Students class standing for registration is based on earned hours, which does not include classes taken in the Spring 2017 semester. As long as you have registered for courses once previously, starting this semester your Alternate PIN will be automatically provided for you in Blackboard. You may elect to register without advising. Should you do so, your adviser will have no responsibility for lack of progress towards graduation or any courses taken that will not apply to your degree. Fall 2017 class schedules are officially available Monday March 20 and summer classes have been available for a while. You can view the class schedule either in the MyIIT Academics tab or in the “quick links” on www.iit.edu; you can also use the “secret faculty version” of the schedule at https://my105.iit.edu/coursestatusreport; just select your subjects from the drop- down box. In order to see ALL ITM courses using MyIIT drop-down menus, you must hold down your CTRL key and select Information Tech and Mgmt, ITM Development, ITM Management, ITM Operations, ITM Security & ITM Theory and Technology. For Professor Trygstad’s Advisees: I prefer to see all of my students for advising in person, so please try to come and see me during the advising period. Professor Trygstad will be available for advising at the Mies Campus Tuesday through Friday. Advising appointments are available Tuesday through Thursday. I will be available for advising by appointment & during office hours at the Rice Campus only on Mondays. You may schedule an appointment at http://trygstad.rice.iit.edu/appointment/ but please ensure you are there at or before your scheduled time to be fair to your fellow students. You cannot make an appointment during my scheduled office hours or on Fridays; just drop in. As a reminder my Mies Campus office is Perlstein 223E and my Rice Campus office is room 227. If there are any changes to my schedule they will be reflected in my calendar at http://trygstad.rice.iit.edu/calendar/ so you may want to check there before you come see me. Evening advising is unlikely but can only be arranged by appointment via email. For Professor Hajek’s Advisees: Professor Hajek is available on the the Mies Campus Monday through Thursday afternoons, 11:45am to 1:15pm, and can be available by prior arrangement for advising at the Rice Campus on Fridays. You can make an appointment with Professor Hajek at at http://hajek.youcanbookme.com. ITM First Year Undergraduate (Freshman) Advising Freshmen should enroll in a Natural Science or Engineering elective. Remember that two courses in Natural Science or Engineering must be in the same subject area. We strongly recommend PHYS 200, Energy, Waves, Materials, & Forces. Freshmen should take a humanities elective, i.e. HUM 20X or take a lower social or behavioral science elective. HUM 208 is strongly recommended. Remember that you must take 9 hours of lower-level social or behavioral science and humanities (100/200) but it can be two humanities and one social or behavioral science or two social or behavioral science and one humanity. Most of your classmates will be taking an Introduction to the Profession (ITP) course numbered 100 (i.e. CS 100, CAE 100, ME 100, etc.) but our course, ITM 100, is now taken in the first semester of your second year and is mandatory for all students. ITM Current Second Year Undergraduate (Sophomore) Advising Sophomore (U-2) students who entered the program as first year undergraduates (freshmen) need to start thinking about a minor, as completion of a minor is required in your ITM program. It can be anything you want—I do think it would be amazing to see someone in IT minor in philosophy—but you really need to start thinking about this. An interesting minor with a strong relationship to ITM is Digital Humanities. Second year students who have not taken MATH 230 Discrete Math should wait until fall Spring 2018 as we are working with the Math Department on a Discrete Math for Non-Math Majors course, possibly MATH 231, to be offered starting that term. Second year students who have completed three semesters at IIT may want to consider entering the Co-Terminal Degree program, which would allow you to earn a Master’s degree while you are an undergraduate; speak with your adviser for more details. ITM Current Third Year Undergraduate (Junior) Advising Junior (U-3) students who entered the program as first year undergraduates (freshmen) should be two or three courses into your minor since completion of a minor is required in your ITM program. If you are not, we seriously need to talk. Also, transfer students who have completed a semester at IIT may want to consider entering the Co-Terminal Degree program, which would allow you to earn a Master’s degree while you are an undergraduate; speak with your adviser for more details. Humanities General Education Elective Selection Here are Professor Trygstad’s recommendations for Upper-Level Humanities General Education electives for Fall 2017 with my reasons. We can’t promise a course will be good; we’re just trying to highlight the courses we believe would be of the most interest to ITM students. There are a lot of courses we think will interest you this term, and there are several early evening and evening humanities courses offered, so if you work full-time, grab ’em while you can! All courses are at Mies Campus, and most sections have 22 seats. 10 W. 33 rd St., Chicago, Illinois 60616 l 312.567.5290 l appliedtech.iit.edu/itm Created 2/27/17 / Updated 3/21/17 / Ray Trygstad / 1

Industrial Psychology: This course is highly recommended and professionally relevant. And no prerequisite! 11447/PSYC/301-01/LEC/3/Mon-Wed 1:50pm-3:05pm/50/TBA/Mahima Saxena11448/PSYC/301-02/LEC/3/Tues-Thur 8:35am-9:50am/50/TBA/TBD11449/PSYC/301-03/LEC/3/Mon-Wed 5:00pm-6:15pm/50/TBA/TBD11450/PSYC/301-04/LEC/3/Tues-Thur 3:15pm-4:30pm/50/TBA/TBD

WARNING I have not listed them, but you may notice that there are two online Social/Behavioral Science electives in the fallterm: ECON 423-02 Economic Analysis of Capital Investments and PSYC 481-02 Group & Leadership at Work. I do notrecommend either class either live or online, despite the extreme scarcity of online general education electives. This is becauseexperience has shown that if you take one of these courses and four other classes, ECON 423 or PSYC 481 will be as muchwork as your other four classes combined. I like John Twombly who teaches ECON 423 and Roya Ayman who teaches PSYC481 and you probably would too—they are excellent teachers—but their expectations are extremely high as is the workload intheir classes. If you really need to do a social science elective online AND you are not afraid of hard work (really hard work),then GO FOR IT. And remember, your adviser needs to enter a departmental permit for undergrads to register for any onlinecourses.

