For a tournament with an iconic name and a glit-tering list of winners, the Chicago Open certainly has a tough time keeping its head above water.

After two years of the most recent version, the Il-linois Junior Golf Association has thrown in the towel. There weren’t enough entries to make the tourney a moneymaker and put cash in, rather than take it from, the non-profit’s coffers.

That leaves Andy Ruthkoski, who captured the centennial edition of the title at Cantigny Golf in Whea-ton over Casey Pyne on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff, without a championship to defend this October, unless someone else steps up and negotiates with the CDGA to use the name.

It started as the Chicago District Golf Association Open in 1914 and played again in 1915, 1926 and 1927, with a run in 1937-38 and 1940-48 the heyday of the tournament, when it was a regular stop on the pro circuit and luminaries Byron Nelson, Sam Snead and Ben Hogan were winners. Ken Venturi won back-to-back revivals at Gleneagles in the late 1950s, Luke Donald grabbed the 2000 title as an amateur at Bever-ly, and Carlos Sainz Jr., now on the PGA Tour, scored the victory in the 2013 revival under IJGA auspicies.

Major notion: The whisper is that Kerry Haigh, tournament boss of the PGA of America, has slated a Cog Hill visit to assess its suitibility for ... something. PGA? Senior PGA? The Club Pro?

That’s too early to tell, but it’s encouraging, with Medinah out of the PGA picture, that the Jemsek fam-

ily is being pro-active and wants to host a PGA-oper-ated tournament.

Even if Cog Hill is offered the Club Pro – officially and clumsily the PGA Professional National Champi-onship – that’s a plus, because it gets the PGA board and staff on site and they’ll be able to see the acres of space for corporate tents and parking to be used for something bigger.

Call Jay Haas Mr. President: With all the angst over how to select a Ryder Cup captain – and then going with a Medinah redux at the top in the person of Davis Love III, who cannot be blamed for his players gagging in Sunday singles in 2012 – we can’t help not-ing that Belleville native and Illinois Golf Hall of Famer Jay Haas is the captain for this year’s U.S. Presidents Cup squad.

So far, nobody, not even Phil Mickelson, has beefed or otherwise whined that Haas was the wrong man for the job or that someone else has been wronged by being snubbed.

We will take it that’s because of the high regard Haas has always been held in by his peers, rather than the relative lack of interest in Presidents Cup doings compared to the Ryder Cup soap opera.

Last of the bucket: Once upon a time, people tuned in to watch Tiger Woods to see excellence. Now, it’s to see what calamity might befall him next. It’s like the sadistic few who watch the Indy 500 for the accidents. Woods is no prince, but it would be good for him and golf if he’d stop smacking the fence in Turn 2.

A Miller’s tale: two decades of progressMichael Miller was looking out his

office window at the Glen Club, not exactly longingly.

It was March 23. It was snowing.That, he said with a chuckle, confirmed his

decision to pull up roots and move to the desert. The Illinois PGA’s executive director for 20 years, Miller takes the same post with the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Southwest PGA on or about May 1.

It’s not a lateral move. There are about 1,300 pros in the SWPGA, compared to some 850 in the Illinois PGA. His new section’s footprint covers Arizona and Clark County, Nevada, a.k.a. Las Vegas. That boosts the numbers.

But it is a surprising one.“Very bittersweet emotions,” Miller said.Talks began in late January and moved

swiftly. Miller brought experience and an attrac-tive record of growth, particularly on the Illinois PGA Foundation side.

“It became apparent they needed somebody with experience,” Miller said. “They also have a section foundation, with a few small events.”

Their tournament program is similar to the Il-linois PGA’s, but has room for more. The irony in the timing is this year’s expansion of the Illinois Open to two sites to eventually grow the purse.

“That’s the disappointing part,” Miller said. “We’ve been talking about doing that for a num-ber of years. I’m disappointed I won’t be able to see it through.”

Purse stagnation, which club pros sometimes

complain about, is due to the aftereffects of the Great Recession more than anything else.

Miller joined the Illinois PGA as tourna-ment director in 1986, left for two years in sports marketing, and returned to start the section foundation under Vance Redfern. He succeeded Redfern in 1995.

Since then, the Illinois PGA has expanded its tournament schedule, raised the profile of the Hall of Fame, created the Youth Skills Challenge – which the PGA of America, USGA and Au-gusta National turned into the Drive, Chip and Putt campaign without a nod of thanks – doing so with a staff that numbered three when he first walked in the door and now numbers only six.

“I’ve got a great staff in place,” Miller said. “The timing is a little unfortunate because we’ve got two new staffers.”

Miller and his family ought not consign all his cold-weather wear to a garage sale. Snow stopped the PGA Tour’s match play tournament in its tracks in the upper elevations near Tucson a few years back, and it can get cold in Flagstaff.

But when he peers out the window of the

Meanwhile, here we are again.The masthead box on Page 2 indicates

this is the first issue of IllInoIs Golfer, at least electronically, but that’s a bit of a misnomer.

Aside from the online site upon which this issue can be found, and the print edition of April 2012 – critically acclaimed but halted aborning when it became clear startup costs would exceed the funds allotted after a few issues in a tough market – two prototype “electronic editions” were issued last year, testing the waters for both potential advertisers and the publication’s style.

A special edition covering the Illinois Open in July was followed by an August test issue with the main focus on the Western Amateur. People liked what they saw, so here we are. Call it digital print, a much more conducive format for in-depth coverage, for advertisers, and for you.

This, then, is the fourth issue overall, and the third via the magic of the Internet.

A greater variety of bylines, some familiar and some new, will appear as we muddle along. Particular attention this issue should be paid to Page 16, where we reprint a column written by Mike Spellman for that print inaugural. Mike died over the winter, far too young: a day short of his 51st birthday. We think there is no greater remembrance than his column on the thrall life and sport had for him.

