Next week we will be proudly hosting 22 students from Japan who are participating in a study tour. A number of the visiting students will be staying with families from our school. The students will be accompanied by their teacher and will participate in many of the class activities alongside our students. This visit will provide a unique experience for our students and the visiting students to develop intercultural understandings and experience new social interactions.

Uniform Shop Grand Opening

Thank you to the many volunteers led by Mel Elkin who helped transform the Uniform Shop from a vision into a reality. We are very grateful for your time and hard work. A special thanks to Brad Elkin for building the shop. Our community enjoyed the grand opening on Friday afternoon which was attended by Eleni Petinos MP.

Please note that access to the Uniform Shop is via the path alongside Mrs Tardent’s room in C Block (see photo) and along the path beside the orchard. No adults or students are allowed to enter the school carpark or walk through it at any time. To help keep students safe, both our staff car parks are strictly out of bounds at all times.

E Block

Work has started on replacing the old railings on the verandas and stair cases. The railings on the back verandahs were replaced this week and work will soon start on the front of the building. I began negotiations on this project during my first week at Illawong Public School, so it is very rewarding to see this work close to completion. The new railings will be higher and without rust, and will lead to improved safety for students.

Illawong Before and After School Care

Work will begin shortly on the pergola at IBASC, providing shelter for parents and students who attend the centre. Thank you to Jen O’Gradey and Francesca for their efforts with this project thus far.

Raising Confident Maths Learners

When a child feels positive about maths, it makes learning much easier. For students to have a healthy attitude towards maths, they need self-belief, confidence and resilience. Children listen when you say things like, "I'm not good at maths," or "I hated maths at school," and it's been shown to have an influence on their attitude towards learning maths. So show enthusiasm for maths - even if you need to fake it !

Uniform Shop GRAND OPENING

Our official Uniform Shop opening took place on Friday 27 July 2018. Thank you to all our wonderful parents and grandparents who supported our school by attended the event. Illawong Public School Uniform Shop is run by volunteers on behalf of the P&C. We do this to maintain low operating costs and return profits back into our school. Working out of ‘the cupboard’ for so many years has been challenging, both for our volunteers as well as our customers. It has been a vision for many years to move location of the shop. Every option was explored, however, nothing suitable within school grounds was available. In 2016 we applied for a Community Building Partnership, a grant funded through the state government. Our application was successful and as they say, the rest is history. Ms Eleni Petinos, our local MP, attended our official opening and we thank her for her support with our 2016 grant application. P&C would also like to thank Ms Birch for her support with this project. Ms Birch, you helped us gain the momentum we needed to get the project started and completed! Of course a project like this does not build itself and we have had so many talented helpers make this possible. Thank you to Darren Ferguson; Philip Sprod; Mr Wilkinson; Mrs Archer and Joan Thomas for your contributions. Thank you also to Lisa and Ash Arnold, Julie Svensson, James Butler, Nancy Feltaous, Anderson Borges , Sarah Collins, Allison and Michael McInerney and Brad Elkin, Janelle Butler, and Steve and Shondha Moore. Also to our student helpers Ian B, Flynn, Chloe and Charlie M, Jack, Heidi and Indigo C and Josh, Mitch and Xavier E.

Two special people I would like to especially acknowledge for all their additional support and help to the project; Nancy Feltaous – We appreciate your reliability and selflessness in your contribution to this project, to the uniform shop and to general P & C activities. Allison McInerney – the sounding board for ideas and designs, and generally helping to get this project completed.

Now of course a shop cannot be a shop without volunteers to serve our customers and support our school. We have a great group of parents and grandparents who donate their time to ensure our shop is successfully operating each Friday. We appreciate all your support and could not do it without you. Thank you Nancy, Allison, Janelle Butler, Mel Pronti, Filippa Allam, Liz D’Alfonso, Gillian Cross, Caroline Sprod, Melanie Ferguson, Julie Patterson, Joan Thomas.

If you are interested in volunteering in our new shop please contact [email protected] . If you cannot assist on a Friday however can assist on a different day of the week, we are also keen in hearing from you. We would love to extend our operating days but to achieve this we need more volunteers to be available.
