Scotland is the European country with the highest biodiversity due to its large wild lands: large colonies of sea
birds, herds of stags, solitary otters… the Highlands have this special thing that moves everyone going there.
Scotland combines immense desert lands with mild temperatures thanks to the Atlantic Ocean. The result is a
unique place where forest moor, and animals can develop freely. A paradise for wilderness lovers.
This guide offers multiple hints to discover the country in many ways – walk, ride, mountain bike, boat – and
gives the reader a wide range of activities to explore all what Scotland’s nature has to offer.

A reference book to discover wild bees and act for their survey.
We have already talked a lot about domesticated bees, their decline and its consequences, many books have
been published on the theme. But domesticated bees which supply us with honey, propolis and royal jelly only
represent one species among hundreds of other insects that pollinate the plants. Plants that are at the beginning
of our products of daily consumption or that help to treat ourselves. Among these insects, the wild bees –
approximatively 20,000 species on the world level and 1,000 in France – are in the lime light but also in decline.
In the first place, this book offers to discover the great diversity of our wild bees thanks to accessible texts and
beautiful pictures showing them in their environment and in different life-cycle stages.
In the second place, there are practical advices to apply in order to help the wild bees’ population in the garden
or the balcony.
------------------------- Nicolas Vereecken studied Agricultural Sciences in Liège. Now, he has a Phd in Biological Sciences and is currently working on “Floral scents or orchids and pollinator behavior” until 2018. He is also an assistant professor at Brussels University. Thanks to his exceptional career he is able to write clear publications to people who don’t know a thing about biology or bees…

A reference book about sea turtles on a global scale
There are only seven species of sea turtles in the world, all of them are threatened. Not only are they
overexploited by men, but they also endure most of the pressures applied by them on the marine environment,
from the coast to the open sea: urbanization, overfishing, collisions, pollution, plastic accumulation... For the first
time in their long history, at the dawn of a mass extinction of animal species, they might not survive the deep
mutations going on.
Turtles appeared 110 million years ago, long before humans. These great travelers populate the entire ocean,
except for the Arctic. Symbols of wisdom and longevity, they have fascinated many civilizations. Their odyssey
remains mysterious, and their life cycle keeps its grey area.
Improving our knowledge about them, preserving their habitats through strong protective measures at an
international level are the only ways to save these fascinating animals before it's too late.
------------------------- Robert Calcagno is the managing director of the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco and directs the
Oceanographic Museum of Monaco and the Oceans House in Paris. Involved in the protection of the oceans, he
officiated as Monaco’s Minister of the Environment between 2006 and 2009. His experience led him today to
organize and to present regularly international meetings with the aim of mobilizing the political and socio-
economic actors and to create synergies with the scientific community. His main themes are protected marine
areas, the protection of sharks and the preservation of the deep seas. He is the author of several natural history
books.

In the digital age when it is easier than ever to create and distribute images, it is nice to remind oneself that
one hundred and fifty years ago it took time and effort to take a photograph and which documental value it
had. La Société de géographie, founded in 1821, has today one of the richest photo collections.
Photography, a product of the industrial age, allowed to document and understand this new economical
geography that emerged in the middle of the nineteenth century. The photographer is witness of a changing
world while equally being a part of it himself. He is driven by a passion to seek out and document as precisely
as possible. But photography was never objective: Every photo tells us also a story about the point of view of
the photographer, his perspective on the world and ideologies.
This book covers a changing world from 1850 to 1914 through the eyes of photographers. It is structured by
the different geographical zones (Africa, Amercia, Europa, Asia and Oceania). Highly enriched with
photographs, this book dives deep into the cultures and lands of different times and places – and into the
understanding of the first photographing explorators!
------------------------- Olivier Loiseaux is Head of the France’s National Library’s acquisition service and of the geographical collection.
Gilles Fumey is a specialist in cultural geography and a member of the société de géographie.