2015 Season Preview

There’s something for everyoneBy Tim Cronin

–––––It’s a good thing for golf fans gas isn’t close to

$4 a gallon these days.Those who want to see all six of this year’s

most significant tournaments within reasonable driving distance of Chicago’s Loop will, in three cases, be in their car for a while.

The good news is, the other three can be reached by taking a short drive – or even the train.

All six – and two other amateur tournaments that we didn’t have room for in the graphic to the right – are worth seeing, for the competition or the course or both. And the first on the list, the Senior PGA Championship over Memorial Day weekend, is the most novel of the group.

It’s being played on the Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort, the jewel of that southern Indiana town. In the Roaring Twenties, when money was being thrown about lavishly, the aforementioned resort and local backers lured the 1924 PGA Championship to French Lick, and Walter Hagen won on the Donald Ross-designed Hill Course. The layout is still there, named for Ross now, but it’s the Dye layout, built atop the Mt. Airie ridge by the designer from Carmel, Ind., that will get the attention from the 50-plus set.

Defending champion Colin Montgomerie and the rest of the field will have to contend with a 7,147-yard course that sweeps across and swoops down the ridge, portions of which have views of

How well the Senior PGA will draw is a big question. Resort goers on holiday may flock to the tournament, but there’s another big sports event in Indiana that weekend: the Indianapolis 500.

The second weekend of July presents a conun-drum for the avid fan. Hang out in Glenview for the seniors’ visit to North Shore for the Encom-pass Championship, or roll into Silvis, adjecent to the Quad Cities, for the John Deere Classic?

Some will undoubtedly try to do both. The Deere, of course, is a four-day show, plus the ear-ly-week practice rounds and Wednesday pro-am. The Encompass, where Tom Lehman is the de-fending champion, counts only the last three days on the scorecard.

The courses are different enough to invite close inspection. D.A. Weibring designed TPC Deere Run, and it’s cut from the modern stadium golf cloth that Dye conjured up with the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass in the early 1980s. Con-versely, North Shore is an old classic, laid upon the ground with a minimum of fuss by Harry Colt and Charles Alison in 1924, and deemed good enough just nine years later to host the U.S. Open. It’s been touched up since, and a comprehensive remodeling is being contemplated.

That, and Encompass’ leave-taking as a spon-sor after July 10-12, means this could be your last chance to walk on the grounds where Johnny Goodman was the last amateur to win the U.S. Open. Perhaps the plan should be to play hooky on the Friday at North Shore, then motor out to Silvis for one of the weekend days at the Deere, where a 59 is always a prospect. Last year, Bri-an Harman posted a 5-under-par 66 on Sunday to score a one-stroke victory over 2012 winner

– and JDC board member – Zach Johnson to grab the trophy and the last spot in the British Open.

A month later brings the third playing of the PGA Championship to Whistling Straits, the Pete Dye concoction adjacent to Lake Michigan in Ha-ven, Wis. The 97th PGA, from Aug. 13-16, has only single-day tickets remaining. They’re $90 on Thursday and $95 the last three tournament days.

Bargain-hunters may consider practice round tickets ($30 and $40), but there’s no guarantee de-fending champion Rory McIlroy will tee it up on all three practice days.

The following week – Aug. 17-23 – features a seven-day feast of golf at Olympia Fields Country Club in the south suburbs. The 115th U.S. Ama-teur, oldest tournament in the land, opens with stroke-play qualifying on Monday and Tuesday on both courses, followed by five days of match play on the North Course.

Last year’s U.S. Am featured a surprise, even by amateur standards, when Gunn Yang, 776th in the world amateur rankings, knocked off every-body in his path at Atlanta Athletic Club to grab the title. He took the year off from San Diego State

– where he’d lost his scholarship before winning the Am – but is expected to defend his title.

On a par with the U.S. Amateur are two ama-teur titles to be contested at Rich Harvest Farms, the backyard course of Jerry Rich in Sugar Grove. The first is the Palmer Cup on June 12-14. The Ry-der Cup-style college tournament pits the 10 best U.S. collegians against the 10 best from Europe – the visitors coached by Jean Van de Velde.

On Aug. 3-8, the Western Amateur plays through. The argument can be made that the West-ern Amateur field is better than the one for the U.S. Amateur. Certainly, the path to victory is as arduous, if not more so. The two finalists endure four rounds of stroke-play qualifying over three days, followed by four 18-hole matches over two more days.

That’s 144 holes, more or less, across five days. It’s no wonder that no winner in the last 17 years has been older than 23. Beau Hossler was 19 when he won last year.

That’s a full plate, but don’t miss dessert. The BMW Championship brings its Western Open heritage and PGA Tour playoff intensity back to Conway Farms Golf Club from Sept. 17-20.

Two years ago, fans piled in until the rains came, Zach Johnson scored the victory, Tiger Woods refused to believe his ball moved and was slapped with a two-stroke penalty, Henrik Sten-son wrecked a locker after blowing up, and Jim Furyk scored a most divine 59.

There is no template that fits all that in, but it happened. What happens this time is anyone’s guess, but someone will get rich: The purse has been upped to $8.25 million, with $1.45 million to the winner. Tickets start at $50 or $55 for tour-nament days through the end of April, but the best deal is the all-week badge: $125.

Will two courses be twice the fun?Illinois Open expands field, to play at Royal Melbourne, Hawthorn Woods

There are 100,000 reasons why the Illinois Open will be played at two courses this year.

A dollar sign is in front of them.The goal in expanding the state championship

from one course to two – Royal Melbourne and Hawthorn Woods, located a few miles from each other in Lake County – is to increase the field, and thus the purse to six figures, back where it was from 1998-2003, in a flush economy when more people had the time to give qualifying a whirl.

