1Introduction

1.1Foreword

Conventionally in high end audio, people “mix and match” devices. Theymay use a DAC, an analog pre-amplifier, a phono stage, an equalizer, anda processor.

Illusonic Audio Processors integrate these functionalities - because they be-long together from a quality, technical, and usage perspective. The numberof signal transmissions and conversions (AD, DA, digital clock sync) areminimized.

Additionally, IAP 2 can calibrate each of its output channels with gain, delay,and parametric equalizers, to adapt to the room and loudspeaker positions.Depth/Immersion adds a new dimension to room adaptation, controlling spa-ciousness. The following pages give a more detailed overview over IAP 2’sfeatures.

1.3IAP 2 Overview

Inputs

IAP 2 can connect to a variety of sources. There is usually no need for adevice between the source and IAP 2. In addition to conventional analogand digital inputs, IAP 2 features a phono stage, USB audio, network mediarendering, and four HDMI inputs.

Outputs

IAP 2 features two symmetric XLR and corresponding two RCA line outputs,which directly connect to power amplifiers or active loudspeakers. Its HDMIoutput connects to a TV or projector, if needed.

Volume Control

In order to be able to connect directly to power amplifiers or active loud-speakers, IAP 2 features volume control, implemented digitally. Volume con-trol is applied just before the DACs using 32 bit floating point arithmetic,followed by a dithering process.


Room Equalization and Depth/ImmersionEach channel features gain, delay, and fully parametric equalizers. These areusually used to calibrate the system and for room equalization.

ImmersionDepthCalibration

Depth/Immersion adds a new dimension to adaptation of the sound systemto the room. The specific room, loudspeakers, and loudspeaker positionsdetermine how a room reacts to the sound. Depth/Immersion adds free-dom to modify the perceived spaciousness beyond these traditional physicalparameters.

Tone ControlWhile room equalization has the goal to mitigate dominant characteristics ofyour room, tone control is used to subjectively adjust the level of low andhigh frequencies. Not only bass and treble gain can be adjusted, but also thecorresponding frequencies.


SoftwaresThe latest versions of IAP Controller and IAP Calibration softwares can bedownloaded from the Illusonic web site. Both, Windows and OS X versionsare available. IAP Controller presents all IAP 2 parameters for comfortablesetup. IAP Calibration makes multi-point room measurement easy and helpssetting up calibration related parameters (channel gain/delay, equalizers).

Step 1:Unpacking

Unpack IAP 2. Store the packaging for future transportation. The packagecontains:

– IAP 2 unit

– AC power cable

– Remote control

– This user manual

2. Make sure that the main power switch on the back is set to off (0).

Connect audio and video devices to any of the above shown connectors:

1. HDMI sources, such as Blu-ray players, game consoles,and set top boxes.

2. Digital audio sources, such as CD players.

3. A PC or audio server over USB.

4. A network, PC, or audio server via Ethernet.

5. An analog audio source.

6. A turntable.

7. If you want to watch video, connect a TV or projector.1 1 If you use IAP 2 only for enjoying audio, then there isno need to connect a TV or projector. All necessaryinformation is shown on the built-in display.

4. Play sound with the selected input source.

5. Once you are done, push the rotary control for two seconds to putIAP 2 to standby.1

Advanced Setup

For reaching excellence of sound, it is often necessary to consider roomacoustics and to adapt IAP 2 to the room and loudspeakers:

– If necessary, acoustically treat your room.

– Calibrate the loudspeaker setup for your central listening position byapplying gain and delay trim to the loudspeaker signals (Chapter 5).1 1 When measuring your sound system, you can

reproduce sound over each output channel individuallyin the Measurement sub-menu (Chapter 7).

IAP Calibration software greatly facilitatesmeasurement and calibration of your system(Chapter 8).

– If desired, apply equalizers (Chapter 6) to the loudspeaker signals to:

– Attenuate overly strong low frequencies from loudspeakerspositioned near walls or corners.

– Attenuate room resonances.– Adapt the sound to the spectral response of the room.– Calibrate loudspeakers behind a video screen.

1. AC PowerBefore connecting a power cable here, make sure that the indicatedvoltage corresponds to your AC power voltage.1 1 Make sure to use 3 terminals (phase, neutral,

3. External Control (USB)With appropriate software, a personal computer can be used to controlIAP 2, read and write parameters, and update its firmware (Chapter 8).

These are two coax and two optical S/PDIF connectors for digital audiosources. Up to 96 kHz/24 bit audio over S/PDIF is supported.22 Note that Dolby Digital (AC-3) and DTS over S/PDIF

are not decoded by IAP 2.3. USB Audio

IAP 2’s USB audio input can be configured as USB Class 1 or USBClass 2 compliant (Chapter 4). Up to 192 kHz/24 bit audio over USBis supported.

4. NetworkIAP 2’s network input complies to the UPnPTMAV 2.0 / DLNA protocolas a Digital Media Renderer. Up to 192 kHz/24 bit audio over thenetwork is supported.

5. AnalogAnalog sources can be connected to this stereo RCAunbalanced/balanced input.33 The RCA connectors are buffered and acquired

differentially.6. Phono

A turntable with moving coil (MC) or moving magnet (MM) cartridge canbe directly connected to this RCA input with additional groundconnector (GND).

3.3Common Usage

In normal operation mode,1 the display shows the currently active Sound1 If you are not in normal operation mode, push Menu

for two seconds to return to normal operation mode. Settings (Preset), input source, and volume level. For example:

The normal operation mode states are changed as follows:

Volume is changed by using Rotary (Turn).

The Input Source is changed by using <>.

Push Select (Rotary Push) to enter Sound Settings,where you can select and change presets. Usage ofSound Settings is described in Section 3.4.

