SOLIHULL COMPETITIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL 2012
The Syllabus this year is similar to last year, but a few classes have beendeleted and two have been added. 130 Young Instrumentalist andV30 Young Singer. These are Solo classes for ages 11 to 17 years.A minimum of two pieces of contrasting styles are required within a totalperformance time of 8 minutes. Full time students of music above A level, orwho are at vocational music establishments, are not eligible for these twoclasses ..Competitors for Graded Classes should enter the Class appropriate to theirability and grade obtained, i.e., they should be able to play to that standardbut not yet have passed a grade higher than the Class entered. Pleasecheck with a Music Teacher that the class you are entering and the pieceyou wish to play are appropriate before entering them on your Entry Form.
All music to be played in the competition is Own Choice.Examination pieces are not required, but may be chosen if you so wish.
Some Classes will be held on the evening of Friday 21si September. TheseClasses are expected to be for the higher grades or age groups and fulldetails will be given in the Programme to be issued to you in August.
The Rules of the Festival are shown on pages 13 to 15 are unchanged,except Rule 3, which now states that ages are to be reckonedas at 31st August in the year of the Festival. In Age Classes, performersmay only enter within the age range stated for the class.This year, to help defray costs, we have instituted a charge of £3 per Class,when the performer wishes to use our own accompanist. Please take noteof this when completing the Entry Form.

CHILD PROTECTION POLICY
1. OUR POLICY
It is our policy to enlist the help of parents, guardians, carers and teachers who attend
the Festival, by creating a partnership which ensures the highest standard of care on
the day of the Festival. Parents or designated adults are expected to take full
responsibility for their children's safety at all times.
2. TO WHOM DOES THIS POLICY APPLY?
This applies to all children under the age of 18 and those vulnerable adults of any age
previously identified to the organisers.
3. FESTIVAL PERSONNEL
All committee members and volunteer helpers are recruited by invitation through
recommendations. On the day of the Festival, they can be identified by the wearing of
official badges. A clearly marked office is open throughout the day, where Festival
Personnel will provide any help required. Any problems will be dealt with sympathetically
and documented. Prior to the day of the Festival, a meeting is held for all involved
personnel during which the policy will be explained.
4. PREPARATION FOR ATTENDANCE AT THE FESTIVAL
Our policy is published in the Syllabus and the Programme. Where parents, guardians,
carers and teachers are not personally attending with their children, this policy requires
them to be satisfied that their children will be accompanied to the Festival and adequately
supervised by responsible adults acting on their behalf.
5. PERFORMANCE AREAS AND CHANGING AREAS
All performances are in public. Any practice rooms or changing rooms, if available,
are unsupervised. The toilet areas are not supervised.
6. PHOTOGRAPHS, VIDEOT APES AND PRESS PHOTOGRAPHY
The use of cameras, video or tape recorders is prohibited. A press photographer may
attend the Festival or Concert by invitation of the organizers, and any parent, guardian,
carer or teacher who does not wish the child in his/her care to be photographed should
ensure that he/she is not photographed individually or as part of a group.

RULES OF THE COMPETITIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL
1. ENTRY FORMSClosing date for entries is MONDAY 16th JULY 2012
All pieces of music selected to be played are to be Own Choice. Details of the music selected(which may include Jazz items), including both the title and the composer, must be shown onthe entry form and may not be changed after the closing date.No entry will be accepted unless the correct fee in enclosed with the completed Entry Form.
Fees paid are not refundable.

4. CODE OF FAIR PRACTICEThe Festival is open to Amateurs only. For this purpose, Amateur is defined as follows:
An Amateur is someone who does not derive his/her livelihoodfrom the branch of performance, defined by the Class title,in which he/she seeks to enter the Festival.In any Ensemble, all players must adhere to that principle.

5. COPYRIGHT - SHEET MUSICUnauthorised copying of music is an infringement of copyright.
If the music is out of print, permission to copy MUST be obtained in writingfrom the publishers and a copy of the letter forwarded with the music.
The Music Publishers Association has issued a Code of Practice making theconcession that "Own Choice" pieces may be copied from volumes only andfor the use of the adjudicator only. It is forbidden to copy music for theaccompanist.
With the exception of this concession, no other photocopying of music ispermitted. Photocopies for the use of the Adjudicator must be totally legible.Single sheet music must not be photocopied. Originals only should beprovided for the accompanist and adjudicator.
All photocopies of music must legally be destroyed after use.
6. OWN CHOICE CLASSESA copy of the music chosen must be handed to the Adjudicator's Steward justbefore performing. The performer's name and class number must be shownon the copy.
FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THIS RULE WILL MEAN THAT THEPERFORMER WILL BE ADJUDICATED BUT WILL NOT RECEIVE A MARK.
Note: please make sure that all music is collected at the end of the class.Any unclaimed copies will be disposed of.
7. ACCOMPANISTThe accompanist is available to any performer who is not able to provide theirown.
8. MARKING SYSTEMThe Festival marking system is clearly shown on page 4 under SPECIALNOTICES.
9. CERTIFICATESCertificates will be awarded at the end of each class to all performers toconfirm that they have taken part, and to Class Winners
It is expected that Class Winners who attain an Outstanding orDistinction grade will be prepared to perform in the Concert on Saturdayevening, and other Class Winners if requested.

10. TROPHIES
A small trophy will be awarded and retained by the overall winner in each class,(provided the performer has met the standard required to be awarded a certificate), atthe Concert of Winners in the evening.
The SHEILA GASKELL TROPHY for piano and the HELEN WILLIES TROPHY forthe Solihull Musician of the Year will be presented at the Concert together with theKEITH WILLIES BURSARY of £250.
11. ADJUDICATION