Entries have dropped recently, a trend outgo-ing Illinois PGA executive director Michael Miller believes will be reversed with 258 players, rather than the usual 156, gaining a berth in the field, the great majority doing so through qualifying.

More places mean better odds of making it in, though that doesn’t equal a better chance to win. Now there will be 257 players in opposition, rather than 155. However, the cut will be raised to the low 70 and ties, up from the low 50 and ties, so there are 20 more chances to get a check.

The innovation was over a year in the making. The idea of playing at Harborside International, the 36-hole facility on Chicago’s far South Side managed by KemperSports, was considered and discarded in favor of the two private clubs man-aged by Kemper instead. They’re close enough that someone playing from out of town can book a hotel nearby and have a short trip to either course. And Illinois PGA staffers will be able to get from

one course to another in about 15 minutes.“Both courses have local championship his-

tory,” Miller said during the announcement at the Chicago Golf Show. “We are confident the cours-es will provide a stern test for the top amateur and

professional players in Illinois.”Hawthorn Woods hosted the Illinois Open

from 2008 to 2011. Mike Small won the Illinois PGA at Royal Melbourne in 2003 and 2004.

For the moment, the number of quailfying sites is remaining at seven, with only one down-state. But Miller envisions growth down the line as players, both pro and amateur, realize that a spot in the field isn’t out of the question.

Larger fields mean larger purses. While sup-porting sponsors help – and helped more in the flush 1990s – entry fees fund much of it.

The purse has been between $80,000 and $85,000 the last few years, including the value of the gift certificates given to amateurs.

What makes a successful golf show?For the owner, filled booths and aisles filled

with golfers.For those golfers, things to do and people to

talk with.In that regard, both expositions held in the

Chicago area this winter appeared to succeed.The Tinley Park Golf Expo was larger than

ever in its fourth year at the Tinley Park Con-vention Center in the south suburb, with more booths, a bigger hitting area, and around 10,000 attendees.

Co-owner Gregg Tengerstrom – professional at nearby Silver Lake Country Club in Orland Park – says that next year, he may be forced to expand to the one portion of the center he hasn’t yet used.

Two weeks later, the Chicago Golf Show, overseen by Tom Corcoran, staged its 32nd re-newal, and took over much of the first floor in the main exhibition hall in Rosemont’s sprawling convention emporium. Across three days, some 17,700 people turned out.

Many were there to listen to major champions Lee Trevino and David Graham, who regaled the gallery with stories of competitions and camara-derie on various continents across three deccades. Trevino, of course, did most of the talking, doing so after a late arrival following several flight can-cellations.

But funny stories are one thing and seeking

And, while most every golf organization and upcoming tournament was represented – the J.K. Wadley and Havemeyer trophies, emblemat-ic of the BMW Championship and U.S. Amateur, respectively, were under the same roof for per-haps the first time – the departments of destina-tion golf and closeout sales seem to rule the golf shows these days.

As has been the case for years, courses and resorts from new and far rent booths and attempt to entice people to stop, if only for a few seconds, to get their pitch across.

Whether it is to drop by Orland Park or the Ozarks, the first goal for the course operator is to get the weary showgoer, who may be on his 11th aisle in 90 minutes and by now is only looking for a place to sit down and rest his barking dogs, to listen to a pitch on how beautiful Scenic Acres Golf Course, the one with waterfalls on every hole, is unlike any other layout in the world.

Sometimes that works, sometimes not. A few years ago, courses from Myrtle Beach and Flori-da were regulars. Now, most of layouts are from closer to home, and likely getting more bang for their buck.

The same seems true of the club sellers, which range from second-hand stores to first-run outlets looking to unload last year’s inventory to at least one area club manufacturer, Tour Edge.

In an era where some companies bring out new models twice a year, selling the old stuff seems counter-intuitive. But there are two types of equipment buyers, those who must have the latest, and those who know that last year’s model, or even 2007’s, will be new to them if they’re still playing with something from a decade ago.

So to the bins and boxes they go, searching

for that set of irons or wonder driver to turn their game around. And sometimes, they find it. The Tour Edge booth seems to be doing brisk business whenever we walked by.

At the same time, what’s missing – at least this was the case this year – is a strong presence from the manufacturers in the department of hands-on demonstrating.

In an era where it’s easier than ever to get the word out about a new product, but harder than ever to make a lasting impact, getting those who spend the money to get their hands on the new toys would seem to be the best way to sell.

Who buys a car or a golf club without a test drive? But few and far between were the big com-panies, with eager employees ready to thrust their new implement into a showgoer’s hands while saying, “Give it a spin.” Go figure.

Perhaps the “demo day” craze of recent years, which can fill up a driving range with those in a buying mood, has proven to be a better way to make the case for the new stuff.

But, given that the PGA show is just a few weeks in the rear-view mirror, why not give the poor guy who has paid to get in – and paid for parking, in the case of the show in Rosemont – a taste of what’s new?

The golf show concept seems to have re-bounded from its nadir a few years back, when the Chicago show was combined for a winter with a “backyard” show. That might have proved a boon to those selling artificial putting greens, but otherwise, seemed the exhibition version of a horse designed by committee.

Happily, it was only a one-year move, and this year’s gathering of the clan in Rosemont was stuffed with exhibitors. Add the big brand names at each show, and everyone will come out ahead.

Keiser, Small made it year to remember2014 in Review


It was a year for ideas big and successes Small, and in that regard, 2014 was not that dif-ference from many other revolutions around the sun in the last two decades.

