Outdoor Learning at Westerfolds Park

A day of fun, yet practical lessons in map reading and geospatial skills

On Tuesday 5th April this year, the Year-7 boys and girls, were taken to an excursion to Westerfolds Park, Templestowe, for an orienteering activity.

Organised by the Humanities Department, the excursion was aimed at imparting to the students, essential skills in map reading and geospatial navigation.

Also, through this orienteering exercise, it gave our students the opportunity to apply what they had learnt in their Humanities class.

Under the guidance of facilitators from Orienteering Victoria, a non-profit organisation that actively promotes orienteering in Victoria, our students had to put to practice the knowledge and skills that their Humanities teachers had taught them in class.

Divided into multiple groups and equipped with a topographic map, each group of students had to walk around Westerfolds Park in search of various checkpoints before being allowed to return to their base camp.

Several groups of students had even got lost in the park, while trying to locate a particular checkpoint on their topographic map.

Although it was a physically tiring exercise for many students, it was nonetheless, a fun and memorable experience for everyone, who had participated.

Report prepared by Mr Sophiandy, on behalf of the Humanities Department.

Character Parade

What a fantastic sight it was today to see all the students of Ilim College dressed up in their favourite characters. It was even more exhilarating to see the teachers pa-rading around in their elaborate costumes. As I entered the school gym, I felt like I was thrust into the pages of a picture story book or a modern day fairytale. There were Red Riding Hood’s, Batman’s, Where’s Wal-ly’s, Cleopatra’s, Pirates and many more. This event was organised to promote the premiers reading challenge in the hope of encouraging students into the library and increase borrowing. Judging by the smiles on everyone’s faces today I think it has re-ally recharged everyone’s love for reading. This event required such an overwhelm-ing response from the students that I would like to say a huge thank you to all the parents who went out of their way to outfit their children, and to the teach-ers who not only went above and beyond with their costumes, but also made the day a huge success with their enthusiasm. Finally, a big thank you to everyone else who participated and helped make it such a joyous and wonderful event.

ThankyouMs. Seyma Yagci Teacher-Librarian

Ilim College Raises $5000 for the

Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal

Once again, Ilim College participated in the Royal Chil-dren’s Hospital appeal, that happens every year in Victo-ria. These extracurricular activities were originally initi-ated; by our devoted Murvet Altikulac (SRC Coordinator for primary) a couple of years back and once again she has ignited the opportunity to organise fundraising events to take place, for such a wonderful cause. Some of the events that took place in primary were, selling of pop-corn, fairy floss and ‘students out of uniform’ on Har-mony day. Some other event that took place during sec-ondary was a movie day, selling of popcorn, drinks, out of uniform day, and the outer community contributions. Through collaboration of primary and second-ary fundraising events, Ilim College managed to raise $5000 for the Royal Children’s Hospital!

The hightlight for the students was going down to the Etihad Stadium presenting the cheque on live broadcast television. Thank you to all families, friends, staff mem-bers and students for your contributions and support. A special thank you to Mr Kirca (Principal), Mr Selim Kayik-ci (Secondary Vice Principal), Mrs Aynur Simsirel (Primary Vice Principal) Ms Murvet Altikulac (SRC Coordinator Pri-mary), Ms. Asmah Abou-Eid (SRC Coordinator Second-ary) for their overwhelming dedication and support. The events would not have been a success without your help may you all be rewarded for your efforts.

With the winter months approaching, it is important to be aware of the triggers that can affect your asthma at this time of year. SUDDEN CHANGES IN TEMPERATURE

Certain weather situations like very cold temperatures, humidity and dry air can trigger asthma symptoms.

In a school environment, students are exposed to sudden temperature changes many times during the day as they go between heated classroom environments to outdoor activities and lunch breaks.

Wearing a scarf over the mouth and nose is recommended, as it can help to warm the air as you breathe in.

Exercise-induced asthma may be exacerbated by breathing in colder air than usual, so ensure that you take your reliever puffer 5-20 minutes prior to exercise, warm up adequately, monitor your symptoms during exercise, and have a blue reliever puffer handy in case of an asthma attack.

THUNDERSTORMS

Thunderstorms can be an asthma trigger for some people, as raindrops can cause grains to be broken down into hundreds of tiny allergen-containing particles – allowing them to penetrate the lungs.

If you experience asthma symptoms during thunderstorms, it is best to stay inside with windows closed, and ensure that you update your asthma action plan with your doctor outlining the management of your day to day asthma, what to do if your symptoms worsen, and the first aid procedure in the event of an asthma attack.

Asthma and Influenza

THE FACTS Approximately 2,800 Australians die every year

either directly from the seasonal flu, complications due to the flu, or pneumonia.

Adults and children with chronic illnesses (such as asthma) are at a higher risk of complications from the virus.

Colds and flu can be a trigger for some people with asthma, and can make your symptoms worse.

Flu vaccinations are the single most effective action in helping fight the spread of flu in the community.

The vaccine provides protection from about two weeks after the injection, and lasts for about one year (so even if you were immunised last year, you need to have the vaccine again this year).

The flu shot cannot give you the flu – as the vaccine does not contain any active virus.

In Victoria, under the National Immunisation Program, the criteria state that an annual free influenza immunisation is available to children or adults with severe asthma. The vaccination is available now, so contact your doctor or immunisation provider to make an appointment. Many workplaces provide free vaccinations for staff to help prevent absenteeism during the winter months, so it is a good idea to ask your employer if this is available to you.

Message from Secondary NAPLAN Coordinator

Courtesy Reminder:

Year 7 and Year 9 students will take part in the National Assess-ment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN Tests) from the 10th - 12th of May 2011 (Week 3 – Term 2).

All students are strongly encouraged to develop their existing literary and numeracy skills, as well as further enhance their un-derstanding and knowledge in both domains.

The NAPLAN test has been modified slightly this year. All stu-dents must complete a persuasive essay, as a replacement for the short narrative.

Parents with further enquiries on how to further develop their students understanding and knowledge in literacy or numeracy are to contact their child’s respecting English and/or Math teach-er.

For any questions regarding the NAPLAN tests, please contact Mr. Hassan Mansour.

Secondary NAPLAN Department

Message from Primary NAPLAN CoordinatorThe National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NA-PLAN) is an annual national assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. All students in these year levels are expected to partici-pate in tests in Reading, Writing, (Persuasive Writing) Language Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation) and Numeracy which will be held from the 10th – 12th of May.

The NAPLAN Writing test has been modified this year. All stu-dents must complete a ‘persuasive’ writing piece as a replace-ment for the short narrative.

The NAPLAN tests will provide parents and teachers with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. The tests also provide schools and states/terri-tories with information about how education programs are work-ing and which areas need to be prioritised for improvement.

NAPLAN tests are one aspect of the school’s assessment and reporting process and do not replace the extensive ongoing as-sessments made by teachers about each student’s progress and performance.

On Thursday the 28th of April 8A went on an excursion to the Shrine of Remembrance to commemorate ANZAC Day. Once there, they watched and listened as a ceremony was presented before them. The governor general greeted Ilim College students and welcomed all to the commemorative service. An army of soldiers and officers performed an interesting re-enactment and students were asked to stand for one minute in silence in honour of our fallen heroes. Ilim College students were presented with a sprig of rosemary, as a symbol of remembrance.