OCEANS OF PAPER NEW 2017 EDITIONS A history of maritime maps, from ancient journeys to GPS

For the first time, here is an illustrated book on the world history of maritime maps.
It contains beautiful, evocative documents. With an exceptional format (265 x 365 mm) and quality paper and
finishing, this book offers a spectacular tour for all map, journey and history amateurs. The image of our planet
and its surprising maritime puzzle has grown throughout the centuries, thanks to scientific discoveries.
From hazy and erroneous drawings of oceans, we have progressively gone to a precise visualization, not only of
the outlines, but of each little detail in depth. The history of this evolution is fascinating, because each step has
been an adventure, and because techniques have evolved at the same time as men discovered seas, lands and
oceans.
From the first guided crossings by approximate portolan charts to the discovery of longitude, from the invention
of the chronometer to the most sophisticated GPS systems, this much documented, richly illustrated book tells
of the discovery of seas and of our planet’s cartography. It is filled with the most beautiful marine maps.
Amateurs can thus go into depth and go into very precise detail. A human adventure many times millennial, a
technical revolution at a world scale, an impressive book for our eyes. The most beautiful pictures of marine
maps, from Antiquity to today thanks to an exceptional iconography taken from the collection of the Bibliothèque
nationale de France.
------------------------- Journalist and navigator, Olivier Le Carrer has crossed most of the seas of the world for thirty years. He was for
a long time in charge of the review Bateaux, a monthly reference for sailing amateurs, and has written several
technical and historical books on navigation. Passionate of the history of cartography, he regularly leaves the sea
air to explore archives in the hope of finding exclusive information. He has just created in Brittany the first library
entirely dedicated to the maritime adventure. He has written L’Atlas Essentiel, published by Glénat in November
2008.

The departure of the Vendée Globe is an adventure. To arrive safe and sound is a feat.
Out of twenty-nine competitors, only eighteen have crossed the finish line of the Vendée Globe 2016-2017 and
Fabrice Amedeo is one of them. A superb performance for the one who, less than two years ago, took the subway
every day to go to the editorial staff of Figaro.
“I went to the Vendée Globe and I went to look for it by the force of my wrists: finding partners, setting up my
business, buying a boat, learning how to sail in IMOCA, getting physically prepared, learning how to repair my
boat... Being at the start of this race was in itself a victory. But the biggest part was about to come. A personal
Everest, 27,000 nautical miles solo around the globe.”
An Everest that reveals itself only in the light of experience, consisting of stages and trials to be overcome: the
first night at sea, the passage of Ecuador, the storms, Cape Horn, failures and damages, cold, icebergs, fear,
loneliness, exhaustion, hunger... A real assault course of several months, fortunately marked with moments
which beauty is increased by the intensity of the adventure. With his lively writing style, Fabrice Amedeo takes
us in his wake, the one from a happy man at sea who has overcame his Everest.
------------------------- Skipper and journalist, Fabrice Amedeo finished 11th in the Vendée Globe 2016-2017. Fabrice worked eleven
years at Le Figaro and participated in nine trans-Atlantic races, including two Route du Rhum and two Transat
Jacques-Vabre. He published six books, including Capturer le large in 2016 and 10e Route du Rhum, les héros de
l’Atlantique, published by Glénat, the official book of the Route du Rhum 2014.