Most of them have seen Mike Small at least one golf tournament. Last year, Small’s big indi-vidual catch was the Illinois PGA Championship. Nothing new there. It was the 11th triumph in the tournament and fifth in six playings for the coach of Illinois’ men’s team at Stonewall Orchard Golf Club in Grayslake.

Many of the last 20 years have also seen Chi-cagoan Mike Keiser make an impact in the golf world. The leader of the American links golf movement, Keiser extended his coast-to-coast (not to mention Tasmania) reach by moving for-ward with the plan for a multiple-course opera-tion, Sand Valley, near Rome – Wisconsin, that is.

Oh, and by the end of the year Small’s Fight-ing Illini squad was ranked No. 1 in the country.

While we wait for lasting warmth in 2015, here’s a more detailed look at their achievements, and some other things that happened in 2014:

The prospect for greatness at Sand Valley is informed by the track record of the links cours-

ing slated a second course near Cabot Links, ar-ranged for a 36-hole municipal complex not far from his landmark Bandon Dunes resort in Or-egon, and, best of all for midwesteners, moved forward on the multi-course Sand Valley project

es Keiser has caused to come into being since the private Dunes Club opened in Michi-gan 20 years ago, and prompts our naming Keiser as IllInoIs Golfer’s Person of the Year.

Sand Valley, like Dunes Club, and the Bandon and Cabot complexes, will be built Mike Keiseron sand, and thus true links courses – albeit with-out a link to a present-day sea. Those deposits, made in the last ice age, created the hilly, well-draining environment that benefits so many golf courses old and new in Wisconsin and parts of northern Illinois.

The duo of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw designed Sand Valley’s first course, which is un-der construction now, and will be their fourth for Keiser. If all goes well, it will open late next year for the investors who have joined in the project, and to the public in 2017.

David McLay Kidd, who got the Bandon re-sort going with Bandon Dunes in 1999, won a three-way architectural contest with Tom Doak and Rod Whitman to design the second course. That one will open in 2018.

vest Farms and a loss to Stanford in the NCAA national quarterfinals. Brian Campbell was named the Big Ten’s player of the year – the third straight under Small and fifth overall, and later in the summer made the Western Amateur’s Sweet Sixteen, as did recruit Nick Hardy.

Other schools with warmer climates have taken runs at Small, but he’s stayed at his alma mater, and with the impressive double-fairway practice facility modeled after Augusta National’s now close to opening, there’s no reason for him to go anywhere.

Valley, Keiser revealed when announcing the purchase of 1,500 acres. The architects for the third and fourth courses have not been locked in, though Doak and Whitman should remain in consideration, since their separate prospective layouts are on untouched different pieces of the property.

Player of the YearThe numbers are staggering. Since his first

victory in the Illinois PGA Championship in 2001, Mike Small has won 16 state majors open to professionals – the quartet of tournaments are the Illinois Open, Illinois PGA, Illinois PGA Match Play or Illinois Players – and finished sec-ond, either solo or with others, four more times. (He also grabbed a co-runner-up spot in the 1993 Illinois Open, when he was chasing his PGA Tour dream.)

Last year’s big win in the Illinois PGA at Stonewall Orchard was typical. Small opened with a 5-under-par 67 to match Adam Schumach-er’s opening round, added a second 67 to take a five-stroke lead on Steve Orrick of Decatur, then fired a 66 playing alongside Orrick, who matched Small’s final round score, to finish at 16-under 200 and win by five strokes.

There were other victories great and small across the state, but for the impact Small has registered, he’s the IllInoIs Golfer Player of the Year for 2014.

What Small accomplished in his day job was as impressive. His Fighting Illini have been ranked No. 1 all season thanks to a start with three straight victories, opening the 2014-15 campaign with a come-from-behind victory at their invita-tional at Olympia Fields.

Thanks for playingTwo closures highlighted the idea there are

fewer golfers, and those who are still playing are playing less golf. Plum Tree National in Har-vard, a 1970 Joe Lee design that eventually went from private to public, closed at the end of the 2013 season, without an announcement that it would not open in 2014.

Last spring came and nothing happened. The phone rang in the clubhouse, unanswered. Regu-lar customers teed it up elsewhere. Curiously,

Plum Tree National’s Internet page can still be accessed.

Late in the year came a planned closure. Woodbine, the first golf course in Homer Glen, closed to become the first park in Homer Glen. The plan is for the clubhouse to serve as the vil-lage hall.

The village bought the 100-acre property from the Ludwig family for $3.3 million in 2013, allowing the course to stay open for the 2014 sea-son. Designed by Gordon Cunningham, it had opened May 26, 1988.

In both cases, business had been good until the Great Recession of 2008. That economic down-turn continues to affect the game and the courses it is played on. Prior to the closure of Plum Tree National and Woodbine, the following courses had been lost to development or just closure and abandonment in the last decade:

A first-time visitor to Augusta National Golf Club is likely to be a happy victim of sensory overload. Thereis much to marvel at, from the beauty of the grounds to the history on every hole. When that visitor looks

around more closely, and chats with fellow mem-bers of the gallery, Augusta becomes even more amazing. The stories are as good as the views.

Like passengers rushing to make connecting flights at O’Hare, many of those stories connect through Illinois, more specifically Chicagoland.

That’s been the case since the first tourna-ment. The Augusta National Invitation Tourna-ment, Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts insisted it should be called, though just about everyone else called it the Masters. Then and now, the field was elite, with only 72 contestants. About the only one missing was Gene Sarazen, off on a long-scheduled exhibition trip overseas. He’d make noise like an albatross in the next playing.

The inaugural edition in 1934 was unique. What all know as the back nine was the front nine for the first Masters, making the opening tee shot that daunting hook down the hill and around the corner that now leads to Amen Corner.

The journey for one of those 72 players be-gan at Oak Park Country Club. The journey of another brought him there.

