Preamble

A conference is not just about organization and registration, sessions and

meetings. Each conference is an event, in which people are actors.

The 17th AutoCarto Conference was the “mini - ICA conference” with an

attractive program and a great variety of sessions, meetings and actors.

The illustrated atlas ("Bildatlas" in German) “AutoCarto 2012: selected

photo-moments” is a semiotic model dominated by photographs.

This Bildatlas presents “quadruple photograph compositions” as selected

moments of the conference in Columbus.

I hope these atlas-related moments document and retain pleasant

reminiscences of the 17th AutoCarto Conference on September 16-18,

2012 in Columbus, Ohio, USA.

About author

Alexander Wolodtschenko, dr. dr. h.c. (born 1949) is

a graduate of the St. Petersburg University, Institute

of Cartography and Geodesy (1974); promotion at

the Dresden University of Technology, Department of

Cartography and Geodesy (1987).

He was Chairman of the ICA Commission on

Theoretical Cartography (1999-2003, 2003-2007

and 2007-2011).

Co-editor of the cartosemiotic issue 1998-2011

(together with H. Schlichtmann); co-editor of the

e_journal <meta-carto-semiotics.org> since 2008

(together with F. Hruby).

Author of 15 cartographic-semiotic monographs, five

illustrated mini-atlases and more than 300 diverse

articles.
