Ever thought about a google play store idea for developing smart phones?

Google’s project ‘ara’ has! How does this work?

Google has introduced an innovative idea of an open hardware platform to create smart phones where different modules of the smart phone can be chosen by the user from different developers instead of using one predefined phone.

Now the user can choose the display, camera etc. from different manufacturers as well as replace

individual malfunctioning modules without changing the whole phone. Also anyone can develop a module without requiring a license or paying a fee.

So if you want a phone that combines all your

favourites, project ara is the way to

go!

The ECE Association functions with a vision to bring the students, faculty and staff together as one ECE family. A platform is provided for students across the semester to work together and aid each other in their mutual growth. I have thoroughly enjoyed my role in the association and gained a fresh perspective about academic life from the orientation program, demos, invited lectures and workshops the association organises. The ECEA newsletter is a positive step forward in bringing the ECE family together. I hope the newsletter would be able to cover everything from day to day life at ECE to our work and accomplishments. I am sure the success stories portrayed through the letter would inspire our future.

In this modern world people strive to be connected to each other everywhere(even in their showers!). A French startup

Cicret is aiming to do exactly that using a screen-free band.

The Cicret bracelet, as it’s called, contains a Pico projector complete

with proximity sensors to detect swipes & gestures. The company is planning to also include a 3G smartcard along with the band to enable calling facilities.

Much like the wearable gadgets in the market today, the bracelet is expected to have an Android-style interface. The company is presently working on the water-proof bracelet and is expected to be rolled out on July 2015.

Nature has a bounty of gifts for the mankind. And it should come as no surprise that a keen and observative mind can draw great inspiration from mother-nature.

When insects of the genus Photuris light fires in their bellies, the radiance is amplified by their

a n a t o m y - s h a r p , jagged scales - according to research p u b l i s h e d by scientists from Belgium, France, and C a n a d a . Based on this observation, the scientists then built and laid a similar

structure on a light-emitting diode (LED), which increased its brightness by 55 percent.

This is not the only one. We will be bringing up more in the next issue. Till then, keep observing nature.
