Among the fund-raisers the group participated in was “We’re Pulling for Ethan,” a pulled pork meal served to raise awareness of 22q, a disorder caused by a small missing piece of the 22nd chromosome. In addition, members: purchased and maintained flowers for the sign welcoming visitors to Milan manned a water and energy bar station for bikers and hikers during the annual GET OUT AND TRAIL participated in an Xstream clean-up prepared food and worked the concession for the weekly Lions Club bingo assisted with a Black Light Bingo event for the Milan Food Pantry prepared and served an evening meal for the homeless Chapter members Barb and Randy Wlaskolich and Dean Mathias also were recognized as 2016 Volunteers of the Year by the Department of Natural Resources. Under the leadership of Kathy McWilliams, president; Jean Chapman, secretary-treasurer; and Barb Wlaskolich, event planner, members have volunteered a total of 332 hours during the second quarter. The Royal Neighbors Foundation AnnouncesNew $10,000 Know Your WorthTM Grant ProgramWith its mission of Building Women’s Futures Through Financial EducationSM, the Royal Neighbors Foundation is pleased to announce an exciting new program designed to empower women whose dreams involve owning their own business. The annual $10,000 grant is awarded to a woman who has an existing small business or has a plan to create a start-up business.

Jennifer Ewert, Davenport, IA, is the inaugural winner of the Know Your Worth grant. With a passion for baking, she recently opened the French Rose Bakery and Café in her hometown and is getting rave reviews. Jennifer will use the Know Your Worth grant to help with additional start-up costs. “The cost was the most difficult part of starting my own business,” she said. “Getting everything you need and want before you run out of money is always a challenge.

2016 Nation of NeighborsSM Program Fulfills Mission to Empower Women Across the Country

Ten women in nine states received $10,000 each from our 2016 Nation of Neighbors Program to empower them to help other women and make their communities better. Congratulations to our 2016 recipients!

• Melissa Pepper, Davenport, IA – mentoring program for young women in business

• Heather Doering, Canton, MI – networking organization which provides inspiration, information, and innovation to women entrepreneurs

• Liz Pitcher, Indianapolis, IN – outreach program for women and girls who have been trafficked

• Margaret Greer-Gogo, Bolingbrook, IL – academy to hold classes that teach women about dressing for success, parenting skills, budgeting, financial planning, etc.

• Lena Council, Elizabeth City, NC – entrepreneurial program that allows girls to establish companies that produce a marketable product

• Arlene Malone, Chesapeake, VA – organization which helps young girls prepare for college• Janita Pavelka, Oxford, NE – entrepreneurship classes empowering women and middle and high school teens• Christina Mastio, Parkville, MO – organization that helps impoverished women meet their basic needs with a

hands-up approach toward self-sufficiency• Desiree Cocroft, Milwaukee, WI – non-profit performance arts organization for girls and women with an

emphasis on dance and mentoring• Amanda Olson, Moline, IL – aquaponics farm to provide healthy, plentiful food

Nation of Neighbors, Royal Neighbors’ signature program to empower women, has provided more than $1.7 million to help individuals reach new goals since the program’s inception in 2007. The program provides financial assistance to individuals who have a plan to start or expand an organization or group that helps women and girls in their community.