Horton Smith and Errie Ball took alternate paths during the tournament. Ball ended up tied for 38th at Augusta, a balky putter – or perhaps the yips – vexing him on the final day. Smith won it, his first solo victory in 16 months.

At the time, Smith was the head professional at Oak Park. He’d taken that job early in 1932, a lad of 23, after winning 13 times on the pro circuit in about 31 months. Nobody came close to that until Tiger Woods. But a bad back, brought on by gruel-ing exhibition tours and a propensity to practice, slowed Smith, and he looked for a club job.

occasionally in the summer. But the first Masters was at the end of the 1933-34 winter tour, and Smith was winless during that venture.

He was surprised as anyone to share the first round lead, and be a stroke ahead after 36 holes, and keep that margin entering the final round. Not that very many people were watching. Galleries

were small, only a few thousand each day, and most everyone was following Bobby Jones in his first tournament since retiring after the 1930 Grand Slam.

Smith? Even he watched Jones on Sunday until it was time to tee off. And he did so after Craig Wood finished with 3-under-par 285 and the clubhouse lead. Smith was 4-under starting the final round, so knew where he stood decades before the giant scoreboards dotted course. And he was tied with Wood looking at a 12-footer for birdie on the par-5 17th (the eighth hole today).

Smith sank the putt to regain the solo lead, but hit his second on the 18th (the ninth hole now) to the back of a boomerang-shaped green. He was 40 feet from the cup and needed to two-putt downhill to win.

“The cup was on the forward part of the green on a downhill, sidehill slope,” Smith wrote. “I fig-ured that the smart thing to do was to putt by the hole so that I would have an uphill putt coming back. But I did just the opposite. I borrowed too much and struck too lightly and was left with the worst putt I could have; still downhill and sidehill.

“The green was so fast and slippery that if I had missed I would have gone just as far be-yond the hole because the wind had swept off the greens and there was no resistance of the grass.

“I was naturally annoyed with myself for missing my first putt so I approached the next one with caution. Then a positive thought came to me which told me that the only way to make the putt was to be sure to hit the ball firmly because if I let up on it, it would break right off. I knocked the ball right into the middle of the cup.”

He was in with a 72 for 4-under 284 and the

lead, and after Billy Burke failed to catch him, the winner. He received a gold medal and $1,500.

Two years later, he won again and took brought the same baubles back to Oak Park. The green jacket wasn’t awarded until 1949.

Smith left his Oak Park job to return to the tour about the time he won his second Masters, but was so well thought of he was awarded an honorary membership.

Ball arrived at Oak Park late in 1945. He made a return visit to the Masters in 1957 thanks to a high finish in the 1956 U.S. Open. The 23 years between starts is a record that still stands.

While Smith is remembered for winning the inaugural, Ball was recalled until his death last year for being the last living member of the field.

“I’m the last man standing,” he’d kid.Ball had become friends with Jones during a

British Open. His uncle Frank Ball happened to be the head pro at East Lake Golf Club in Atlan-ta, Jones’ club. The two convinced him to leave Wales for the New World. And when Jones’ new course hosted the world of golf, Errie was there.

“I didn’t know it was going to get this big,” Ball said in 2011. “Charlie Yates and myself got an invitation. When we got the invitation, we were thrilled to death, because we knew anything Bob Jones went into was going to be good.

“You see how it’s turned out.”Another connection is more tangible. The

duo who ran the pro shop for over 35 years, for instance. Bob Kletcke and Dave Spencer were from Chicago’s Morgan Park neighborhood and Iowa, respectively, but ended up in the little shop steps from the first tee.

Kletcke arrived first. He was a solid junior

player who lost the 1956-57 IHSA state title to Emil Esposito in a playoff, then left Western Il-linois because there was only one scholarship left and Esposito got it. Kletcke turned pro and ended up at Park Ridge Country Club before leaving for the Wakonda Club in Des Moines, Iowa.

“I wanted to learn how to teach,” Kletcke said recently. “Bill Rose was the head pro. He’d worked for Johnny Revolta at Evanston.”

In 1963, Wakonda hosted the America’s Cup and the U.S. Amateur. Along the way Kletcke impressed Augusta National members Billy Joe Patton and Charlie Coe. One day, Patton said, “How’d you like to move south? Gene Stout needs an assistant.”

Kletcke asked who Stout was.“He’s the pro at Augusta,” Patton said. “You

write him a letter, and mention my name.”Then Coe, standing nearby, said to put his

name in the letter as well.“I didn’t know those guys from a bag of oats a

week before,” Kletcke said. “I was there 41 years.

I had a great ride, I can tell you.”In 1967, Stout retired and Kletcke became

head pro. He called Sunset Ridge and grabbed Spencer, Bob Harris’ top assistant. After one year, Augusta member and chairman Clifford Roberts, seeing how big their job was becoming, had an idea. Roberts said they would become co-head professionals, if they thought it would work.

They made it work, a unique arrangement lasting until Kletcke retired in 2004.

“One person really couldn’t do it,” Kletcke said. “As golf grew, the Masters got bigger and bigger.”

Kletcke and Roberts got along famously.“He was a hell of a guy,” Kletcke said. “Mr.

Roberts was a 1,000 percent perfectionist. He wanted everything done right. I figured that out after being around him for a short time.

“If not for him, the Masters would not be what it is today, I can tell you that.”

na, and Roberts liked it so much, he joined. He liked Kletcke so much, he babysat his daughters.

One summer day, Roberts called Kletcke. Augusta National’s sand sup-plier was out of sand, and new sand was needed for the winter season.

Kletcke knew a supplier of not just any sand, but sand that would stand up to Roberts’ keen eye.