In 2017, the Sea Shepherd association founded by the captain Paul Watson celebrates its forty years. Forty
years of relentless struggle for the preservation of the oceans. Forty years on the front line.
A price put on his head by the Taiwanese mafia, his name placed on the Red notice of Interpol following the
arrest warrants launched by Costa Rica and Japan, an arrest in Germany…some of the events that punctuated
the turbulent life of Paul Watson in the last five years. Idolized by some, considered ecoterrorist by others, he
found refuge for two years in France. An exile during which he testified relentlessly of the actions of Sea Shepherd,
participated in the COP21 and written a manifesto with the eloquent title, Urgence ! Si l’océan meurt nous
mourrons (Glénat, 2016). Seeking to destroy the association, Japan has achieved only one thing, reinforcing the
determination of the captain and his crew: since the arrest of Paul Watson in Frankfurt in 2012, Sea Shepherd
has never led so much missions and some of the most important campaigns have been launched. “Operation
Zero Tolerance” to send home whalers in Antarctica, “Grind Stop” to stop the slaughter of pilot whales in the
Faroe Islands, “Icefish” campaign to dismantle poachers in the Autral Ocean, “Anti-captivity” to put an end to
the imprisonment of animals in water parks... Sea Shepherd, a.k.a. the shepherd of the sea, is probably the most
combative ocean defense organization in the world and intends to remain so.
Forty years, the age of maturity? The opportunity to come back to the creation of Sea Shepherd, its evolution
and future prospects, but also the vision of Paul Watson on his stay in France, the COP21 or the election of Donald
Trump. The occasion also for Lamya Essemlali to tell the creation of the French branch of Sea Shepherd in 2006
with just a carton of tee-shirts as endowment! A French branch that is today one of the main entities on an
international scale. On the front line.
------------------------- Lamya Essemlali joined the Sea Shepherd team in 2005 after meeting the captain Watson in Paris. Co-founder
of Sea Shepherd France in 2006, she became president in June 2008. She has participated in seven offshore
campaigns, four of which she coordinated by Watson's side. She is also his interpreter during his travels and
public lectures in France. In 2012, she published Capitaine Paul Watson, entretien avec un pirate at Glénat.
Born in 1950, the Canadian Paul Watson devoted his life to the protection of underwater life. Co-founder of
Greenpeace in 1969, he founded Sea Shepherd in 1977. Qualified as one of the greatest environmental heroes
of the 20th century by Times Magazine, he is also considered as a pirate or “ecoterrorist” by some.

HENRY DE MONFREID,
IMPOSSIBLE GRANDFATHER
Guillaume de Monfreid
528 colour pages
140 x 225 mm
Softcover
Retail price in France: 22.00 €
150,000 words
May 2017
To discover the powerful relationship between a grandson and his outstanding grandfather, this is the long-
time travel, not always restful, offered by Guillaume de Monfreid. An important biography with its graceful
moments and its dramas, fed with a great tenderness to the work and a wide exploration of family memories.
August 1958, Reunion Island, Henry de Monfreid (1879-1974), who has told his adventurous life on the Red Sea
and in the Horn of Africa through more than seventy books, has been declared missing in the Indian Ocean at
almost eighty years old.
Guillaume is eight, he has grown up near the water and his island is his whole universe. Here starts the discovery
of an unusual grand-father far away from the Epinal engraving. Here starts also a series of coincidences which
will link these two characters through a shared faith. Strange faiths. Guillaume, even if he doesn’t want to, follows
the steps of Henry. Each time, he is facing his complex, unrealistic, free, unpredictable, unmanageable
personality. Guillaume has painted the portrait of a living, intimate, restless Henry despite his failures. He reveals,
through an unpublished correspondence, some questions we wouldn’t even suspect, as well as Henry’s
storyteller art, inimitable. He also reveals a subversive “monfreidish lexical”, not to be put in every hand.
This passionate text is completed by Guillaume’s drawings, as well as a long chronology, one of a kind, that aims
to settle the numerous events of Henry’s eighty-five years-long life and beyond (1854-1976) and rectifies some
mistakes published here or there.
------------------------- Born in the middle of the 20th century, Guillaume de Monfreid has inherited his grandfather’s love for the sea,
the painting, and the drawing. He has practiced his job of architect-urbanist in France and other latitudes (Africa,
Middle-East, Asia). He has shown his work as a painter in private galleries and at the Marine exhibition. Fallen in
love with La Hague, he dedicated it several books to it: Normandie extrême (Isoète, 2006), Vagues – la mer dans
tout ses états (Glénat, 2013). He defends and manages the work of his grandfather and has consecrated him a
first book: Sur les pas de Henry de Monfreid (Presses de la Renaissance, 2007).

