Outcomes

1. Effortlessly automate the import process of external data.

COMIS – Data On Demand – Referential Files Cal-PASS Plus

2. Rapidly construct two types (for now!) of cohorts Entry Point Course Pattern

3. Build a community of users, developers and designers

Why use Illuminous to import COMIS and Cal-PASS Plus

data? It’s simple and easy, unlike using a tape measure!

Why use Illuminous to import data into Access?

1. Very easy, requires only a few mouse clicks

2. Standardization of external data.• COMIS DED• Cal-PASS Plus DED

3. Standardization begets a common language• Variable names are more descriptive• Removal of jargon from the CA IR lexicon• Standardization of data begets standardization of

past, present, future queries and reports!

Why use Illuminous to import data into Access? Cont.

4. Generates helpful materialized views for future use!• Ex1. Course Materialized View

o Reduces CB table to 1 record per cb.course_id using the most recently submitted term_id. Uses?

• Ex2. Student Demographic Materialized Viewo Reduces ST table to 1 record per

st.cccco_assigned_student_id using the most recently submitted term_id. Uses?

• What would YOU like to see?!

Why use Illuminous to import data into Access? Cont.

5. Overcomes the most infuriating deficiency of MS Access!• 2 GB data limit per MS Access Database!• Imports each table into its own database and links

to each of them.• If the individual table databases are housed on a

network directory, allows multiple users to access the data simultaneously – instant makeshift Data Warehouse for your research office!

Why use Illuminous to import data into Access? Cont.

6. Build a seamless dataset between high school data (Cal-PASS Plus), community college data (COMIS), and your local enterprise resource planner (e.g., Banner, Datatel)• SURELY THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE?!?• By replicating the Cal-PASS Plus

derived key for students in theStudent Identifier (SI) table!

All Things Cohort

1. What other types of cohorts do you typically create?• Exit Point?

o Grads and applying retroactive success metrics?

• Special programs?o ARISE, AANIPISI, etc?

• Specific Sections of studentso Supplemental instruction, Learning Communities

All Things Success

1. Current success metrics (not in this build. See: YouTube) • Progression through sequence• X Credits accumulated• Certificate / Degree• Transfer (First File)

2. What would you like to see added?