“A friend at Grandfather had a place in Spruce Pine, a little mining town about 25 miles away,” Kletcke said. “He produced feldspar. Not sand, but ground rock. It was the only place in the southeast where you could get it. If you grab a handful, it’s like a handful of marbles. But when the ball hits the sand, it won’t bury. It’s the best sand for golf.

“They bought a bunch of it.”Since the mid-1970s, that gleam-

ing white feldspar has been the “sand” in Augusta National’s bunkers, all be-cause Kletcke put Roberts onto it.

They also had a large hand in the off-course operation that allows the club to reap a substantial fortune for seven days each year. The ever-ex-panding interest in Masters goodies meant continual expansion of the out-side golf shops used during the Mas-

ters. It grew and grew, overseen by the duo until Kletcke’s retirement, and by Spencer until he retired in 2006.

“What you see with the merchan-dise is a result of Dave and myself,” Kletcke said.

The business of the Masters week shop is, along with international TV revenue, what keeps the club able to charge next to nothing for food and drink during the tournament, and keep the policy of limited commer-cials on television. In its April issue, Golf Digest estimated the club makes about $30.875 million profit on mer-chandise during the week – about $4.4 million a day. Anyone who has seen the frenzy associated with buy-ing in the shop will not argue the point.

Asked if he and Spencer got a cut of the proceeds in their time at the club, he laughed and said, “We did all right.”

That also buys a lot of sand. When you watch this year’s Masters, and see someone in a bunker, or see a friend with a shirt featuring the most famous logo in golf, think of Bob Kletcke, who came a long way from the golf team at Morgan Park High School.

It happened to me at Wrigley Field as a kid.It happened again as a young teen at

the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.And just a few years ago it returned

again while on assignment at Augusta National.You know that feeling when you walk into a

place and it absolutely overwhelms you and you can’t exactly explain why? All you know is that you’ve entered very, very sacred ground.

For me, Wrigley had it the first time I emerged from the dark and dinge that is the lower concourse and there it was … the green. The field, the ivy, the scoreboard – I was hooked, and it didn’t matter that George Mitterwald and Steve Swisher were our catchers and we had about as good a chance of winning the division as Pat Paulsen did of winning the presidency.

At Indy, my three memories are of walk-ing forever around the perimeter of the track on Race Day, hearing all the hubbub inside and dying to be a part of it. The second memory is ri-diculous but here it is – a young couple holding a leash in front of them as they walked an invisible dog around the infield like it was no big deal. I

don’t know why that sticks out, but it does. And finally, it was getting to our seats way

up in pit row. Music playing, the cars lined up on the track, and across the way, a jam-packed double-decked grandstand that stretched for what seemed like miles down to Turn 4.

Sandi Patty, “Back Home in Indiana,” the invocation, the anthem, the orders to start your engines, the balloons, the fireworks, the pace laps, the checkered flag … spectacle indeed.

Want to guess what my next school project was on? That’s right, A.J. Foyt winning the 1977 Indianapolis 500.

In mid-March of 2006, I remember my edi-tor calling to set up a meeting.

“We’re going to send you to the Masters,” he said.

Thanks to smelling salts, I think I was

only out for a couple of minutes. Kidding, but I remember hearing only every third or fourth word of what he was saying as my mind raced. And honestly, I don’t think my leg ever stopped twitching.

Holy Majoley, I was going to the Masters.I was going to the tournament that had

hooked me on the game. The same place where Jack Nicklaus won at age 46 and moved me to purchase a yellow golf shirt just like his (in a great move considering my age, I opted not to get the checkered pants as well). The same place where a dozen years later he made another run, at age 58, ending up finishing sixth in a remark able performance.

Can you tell I’m a Jack fan? Because of the late notice, there wasn’t a

hotel room to be had anywhere near Augusta. Or anywhere in Georgia, for that matter, so I ended up booking a room in Columbia, S.C.

It was a ridiculous drive, but I didn’t care because it was the Masters for crying out loud.

I arrived in Columbia on Sunday afternoon and by the time 6 a.m. Monday rolled around, I had enough adrenaline flowing in me to clean and jerk a small building.

After about an hour on the highway I exited at Washington Road, lined as far as you can see with cars, Waffle Houses, gas stations and cheap ho-tels, but that all ended with one quick right turn.

And there it was – Augusta National.

Like W.C. Fields, the Western Golf Associa-tion would rather be in Philadelphia.

For a week in 2018, at least. That’s when the WGA will motor into the old comedian’s home town of Philly – the tony suburb of Newtown Square, to be specific – where Aronimink Golf Club will host the BMW Championship.

The WGA’s plan to play out of Chicago in most even-numbered years beginning in 2008 has meant in the Midwest or West to this point, and will again with a return visit to Crooked Stick Golf Club, near Indianapolis, in 2016.

So why Philadelphia? Aside from sponsor BMW’s wish to sell more cars there, the reason speaks to the core of the WGA’s caddies-to-col-lege raison d’etre. The WGA and the Golf Asso-ciation of Philadelphia banded together two years ago to boost caddie scholarships in the area – the GAP created the Platt program in 1958 – and waving the flag in the form of the BMW bash is expected to accelerate the quest to build an Evans Scholar house at Penn State, plus populate it.

“This partnership with the Evans Scholars Foundation is fabulous, and I compliment our trustees for approving the initiative,” said Jona-than P. Warner, chairman of the J. Wood Platt Caddie Scholarship Trust, in a WGA release.

The WGA’s connection with GAP began in 2013 with the first combined award, to Christian Smith, a caddie at Llanerch Country Club. He’s a sophomore at Miami of Ohio. Beginning this fall, three Platt Evans scholars, as the GAP-affiliated recipients are dubbed, will attend Penn State.

The Evans scholarship, which covers tuition and housing, is valued at over $80,000 over four years.