Welcome to the world of excessiveness, beauty, breathtaking scenes, unbelievable achievements.
The most talented photographers in the world (Sam Bié, Simon Carter, Jimmy Chin, Dom Daher,
Monica Dalmasso, Alexandre Deschaumes, Olivier Grunewald, Christian Pondella, Scott Serfas, Ben
Tibbetts, Pascal Tournaire...) have selected their most spectacular mountain photos. Images
commented and highlighted by the journalist and alpinist Guillaume Vallot. Solo in a wall of 900 meters,
lost in the volutes of the altitude, in balance on a ridge or on the thin thread of a highline, in a snow
slope or a corridor made of ice... the spectacle of the mountain is everywhere. And even in the simple
contemplation of a shining light illuminating, like a celestial projector, an emerald lake. Through the
pages of Spectacular Mountain, we have crystals of snow in the face, fingers trying to grab onto an
imaginary hold, the fear in our stomach sometimes and, always, we are speachless in front of the
beauty of the spectacle that is offered in our eyes.
------------------------- Polymorphous player of mountain sports, Guillaume Vallot has been living in the Queyras since 2006, when he
founded a small publishing house specializing in mountain guides and books: visotopo.com. On the move since
two decades, this qualified climbing instructor travels the world and brought back photos, stories and videos.
Between two articles, two works and two expeditions on the top of Himalayas, Greenland or South America, he
spent his spare time sailing on sailboats. He also left his mark in a few books, notably Cascades in Queyras - Pays
du Viso (Viso, 2013) or Escalades en Queyras - Pays du Viso (2016).

ALPINISM From the first steps to great climbs
J-F. Hagenmuller F. Marsigny F. Pallandre
144 colour pages Hardcover 175 x 248 mm 19000 Words May 2016 Price in France: 22 €
A reference book for all climbers written by three mountain guides and teachers at the ENSA, the French National School for Ski and Alpinism Guides. First, the different types of routes are explained and described: rocks, snow, mix of both… Then a dozen of major routes that the authors have done just for this book are explained: techniques according to the terrain, several difficulty levels, many illustrations and photos. From easy routes on snow or rocks, the level of difficulty progressively rises to reach difficult adventures with crest and ridges, pillars and ice climbing. This is a very practical, lively and highly illustrated book rather than a mere theoretical reference book.
--------------------------------------------------- Jean-François Hagenmuller was a mountain guide since 1984 and Mountain Guide teacher at the ENSA since
1985. Great traveler, he climbed walls in India, Sahara and many great walls from the Yosemite. Jean-François
Hagenmuller is also a renowned photographer. He wrote and illustrated many books on Mountaineering and
Alpinism. Jean-François Hagenmuller tragically died in June 2016 before the release of this book.
François Marsigny is a trained architect and a Mountain Guide since 1989. He is a Mountain Guide Teacher at
the ENSA since 1998 and is still today a member of the Compagnie des Guides of Chamonix. Passionate about
mixt and ice climbing, he has climbed in many placed of the Mont Blanc range as well as in Patagonia and
Himalaya where he climbed the Cho Oyu and the Makalu.
François Pallandre is a mountain guide since 1990 and Mountain Guide teacher at the ENSA since 1996. He
climbed on the 7 continents from Kirghistan’s big walls to many places in the USA. He reached the summit of
Mount Everest and explored the deserts of Oman and Jordania. He premiered several rocky routes in the Alps.

