Who We Are

Association’s Goals

www.who.org

We are a group of Jordanian citizens concerned about the risks of second-hand smoking and tobacco addiction in general in our society. We demand the Jordanian government protects our right to breathe clean air free of tobacco toxins and strictly implements Public Health Law no 47 provisions. We have joined forces to raise awareness on the harmful effects of tobacco, based on the following facts, because we firmly believe in the need to provide our children with a better future: • Over 6 million people die annually as a result of tobacco

related causes • 50% of cancer cases are caused by tobacco • Tobacco is the main cause of preventable deaths • 20% of children in Jordan smoke their first cigarette before

they reach the age of 10

Let,s work together for a Tobacco Free Jordan!

Facts on the Tobacco EpidemicThe tobacco epidemic kills nearly 6 million people a year, this includes more than 600,000 nonsmokers who will die from exposure to tobacco smoke. They die from cancer, heart disease, asthma and other illnesses. Unchecked, that number will increase to more than eight million a year by 2030. Tobacco use is a risk factor for six of the eight leading causes of deaths in the world. Tragically, the epidemic is shifting towards the developing world, where more than 80% of tobacco-related deaths will occur within a few decades. Facts on Second-Hand Smoke• Guidelines to Article 8 of the WHO Framework Convention

on Tobacco Control state that there is “no safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke”. Creating 100% smoke-free environments is the only way to protect people from the harmful effects of second-hand tobacco smoke.

• Second-hand smoke causes 600 000 premature deaths per year. There are more than 4000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, of which at least 250 are known to be harmful and more than 50 are known to cause cancer.

• In adults, second-hand smoke causes serious cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, including coronary heart disease and lung cancer. In infants, it causes sudden death. In pregnant women, it causes low birth weight.

• About 40% of all children are regularly exposed to second-hand smoke at home. Thirty-one per cent of the deaths attributable to second-hand smoke occur in children.

Effects of Passive Smoking on Children

Embryo • Weight of the newborn is less and their lungs are smaller• Higher incidence of asthma symptoms in early childhood• Increased response of airways to smoke, and airways los their

flexibility and increase their resistance to the passage of air

Infants Under One Year • Increased symptoms of asthma • Increased irritation of airways and lungs• Increased risk of sudden death

Children • More susceptible to asthma affliction, respiratory and middle

ear infection diseases • More severe asthma symptoms among those afflicted with

asthma • Delayed lung growth

How will I benefit when I stop smoking?• Reduce the risk of illnesses, sexual impotence or death that may

arise from cancer, heart and lung disease or peripheral vascular diseases that may lead, for example to organ amputation

• Protect the health of those around you by not exposing them to involuntary smoke

• Improve your level of fertility and thus safe pregnancy and health children

• Improve overall breathing and fitness • Better enjoyment of food tastes

• Raise health awareness and enhance the implementation of Public Health Law no 47 of 2008

• Cooperate with government entities to implement and amend the legislation prohibiting the consumption of tobacco in closed public places

• Raise health awareness on the harmful effects of smoking and second hand smoke

• Conduct activities, programs and competitions aimed at raising awareness among children specifically and society in general on the harmful effects of smoking

• Cooperate with local and international entities in raising health awareness
