills. The training helps to promote self encouragement teaches how to apply in writing for a job, interacting on the telephone, how to prepare and conduct yourself in an interview, write a covering letter, how to write a CV and most importantly work place ethics!

Urban Farming

ILT engages with academically challenged students from Yomelela Primary School to impart growing and selling skills through our “Urban Farming” training.

Each student is allocated 10 crates to “farm”. The ILT garden team teaches the students how to grow, care for and harvest vegetables using our “Food Pod Manual”. The students can choose to “sell” their vegetables to our Thrift Store for tokens or they are allowed to take the vegetables home.

The students are then invited to take part in a Garden Competition where they receive a “start-up” kit to grow vegetables at their homes in the township. Photographs of each garden are taken and the winner is announced at a special ceremony celebrating the duplicated skills.

Enterprise Development

We believe that empowering people to start their own community businesses is an effective way of alleviating poverty for the long term. Work is an essential part of life, giving unemployed folk opportunities to provide for themselves and others. Work is God-given, and working hard is part of being a disciple of Jesus. We have seen many people standing taller after acquiring a skill and starting to earn an income – making them able to share and uplift others within their community and families.

Thrift Store

ILT has partnered with WNS to run a recycling depot in Khayelitsha where community members are encouraged to collect plastic and exchange it for tokens that can be used in our Thrift store. We provide a collection and sorting point for communities to hand in plastic refuse for recycling. Tokens are handed out for the value of the plastic collected and can then be spent at the Thrift Store. Our Thrift Store has a collection of clothing and household items donated mostly by members of the public and sell for as little as R2.

Khayelitsha Gardens

The Community Enterprise Development Garden began as a way to help community members provide food for themselves, their families and fresh produce for our Soup Kitchen. It has grown into an amazing ministry where the micro-greens have earned praise from top hotels and restaurants in and around Cape Town, as well as regular consignments to 2 City Lodge hotels. The program mentors individuals in gardening and business skills with a biblical view on “How does God see work”; we have seen how the gardens give a sense of self-worth to those involved. It has opened up opportunities to people previously unemployed to earn an income and provide for their families. A learnership program was also started with the grade 4 learners from Yomelela Primary School.

Indalo

Indalo is the manufacturer/producer and distributer/supplier of local, natural and wholesome products and produce; from the local community to the local community. It is an exciting project as we have seen it grow into a registered business – Indalo Natural Local Together (Pty) Ltd. The two main “channels” at the moment are Indalo Skin Care and Indalo Micro-greens. Both are profit generating business models which provide an income for the local community members. The Indalo Skin Care ranges are all 100% natural, chemical and colourant free beauty products. These were originally developed to help patients who were suffering from skin conditions while bed ridden. We quickly discovered the healing benefits of the products and now have a range of 13 items including a baby and sensitive skin range.

Indalo Micro-greens was a branch off the Community Gardens, the quality of produce that was being grown earned the praise of top restaurants in Cape Town. We developed a business model whereby we were able to appoint full time gardeners to produce top quality micro-greens that could be sold.

Wish List for 2018

Two of our greatest desires is to see a “Community Centre” in Khayelitsha and a “Skills School” at our property in Wellington. This will enable us to consolidate our operations and have a central base from which to operate.