September 2013

The chronicles of the origins, life, and terroir of a family of Burgundy vintners as told by a young man’s conversations with his grandfather.
Fred Bernard’s graphic novel tells his tale through the eyes and experiences of his ninety year old grandfather who was born into the business and dedicated his life to Burgundian wines. It is an enlightening story of land, ancestry, passion and family inheritance.
A true "feel-good book" where the reader shares the author’s anecdotes of his grandfather's life and experiences as a Burgundian and member of this family of vintners.
The varieties of grapes and wines in the region, the labs where blends are made, war and resistance, the special relationship that the people have with their land and their wine, the changes that have taken place over the last century... all of this is described and told through illustrated short stories. This is not an academic work or technical hand book on wine but a journey through Burgundy, wine and wine families where the reader shares a lifestyle rather than learns a business.
------------------------- Fred Bernard was in born in Burgundy in 1969 to a family of vintners. His father and grandfather were wine makers. As the eldest son, he was meant to take over the business. But Fred’s passion is drawing and storytelling. He studied at the Emile Cohl School of Art and works as both a writer and an illustrator. The children’s books he has co-authored with François Rocca have won several awards including the Goncourt Prize for a children novel (1997). Fred Bernard also writes and illustrates graphic novels. He shares his time between Paris and Burgundy.

This book on wine is unlike most others: it focuses on an understanding of wine as an understanding the
societies that live in wine regions and the wine drinkers themselves. Therefore, the auther explores the history
of the region and its influence on the countryside, architecture and territory while similarly taking a global
perspective on wine. Explaining the quality of wine is only possible by understanding the societies that created
and shaped them. Wine is therefore a mirror that reflects the aspirations of the people in the surrounding
societies.

with a focus on globalisation and its consequences.

An internationally renowned wine and the oldest with an AOC (protected Designation of Origin).
What strikes a person entering the intimacy of this vineyard is, all around its village and its donjon, this
extraordinary diversity of landscapes and terroirs, a complex geometry that calls to mind. In this unique
landscape, 13 varieties of grapes offer a rich and unique wine.
This “geometric” dimension is omnipresent. First, the vertical: the history of the village, of the vineyard, all
leading to the new generation of winegrowers. Follows the horizontal: geography, geology, terroirs, cultural
practices, grape varieties, etc. Then come the diagonals, these little stories that make the Provencal
temperament: the village and the vineyard are full of anecdotes, a hostage-taking, a crazy vintner, Hannibal or
the descent of the northern winegrowers, etc. And to conclude with the “fourth dimension”: the conjunction of
these geometries, the tasting of these unique wines.
-------------------------
Jean-Charles Chapuzet is a historian, journalist and writer. He is the author of several books of eclectic inspiration, from thrillers to reference, via graphic novels. He teaches geopolitics and wine at the INSEEC and IDRAC schools.
Christophe Grilhé is an independent professional photographer who lives in the south of France. He has an
interest and a pronounced taste for viticulture and took part in the illustration of several wine books.

Hardcover

October 2017
Rediscover the Beatles' universe, together or solo, thanks to this collection of striking articles!
John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. The four musicians of Liverpool who
revolutionized pop music, let themselves be discovered in a new light thanks to the writing of Jérôme
Soligny.
Musician, journalist and writer, he presents a collection of articles published in Rock&Folk since 1992,
augmented and completed for the most part. On the occasion of multiple republications - the release
of remastered titles in 2009 or stereo vinyls in 2012 for example -, Jérôme Soligny offers a new lighting
of the Fab Four: their creation processes (writing, recording), their successes and disappointments,
their albums and films, the relationships between them and the influences of this emblematic group.
A fan in the noble sense of the term became real connoisseur, Jérôme Soligny is nevertheless
demanding and does not hesitate to disapprove a record, even if signed by Paul McCartney. Through
his articles, Jérôme Soligny come back, with passion, to the life and career of the group, as well as the
solo experiences of the four musicians. Invited to take part in a kaleidoscopic journey, the reader will
also discover or rediscover the personalities and universes of musicians and their "families": Paul
McCartney, Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, Olivia Harrison, George Martin, Jeff Lynne...
Seven chapters order the articles according to its subjects: The Beatles, John Lennon, Paul McCartney,
George Harrison, Ringo Starr, George Martin (producer and arranger), and Jeff Lynne & Electric Light
Orchestra. Finally, in the very rich section titled “Bonus Apparents”, Jérôme Soligny has gathered most
of the chronicles of CD, DVD or Blu-ray of the Beatles that he has written for twenty-five years.
-------------------------
Jérôme Soligny is a musician, composer, journalist, writer (Je suis mort il y a vingt-cinq ans, Writing On
The Edge, David Bowie ouvre le chien) and an editorial advisor to Rock&Folk since the mid-1990s.
In twenty-five years, he has written more than fifty articles on the Beatles, either as a band or
separately. Jérôme Soligny regularly interviewed three of the four Beatles (he was still a young
musician from Le Havre when John Lennon passed away) and his knowledge of the group's career led
him to be solicited by EMI, his historical record company, to work as a writer and consultant on many
projects including “LOVE, 09.09.09” and Paul McCartney's “Chaos And Creation In The Backyard” album.
A gold record was given to him by EMI in 2005 for his contribution to the success of this disk of
McCartney.