With a goal of 1,000 caddies in college by 2020, and the total hovering around 870 now, the WGA looked to expand, and the east, where pri-vate club caddie programs are active, was the log-ical place to go. With Philadelphia now covered,

other metropolitan areas are being considered.Aronimink is no stranger to tournament golf,

though until recently, it was a long time between the gates opening. Gary Player won the 1962 PGA Championship there, the only national pro tournament there until John Jacobs won the 2003 Senior PGA. The club also hosted a pair of AT&T Nationals, won by Justin Rose and Nick Watney in 2010 and 2011, respectively, and a variety of amateur tournaments, including the 1977 U.S. Amateur, won by John Fought. Aronimink mem-bers were rooting for one of their own, Jay Sigel, who fell to Fought in the semifinals.

The visit will be the farthest east the BMW / Western Open will have been played, breaking a 70-year distance mark. The 1948 Western, won by Ben Hogan in an 18-hole playoff, was played near Buffalo, N.Y. The only previous Western in Pennsylvania was played at the Pittsburgh Field Club in 1959. A hometown fellow named Arnold Palmer finished second to Mike Souchak.

The 16th class for the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame, the highest honor for the sport in the state, will come from among 25 distinguished candi-dates spanning the earliest days of the game in Illinois to the present day.

The nominees include major champions and architects, professionals and amateurs, course owners and writers, and even an influential fan.

Who among this year’s 25 nominees will join the 79 previous inductees will be determined on Selection Night, Wednesday, May 13, when the 19 members of the Hall of Fame’s selection com-mittee will hear presentations from and question presenters for the 10 finalists.

Immediately after the vote, the new members of the Hall will be notified and the results will be announced. Those 10 finalists will be selected from the 25 nominees in first-stage deliberations by the Selection Committee on April 1.

The induction ceremony is slated for October.Among the more recognizable names is Rich

Harvest Farms creator-owner Jerry Rich, whose vision was rewarded by the playing of the Sol-heim Cup on his backyard course. Next year, it hosts the LPGA’s International Crown, an eight team competition, in a format he created.

to Oak Park Country Club. One is Harry Radix, a longtime member there and at Ridgemoor Coun-try Club.

Also deeply connected with figure skating, Radix awarded the original scoring trophy on what is now the PGA Tour, and later was honored by pro pals Errie Ball and Bill Ogden with the creation of the Radix Cup, the annual scrap be-tween the state’s best pros and amateurs.

The other is Horton Smith, the “Joplin Ghost” who won more times more quickly on the Tour at an early age than anyone until Tiger Woods.

Smith’s greatest triumphs, winning the first and third Masters, came while he was head pro and then an honorary member at Oak Park.

Other nominees with outstanding resumes in-clude H. Chandler Egan, who won a pair of U.S. Amateurs and four Western Amateurs playing out of Exmoor, and later became a course designer while living in Oregon; Chicago-based golden age golf architect William B. Langford, whose design of Lawsonia’s original course with Theo-dore Moreau still confounds players; and Gary Hallberg, who captured the 1979 NCAA indi-vidual title and made a Walker Cup team while at Wake Forest, and won three times in his PGA Tour career.

Mistwood clubhouse on wayBetween the surveying, the permitting, the re-

vising, the demolishing and the waiting, it’s been three years since Mistwood owner Jim McWethy showed off the original plan for his Romeoville course’s new clubhouse.

Now, it’s just a matter of months.The photo above showed how construction

had continued through the winter, stopping only on the harshest of days. Progress since includes the building being under roof, but the entire struc-ture isn’t expected to be open until mid-summer,

probably after the July 27-29 Phil Kosin Illinois Women’s Open.

If it’s not clear from the photo, it’s a two-part building, with the main clubhouse on the left and the pro shop on the right. They’ll be connected by an underground tunnel that will include the cart storage area.

The building is styled in the same comfort-able Irish estate look as the Performance Center, which was the only building left standing once the original clubhouse, an architectural curious-ity that placed the pro shop on the second floor

and had no room for a banquet of more than 40 people. McWethy resisted the temptation of driv-ing the demolition equipment himself, but was not sorry to see it go.

Once the full building is operational, Mc-Wethy will have made a massive investment in Mistwood since the course renovation of 2012. That alone cost $6 million. If the clubhouse likely pushed the total tab over $10 million.

Dr. Paul Callaway, Cantigny’s director of golf fitness, thinks you should, and has offered a series of workshops this winter designed to get golfers to shape up. One remains, on Tue., April 7 at 7:15 p.m. at the Canti-gny Golf Academy.

Titled “How to Achieve Proper Spine Angle for Great Accuracy and Consistency,” the fee, payable at the door, is $10 for adults and $15 for couples. Junior golfers (under 18) are $5 when accompanied by an adult. Payment is cash only, at the door.

Workshop fees include a copy of Dr. Callaway’s e-book, “Golf-Fit for Life,” and the opportunity to schedule a complimentary 30-minute consulta-tion and/or injury screening with Cal-laway.

Quickly, courses that thought an April opening was the best they could hope for moved to mow greens and charge carts. Within three days, Whis-per Creek, Orchard Valley, Blackberry Oaks, and a good number of those in the GolfVisions portfolio, all opened their gates – weather permitting, of course – joining the year-rounders such as Cog Hill. The optimism ex-tended north of the border, with The Bull at Pinehurst Farms, in Sheboy-gan Falls, Wis., opening for the year.

Then it snowed again, but the best thing about March snow is the short shelf life.

It’s not called the Challenge on a whim.Back in 1989, when the tournament began,

the name was selected to refer to the challenging host course: Glenwoodie.