Fall/Summer 2017 ITM Undergraduate Advising NotesNatural Science/Engineering and Mathematics General Education Elective SelectionHere are my recommendations for Natural Science/Engineering General Education electives for Fall 2017 with my reasons. Weare not recommending any Mathematics courses for Fall 2017 as we are working with the Math Department on a Discrete Mathfor Non-Math Majors course, possibly MATH 231, to be offered starting in Spring 2018. All courses are at the Mies Campus. Allcourse data follows the format:

CRN/Course Number/Days-Time/# of Seats/Bldg-Room/InstructorEngineering Graphics for Non-Engineers: Learn to read blueprints and much more. The time for this class is not listed because the instructor, Jim Novak, gathers up the schedules of all of the students who have enrolled and determines a time for the class to meet that will work for everyone. Jim is “officially” retired and we don't know how much longer he will teach this course, but he is the wizard of engineering graphics so get it while you can. If you want or need to take this, send an emailto [email protected] to request a permit to register, and be sure to include your student ID number.

10444/EG 225-01/TBD/36/RE-029/James Novak

Introduction to Energy, Waves, Materials, & Forces: A four-hour, non-calculus -based physics class. HIGHLY recommended.10262/PHYS 200-01/Tues-Thur 11:25am-1:05pm/100/TBA/Sally Laurent-Muehleisen

Astronomy: If you are completing most of your Natural Science/Engineering requirement through the Engineering Graphics track but need that one course in a different subject, this could be your choice.

18589/PHYS 120-01/Mon-Wed 10:00am-11:15am/32/TBA/David Gidalevitz

If you are following the EG sequence for your Natural Science/Engineering requirements, you should note that EG 325 and EG 425 are also offered this term.

Recommendations for Free Elective SelectionHere are my recommendations for free electives for Fall 2017 with my reasons. All courses are at the Mies Campus unless notedotherwise. All course data follows the format:

CRN/Course Number/Days-Time/# of Seats/Bldg-Room/Instructor Application Programming Interfaces: Learn about API’s from a slightly different perspective. May be counted as an ITMelective if you need it for that; Professor Stolley has a joint appointment as an ITM Associate Professor.

40078/COM 333-01/Mon-Wed 5:00pm-6:15pm/12/GL-LLC/Karl Stolley

Fall 2017 IIT Core Curriculum Elective Listing, Fall 2017 ITM Course Listing, and Summer 2017 Course ListingI have included a complete list of what I view as all the applicable IIT Core Curriculum courses for the Fall so you don’t haveto track them all down yourself. I’ve also included a quick-reference of all ITM and INTM courses for the Fall, as well as a listof most of the Summer 2017 courses that might be of interest to ITM undergrads.

ITM (C) Course Fall Elective SelectionAs you are pondering your choice of ITM electives, just a reminder: IIT’s general education requirements say that you have totake a minimum of 12 hours of (C) coded courses in your major. These are courses with a significant written and oralcommunication component. Everyone will do three (C) coded courses (9 hours) as part of the ITM required courses, but thisleaves 3 hours or one course that must be (C) coded ITM electives. There are only five (C) coded elective courses in theundergraduate curriculum, and we are offering three of them in the Fall term; all of them are available online as well. Allcourse data follows the format:

CRN/Course Number/Days-Time/# of Seats/Bldg-Room/Instructor Fundamentals of Multimedia is an overview examination of multimedia design and creation.

Note also that ITMS 448 Cyber Security Technologies will meet on the Mies Campus this fall.

Summer 2017 CoursesI have included a complete list of what I view as all the applicable IIT Core Curriculum and ITM courses for the Summer soyou don’t have to track them all down yourself.

ITM courses that are generally only offered in the summer include ITMD 413, Open-Source Programming. Sections -01 and-02 this summer will tackle the Django web framework with Python—a very hot language for big data—while section -03 and-04 will cover Ruby on Rails, a very popular web application development framework. We also have five requiredundergraduate courses, giving you a chance to get ahead...

I actually recommend every single course the Humanities Department is offering this summer. (That makes three summers ina row!) I especially recommend PHIL 363-01 Aesthetics, taught by John “Jack” Snapper, the best teacher at the university. But none are in the evening.

For Social and Behavioral Sciences, I strongly recommend PSYC 380-01 Behavior Design & User Testing taught by DanielKrieglstein, who is also an ITM faculty member. I also recommend PS 332, Politics of Science and Technology. Note also thatthere is an online social science course, ECON 211-02 Principles of Economics, so even if you’re home for the summer you couldstill get a general ed course in.

EG 225 Engineering Graphics for Non-Engineers is offered this summer which is a nice opportunity.

Other Useful Information at Registration TimeCourse Retakes for Grade Replacement: (limit of 3 for 100/200 level courses and 3 for 300/400 level courses forundergrads): You must submit an appeal using the petition process in Degreeworks.
