The City of BabylonBabylon, a city in modern-day Iraq, originated during the time of ancient Mesopotamia. The city of Babylon appears in many books of the Bible: Daniel, Jeremiah, Isaiah, and others, and is also related to the story of the Tower of Babel.

One of the city’s biblical links is to the prophet Daniel who lived the majority of his life in Babylon. As a noble Jewish youth of Jerusalem, Daniel was taken into captivity along with many others by Nebuchadnezzar’s government after Jerusalem had been attacked and conquered.

Daniel served King Nebuchadnezzar and his successors all of his life while remaining true to the God of Israel.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Another famous site was the Ishtar Gate (a reconstruction of this gate can be seen in a museum in Berlin).

Read more about Daniel in the book of Daniel, chapter 1.