It fit. Thus, while the owner of what today is the IllInoIs Golfer Challenge Junior Golf Cham-pionship has changed, and indeed the owner of Glenwoodie has as well, the constant is the course designed by Harry Collis and Jack Daray in 1922, and tweaked by Joe Lee in 1978.

Glenwoodie stands the test of time, and as many as 156 juniors will get to test it on Wed., July 1, when the 27th Challenge takes place.

A handful of entries have already been re-ceived for the big day, which was selected to stay away from as many other tournaments on the ever-burgeoning junior calendar as possible.

In 1989, there were only a handful of junior tournaments. Today, thanks to the great work done by the Illinois Junior Golf Association, a young-ster with the inclination and a big piggy bank can play for a trophy almost every weekday.

The Challenge has four divisions, two for boys and two for girls.

Three of last year’s four champions are eli-gible to play again. Only Rhett Barker, last year’s winner in the Boys 16-to-18 Division, is out, since he’s 19. But Brett Katalnic of Orland Park is eligible, and moving up from the 13-to-18 brack-

et he won in last year, while both girls winners, Nicole Howard of Crown Point, Ind., and Kelly Barker of Palos Heights, can try to win again.

Challenge winners have made it a habit of succeeding in the world of golf. Jim Arvanetes (1991) lettered at Northern Illinois and led the Chicago Open at one stage early in his pro ca-reer. Tony Lane, the Challenge’s first three-time winner (1992-1994), worked as a caddie on the LPGA circuit for a time.

The ladies have made an even bigger im-pact. Mary Beth Skrodski (2002) is the top assis-tant at Missouri Bluffs Golf Club in St. Charles, Mo., while Angela Dehning, who followed her with four straight titles (2003-2006), coaches the

women’s team at Chicago State. And Meg Gilley, who could never get past Dehning in four classic battles, is the assistant coach at Loyola.

From the start, when the Challenge was backed by Pulitzer Publishing, the plan has been to make the tournament affordable.

Thus, the entry fee is lower than most every other junior tournament. This year, it’s $36, which covers the green fee, tee gifts, and lunch after the round. And, of course, a shot at trophies for first, second and third place.

The entry blank with all the details is on the next page. The key dates to remember are June 19 – that’s the deadline – and July 1. That’s when we hope to see you on the first tee!

ELIGIBILITY: Amateur boy and girl golfers ages 13 to 18 (player cannot be 19 or older on July 1). No USGA handicap is necessary. Proof of age must be furnished upon request. The name is funny.The golf is serious.Well, as serious as it can be with the scent

of fertilizer occasionally invading the olfactory ducts.

So don’t make a stink about the name: The Manure Tour.

That’s what participants in the string of ama-teur tournaments around Illinois have named it. And it fits.

The Will County Amateur, the traditional sea-son opener at Balmoral Woods in Crete, is the odd tournament out in that regard. Even a strong west-erly wind – and the wind always blows at least one day in the WCA – won’t bring a whiff over from Balmoral Woods Race Track on the other side of Route 1. That’s good news.

So is this: The field for the tournament is tra-ditionally stout. A list of winners over the years includes seven who have won the Illinois Ama-teur or CDGA Championship, going all the way back to 1991 winner Mark Small, who grabbed the Illinois Amateur title five years later.

Todd Mitchell, the 2014 champion and a four-time winner, wasn’t registered at press time, but the field is pockmarked with threats, includ-ing two-time winners John Ehrgott of downstate Edwards, John Finnin of Mokena and Terry Wer-ner of Dyer, Ind., young guns Mickey Brick of

There’s also the Illinois State Scramble at Vil-lage Greens of Woodridge in late April, as well as the Zigfield Troy Open on the Troy family’s par 3 layout in Woodridge in June.


This may sound like a broken record, but by the time he’s finished at Illinois, junior Thomas Detry may break some records. He was named the Big Ten’s men’s player of the week for the third time in six weeks for his third-place finish at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational on Mar. 22-24. Detry finished at 8-under-par 205 on rounds of 67-69-69, leading top-ranked Illinois to a seventh place finish.

For Detry, it’s the latest in a string of hon-ors. He was also selected player of the week in October, joining fellow Illini Brian Campbell and Charlie Danielson in that category. The native of Brussels, Belgium has been tabbed as player of the week seven times in his college career.

Cats feeling blueAn inability to break 70 in the opening round

put Northwestern back in the pack at Stanford’s Goodwin on Mar. 26-28. Dylan Wu bounced back from an opening 77 with a pair of 69s to finish tied for 33rd at 5-over-par 215, but that could car-ry the Wildcats to only 16th in the 24-team tour-nament. It’s NU’s worst finish of the season, and comes two tournaments after a stylish third in the Jones Sport Intercollegiate in Valencia, Calif.

On CampusGovernor’s State in University Park is adding

golf to its fledgling athletic program. Craig Bow-en is the head coach, with Lincoln Oaks owner Mark Haines the assistant coach of the Jaguars.

Golf equipment has always been a combina-tion of art and science. For a long time, art was the leader in the clubhouse. If Tom Morris wor-ried about launch angles, he took that secret to his grave.

The big state trooper with the mirrored sun-glasses, seeing that my parking pass was legit, surprised me with a friendly Johnny Carson-like golf swing, the follow-through of which directed me to the correct parking lot.

I found my seat in the media center, dropped off my gear, and out I went.

I almost felt guilty for walking on the most manicured grass I had ever seen, but I did anyway. And actually, it wasn’t really walking, more like floating as I visited every corner of the rolling, tree-lined, immaculate course, including Amen.

The highlight of a week that was an absolute blur came on Wednesday, when Jack and his son Jackie stopped by the media center on what was the 20th anniversary of their amazing win.

There I was standing a few feet away listen-ing to the legend talk … it was happening again.