think of New-York, not Chicago or Los Angeles. New-York. Whether they call it Gotham or Metropolis, there is
the spirit of the Big Apple.”
Each chapter focuses on a location or a building and describes its history, how it has evolved and how comic
books have depicted it or used it a symbol. The city of New-York itself contributed to create super-heroes who
reflect in a way the city they live in. New York constitutes the historical and spiritual basis of all super-hero stories.
“My goal is to show New-York the same way it is in my head. As a New-Yorker and comic book reader, I expect
to see super heroes flying off buildings. This is what I want the reader to feel too. I want to show how New-York
helped creating these heroes”.

For the first time, 60 of the greatest artists in Art History respond to an imaginary, yet plausible, interview…
Raphaël, Gauguin, Renoir, Monet, Rembrandt, Da Vinci, Van Gogh… these artists talk about themselves, their life
and achievement, esthetical choices and anxieties with nostalgia, humor and sometimes mercilessness.
Smoother than an encyclopedia and easier to read than a dictionary, these interviews are historically correct and
even sometimes willingly slightly impertinent. Over 60 interviews, this book draws a complete portrait of Art
History from the 15th Century to contemporary paintings.
Examples of artists interviewed: Paul Cézanne (1839-1906), Gustave Courbet (1819-1877), Léonard De Vinci
(1452-1519), Eugène Delacroix (1789-1863), Amadeo Modigliani (1884-1920), Paul Klee (1879-1940), Piet
Mondrian (1872-1944), Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), Diego Vélazquez (1599-1660), Auguste Renoir (1841-1916)…

With her pens and pencils, Raphaèle Bernard-Bacot has settled down at the foot of the statue La Quintinie,
Louis XIV’s gardener, in the middle of pickings of the day and with the gardeners who maintain this exceptional
site.
During the different seasons and productions, she sketched forms and colors, activities and the mood of
Versaille’s Garden, in a logbook full of poetry, curiosity and mischief. She has transcribed her surprises, her
favorite discoveries, gardening facts and tips, and all the pieces of information gathered in her textbooks to share
with us.
Historical monument and integrated element of Versailles, the Garden is today handled by the “National School
of landscape”. It offers an inextinguishable show in a unique atmosphere. It presents a unique collection of old-
fashioned way fruit forms, does experiments on ancient, new, local, imported varieties of vegetables, tries out
the permaculture and creates an exceptional workshop for artistic and ecological lessons.
------------------------- Raphaèle Bernard-Bacot studied at the “Graphic Arts School” in Paris. Her first work was to paint dancers during
their shows before she met the person in charge of the Potager du Roi in Versailles’ castle. The variety of shapes,
curves and fragrances led her to a brand-new project: entering the very select Potager du Roi in Versailles Garden
to sketch the mood of the place.