Push Menu to enter or exit Menu mode. Menu modeis described in Section 3.5. Push Menu for two sec-onds to return to normal operation mode from anyother state.


3.4Sound Settings (Presets)

As illustrated in the figure below, the Sound Settings (Presets) menu is en-tered by Rotary (Push). You can select a preset for the current input by using<>. The parameters of the selected preset are edited by choosing a sub-menu item by Rotary (Turn) and entering it for editing with Rotary (Push).

DepthDepth determines how much volume and depth is added. The otherwise flatsound stage becomes three-dimensional. Psychoacoustically, Depth relatesto “auditory source width” and physically it relates to early reflected sound.

ImmersionImmersion determines how much listeners are immersed into sound (in psy-choacoustic terminology “enveloped”). Physically, this setting relates to howstrong diffuse sound in the recording is reproduced.


BrillianceBy its default value, “Brilliance Off”, Immersion is created by concert hall typediffuse sound, extracted from the input signal. With Brilliance you can addmore excitement to it.

Tone ControlChoose Tone Control On to apply bass and treble. When Off, Tone Controlis bypassed and the parameters are not shown.

The figure on the left illustrates the menus of IAP 2. These are described indetail in the following chapters:

– Chapter 4 (Menu: Inputs)This menu contains all settings related to the Processor’s inputs.Inputs can be renamed, delays and gains can be applied to each input,and the HDMI inputs can be configured for different audio formats.USB, network, and phono settings can also be changed in this menu.

– Chapter 5 (Menu: Outputs)This menu contains settings related to the Processor’s outputs.Here you can calibrate your system with gain and delay trims.Also, the output limiters and channel polarity are configured here.

– Chapter 6 (Menu: Equalizer)This menu contains settings related to the equalizers which are availablefor each loudspeaker channel. These can be used for calibration ofloudspeakers near walls or behind screens, and room equalization.

– Chapter 7 (Menu: System)This menu contains system-related settings and information, such asdisplay brightness/sleep, network info, firmware version, and remotecontrol pairing.


3.6Cleaning

Use a dry towel of cloth for cleaning. Never use any solvent or liquids, as theymay damage the surface treatment or may penetrate into the IAP 2.

3.7Maintenance and Service

IAP 2 contains no user serviceable parts. Do not try to open, repair, or modifythe Processor by yourself. This will void any warranty. The Processor must bechecked by a qualified technician in any of the following cases:

– The Processor is not functioning properly.

– The mains cable or the power cord receptacle is damaged.

– The Processor has been dropped or shows external damage.

– The Processor has been exposed to liquids (such as rainor other substances).

Each of the sixteen IAP 2 inputs can be mapped toany of the physical inputs. This feature is called “vir-tual inputs”. You may map two inputs to the samephysical input to access the same device conve-niently with different sound and other settings.

Note that each HDMI input appears as two se-lectable physical inputs: 8-Channel (automatic for-mat detection) and 2-Channel (stereo)

By default, “Off”, on non-HDMI inputs no video isgiven to the HDMI output. Alternatively, for eachnon-HDMI input, you can choose which HDMI inputshall be given to the HDMI output.

LFE GAIN

0.0 dBThis sub-menu allows to adjust the gain of the lowfrequency effects (LFE) channel from 5.1 or 7.1 inputsources. Off means that the LFE signal is silenced.4

4 You may want to set LFE gain to Off, such that theLFE channel is not mixed into your main loudspeakers,putting less load on them. The LFE channel is definedas optional in the 5.1 standard. Thus, not consideringit, gives a complete audio experience.

SUBSONIC FILTEROFF

Optionally, you can choose to apply a subsonic high-pass filter, to reduce strain by subsonic frequencieson the loudspeakers.

LIMITERON

By default, a limiter is active on the output channels(“On”), to make sure hard clipping does not occur.The limiters may be disabled (“Off”).

For each output channel the polarity can be inverted.This may be useful to check and correct polarity.

The analog output line level can be set betweennormal (RCA 2 Vrms, XLR 4 Vrms) and high (RCA4 Vrms, XLR 8 Vrms). Unless your amplifiers needa high signal level, choose normal for better signal-to-noise ratio. Professional active loudspeakers mayneed high line level.

In addition to fine-tuning your system with equalizers,as described in this chapter, use gain and delay trim(Chapter 5) to calibrate the level and gain for eachloudspeaker).

When measuring your sound system, you canreproduce sound over each output channel individuallyin the Measurement sub-menu (Chapter 7).


6.1Introduction

For each loudspeaker you can use up to ten parametric equalizers. If you arenot familiar with parametric equalizers, go to Section 6.3 to find out more.Some typical applications of parametric equalizers are:

– Loudspeakers Near WallsLow frequency gain boost due to loudspeakers near walls or corners canbe corrected using Low Shelving filters with negative gain in dB.

– Room EqualizationTypically, Bell filters with negative gain in dB and large Q factors are usedto attenuate dominant low frequency room modes.

– Loudspeakers Behind ScreenThe low-pass characteristic of a screen can be compensated usinga High Shelving filter with positive gain in dB.

6.3Equalizer Types and Parameters

A variety of filters can be used to modify the frequency response of eachloudspeaker signal in a flexible way to achieve a desired equalization. Allfilters are implemented as minimum phase filters to minimize delay and tem-poral artifacts. For each of the ten equalizers per channel, IAP 2 allows theuser to choose one of the following types:

8.2IAP Calibration

With IAP Calibration you can measure your system and set gain/delay trimautomatically. Visualizations of your room’s response for each loudspeakerhelp greatly to set IAP 2’s equalizers to correct issues of your room andsetup. As you set equalizers, you see in real-time how the frequency andtime responses of your room change, without a need to measure again. WithIAP Calibration’s signal generators you can additionally optimize the soundby listening.
