New Program Helps High School StudentsGet Jump Start on College Thanks to a U. S. Dept. of Education pilot program, more students may get an affordablejump start on their college education while they are still in high school. The Department ofEducation recently selected ICC as one of 44 post-secondary institutions around the country to participate in an experimental study that will award the Federal Pell Grant to low-income high school students taking dual enrollment courses. Currently, all Strong Startand Fast Start students, as well as students in Peoria Public Schools, Tremont, Metamoraand East Peoria are eligible to apply, and more schools will continue to be added. Studentsand their parents at the eligible schools who are interested in the program should contactthe ICC Student Services Office at [email protected].

ArtHomage to art NouveauYou are invited to join us in this class as we learnabout the style and history of the Art NouveauMovement. Art Nouveau was an artistic move-ment which peaked in popularity between 1890and 1905 and was practiced in the fields of artand architecture. It is a French term meaning“new art” and is characterized by organic andplant motifs as well as other highly stylizedforms. We will create our own designs based onthe principles of that movement. The main focuswill feature two prominent artists of that period,Alphonse Mucha and Gustav Klimt. History Women in the Civil WarThe Civil War significantly affected the lives ofAmerican women. A handful of women disguisedthemselves as men and joined the fight. Othersserved as spies and nurses. Many more took onnew roles at home after their husbands, brothers,and fathers responded to the call to arms. Thou-sands of enslaved women began the transition tofreedom, beginning new lives amidst the horrorsof war. National Weather Service (NWS) in lincolnThe National Weather Service (NWS) in Lincoln keeps a close eye on theweather, as well as informs and alerts the public for about one-third of Illinois, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. During the tour of the NWS Lincoln facility, you will learn about the tools used by NWS meteorologists to observe the weather and make important forecast and warning decisions.The use of weather balloons, radar, satellite images, other weather measur-ing equipment and the computer system that puts all of the information together will be demonstrated. Chicago Ethnic Grocery Store TourWhat is the next best thing to visiting markets in foreign countries? A tour of Chicago’s ethnic grocery stores. There are grocery stores for African,Caribbean, Vietnamese, Thai, Greek, Mexican, Latin American, Indian, Italian, Middle Eastern, Korean, Russian, European (and more) products.Chicago is a city of ethnic neighborhoods and the people place great emphasis on maintaining the food patterns of their culture of origin. On thistour we will visit four of these neighborhoods and our guide will answer yourquestions about the exotic ingredients. 2016 alumni award Recipients Making a Difference

The 2016 Distinguished alumnus award winner is Sue Yoder Portscheller.

Sue graduated from ICC with an Associate in Applied Science and a Certificate in Banking and Finance. Shecompleted her education with a master’s degree fromBradley University. She began her career at CEFCU as apart-time teller and worked her way up to Vice Presidentof Marketing. Sue has helped shape CEFCU’s role as acorporate citizen.

Sue has served on the ICC Board of Trustees since 1999, and served onthe ICC Educational Foundation Board of Directors for four years.Besides her outstanding service to ICC, Sue has been involved with manyorganizations in the Peoria area. She has served on the Peoria AreaChamber of Commerce Board of Directors, the Easter Seals Board of Directors, the United Way Board of Directors and the Children’s Hospital of Illinois’ Community Advisory Board.

The 2016 alumnus of the last Decade winner is Thomas aguilar.

Thomas graduated from Richwoods High School in 2000and served in the US Marines from 2000 through 2005.He was deployed three times to Afghanistan and Iraq. Thomas graduated from ICC with an associate’s degree in 2010 and went on to graduate from Bradley University.While at ICC, he was initiated into Phi Kappa Theta,served as Student Trustee, and was one of eight students

nationwide invited to attend the White House Summit on Community Colleges. Thomas is now a member of the ICC Educational FoundationBoard of Directors.He has taught adult education to inmates through the Illinois Department of Corrections and has taught Spanish at ICC. Thomas is also a member of the Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors.He is currently employed by Caterpillar as a Facility Planning Engineer.

The Distinguished Alumnus and the Alumnus of the Last Decade Awards recognize and honor outstanding ICC Alumni that have demonstratedachievement within their field of work or expertise, demonstrated commitment to improving education in the ICC district and demonstrated outstanding service to the community.
