A.1) THEINSTITUTE
The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) is one of the higher Institutes of Technology inthecountrysetupwiththeobjectives ofmakingavailable facilitiesforhighereducation,researchandtraininginvariousfieldsofScienceandTechnology.Itwasestablishedin1958.
TheInstituteislocatedatPowaiinacampusextendingover220hectaresamidstpicturesquesurroundingswithViharandPowailakesoneitherside.
At present, Undergraduate, PostgraduateandDoctoral programmesareoffered byAerospaceEngineering,ChemicalEngineering,CivilEngineering,ComputerScienceandEngineering,EarthSciences, Energy Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering andMetallurgicalEngineeringandMaterialsScienceDepartmentsandbyInterdisciplinarygroupsinIndustrialEngineeringandOperationsResearchandSystemsandControlEngineering.
The Industrial DesignCentreof the Instituteoffers a2year M.Des. Programmein IndustrialDesign,VisualCommunication,Animation,InteractionDesign,MobilityandVehicleDesignandaPh.D. Programme in Design. M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes in Applied Geology and AppliedGeophysics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, M.Sc. Programme in Applied Statistics andInformaticsareofferedbytherespectiveDepartments.TheDepartmentofPhysicsalsooffersa4yearB.Tech.ProgrammeinEngineeringPhysics.TheHumanitiesandSocialSciencesDepartmentoffersdoctoralprogrammesanda2yearM.Philprogramme.TheCentreofStudiesinResourcesEngineering(CSRE)offersa2yearM.Tech.ProgrammeinGeoinformatics&NaturalResourcesEngineering and doctoral programmes. The Departments of Physics, Energy Science andEngineering,CentreforEnvironmentalScienceandEngineering arealsoofferingM.Sc.Ph.DDualdegreeprogrammesandtheiradmissionsarethroughJAM.TheInstituteoffersM.Tech.inTechnologyandDevelopmentofferedbyCTARAandalsooffersadoctoralprogramme,Ph.DinNano Technology offered by CRNTS. The Institute offers Cross Departmental M.TechprogrammeinMaterials,Manufacturing&Modelling(MMM)offeredbyMechanicalEngineering,Met. Engineering&Mat. Sci. &Mathematics. TheShaileshJ. Mehta, School of Managementoffers a 2year Master of Management programme and also a doctoral programme. TheDepartment of Biosciences and Bioengineering offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. programmes inBiotechnology,M.Tech.andPh.D.programmesinBiomedicalEngineeringandM.Sc.Ph.D.DualDegreeProgramme inBiotechnology. TheCentre for UrbanScience&Engineering(CUSE)offersPh.D.ProgrammeinUrbanScience&Engineering.TheInstitutealsohasPGDualDegreeProgrammes(M.Tech.+Ph.D.)inseveraldisciplines.
TheInstituteonanaverageadmits1050candidatesfortheUndergraduateprogrammesand1398candidates for different Postgraduate and Doctoral programmes every year. Students fromBangladesh, Egypt, Ethiopia, Fiji, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Jordan, Mauritius, Malaysia, Nepal,Palestine,SriLanka,VietnamandYemenarealsoundergoingtraininginvariousprogrammes.Inadditiontotheseacademicprogrammes,theContinuingEducationProgramme(CEP)organizesshort,intensivecoursesinspecializedtopicsbothforpracticingengineersaswellasforteachersfromengineeringcolleges;andalsoconductsseminarandconferencesoncurrentscientificandtechnological developments. Further, teachers from various engineering colleges also joinInstituteforthepostgraduateanddoctoralprogrammes.underQualityImprovementProgramme(QIP).
A.2) RESEARCHFACILITIES
All the departments, centres, schools and interdisciplinary groups of the Institute have wellequippedresearchlaboratoriesandworkshopfacilities.Inaddition,thereareanumberofcentral

facilities, whichincludeComputerCentre,CentralLibraryandCentralWorkshop.TheCentralLibraryhasaverylargecollectionofbooks,backvolumesofperiodicals,standardspecificationsandotherliterature.TheLibrarynowhasmorethan3lakhsbooksandvolumesandsubscribestoover 1500 current journals in Science, Engineering, Humanities and Social Sciences. TheComputerCentreofIITBombayprovideshighendnetworkedcomputingfacilities.
TheInstitutehasmanyresearchcollaborationswithleadinguniversitiesinUSA,Europe,Japan,andotherEastAsiancountries.Aspartofthesecollaborations,thepostgraduatestudentsgetopportunitiestocarryoutjointresearchprojectswithfacultyandstudentsfromtheseuniversities.
The location of IIT Bombay, in close proximity to several leading R&D Centers and majorindustrial establishments, offers excellent opportunities to interact with themandplansomeresearch programmes in collaboration with them. The Industrial Research and ConsultancyCentre(IRCC)coordinatescollaborativeprojectswithindustryandotherresearchorganizationssuchasBARC,TIFRandCSIR.TheInstituteisactivelycollaboratingwithseveralorganizationsof othercountriesonabilateralbasis.
A.3) STUDENTSAMENITIES
TheInstituteisfullyresidentialandhas16hostelsforstudents.Eachhostelisanindependententitywithitsownmessfacilities,recreationareas,etc.Howeverstudentsmaybepermittedtohavetheirownarrangementsforaccommodationoutsidecampus.Someflatletsareavailableformarriedresearchscholars.
Extracurricular activities are provided by the Students Gymkhana. These activities includeSports, Cultural programmes and Social Service. Various clubs of the Gymkhana encourageindividual talents of students in hobbies such as painting, modeling, music, photography,aeromodellingandfabricationofelectronicdevices.Aswimmingpoolisanadditionalfacility.AwellplannedStudentActivitiesCentre(SAC)routinelyorganizesseveralvibrantextracurricularevents.
A.4)Ph.D.PROGRAMME
Witha sound research base and extensive infrastructural facilities, the Institute offers Ph.D.programmeinawiderangeofareasinEngineering,Science&HumanitiesandSocialSciences. ThebroadobjectivesofthePh.D.programmearetocontributetoexpandingthe frontiersof knowledgeandtoprovideresearchtrainingrelevanttothesocialandeconomicneedsofthecountry.
TheacademicprogrammeleadingtothePh.D.degreeisbroadbasedandinvolvesacoursecreditrequirementandaresearchprojectleadingtothesissubmission.TheInstitutealsoencouragesresearchininterdisciplinaryareasthroughasystemofjointsupervisionandinterdepartmentalgroup activities. The presence of a strong research oriented faculty provides excellentopportunitiesforsuchprogramme.TheInstituteundertakessponsoredresearchanddevelopmentprojectsfromindustrialandotherorganizationsinpublicaswellasprivatesector.

Inadditiontothegeneraleligibilitycriterion,theapplicantmustsatisfytheeligibilitycriteriaspecifiedfortherespectiveDepartments/Centres/Schools/InterdisciplinaryGroups.
